croran_44[m]any major issues or must-have features?03:15
arraybolt3[m]croran_44: So far it's been perfect for me.03:15
arraybolt3[m]The one real problem I've seen is the Snap version of Firefox, which occasionally interferes with things like smart cards and the like. For that, you just uninstall the Snap firefox and install it from a PPA or from the tarball.03:15
arraybolt3[m](Or you install Chrome like I did.)03:15
Unit193I'd say it depends on if you run a server, and if that server requires php 7.x.03:16
croran_44[m]ah interesting03:17
croran_44[m]Unit193: why's that? 7.x no longer available?03:17
Unit193php 8.x is what's in Jammy, yes.  This specifically hits dokuwiki.03:17
croran_44[m]ah. well the sooner php goes away the better, as far as I'm concerned.03:31

dane9Hi11:03
EriC^^hello11:03
dane9I need help making Ubuntu dual boot with windows 10 on my Dell Laptop11:04
EriC^^what exactly is the problem/question?11:04
dane9when I choose ubuntu on bootup it just lands back on Windows 10 everytime11:04
propusdane9: install windows first then install ubuntu.11:04
EriC^^dane9: can you boot a live usb to troubleshoot?11:05
dane9I used this guide:11:05
dane9https://itsfoss.com/dual-boot-hdd-ssd/11:05
EriC^^dane9: just to be clear, it never boots ubuntu right?11:05
dane9The Laptop came with Windows (10 I think) Home11:05
dane9Yes it doesn't boot into Ubuntu11:05
dane9even after selecting the option on bootup11:06
dane9I have 2 harddisks, a 256 GB SSD & a 1 TB HDD11:06
EriC^^ok, try first to disable secureboot in the bios, if it still doesnt work boot a live usb to troubleshoot11:06
EriC^^dane9: do you get the grub menu at all?11:07
dane9that's why I tried to follow that guide that suggested putting a 30 GB '/' root partition on the SSD & '/home' on the HDD (300 GB)11:07
dane9I disabled Secure Boot11:07
EriC^^ok, any grub menu?11:08
dane9When I hit F12... it gives me the option to choose Ubuntu, so I think that is the GRUB?11:08
EriC^^no, i think that's the bios boot menu11:08
dane9I'm not sure what the GRUB is11:08
dane9ok11:08
dane9If I boot with USB it might be easier to troubleshoot?11:09
EriC^^this is grub https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/sshot428.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,111:09
EriC^^yeah da11:09
EriC^^dane911:09
dane9Also I think I didn't create a '/swap' partition, could that be a possible problem? I think that guide I read missed mentioning '/swap' though I've seen '/swap' mentioned in almost every other guide11:10
dane9Oh the GRUB I get only when the USB with Ubuntu on it is plugged in11:11
EriC^sorry i got d/c dane911:12
dane9No Problem11:12
=== EriC^ is now known as EriC^^
EriC^^anyways let me know when the live usb is up and running11:12
dane9"Oh the GRUB I get only when the USB with Ubuntu on it is plugged in" in case the message was when you got disconnected11:12
EriC^^ah i see11:12
EriC^^what dell model is it?11:13
dane9And do you think not creating a '/swap' partition could be a problem?11:13
EriC^^no, ubuntu these days uses a swapfile, same thing11:13
dane9It's a dell inspiron 3583 (couple of years old)11:14
dane9I'll try to get back after trying to boot from the USB11:15
EriC^^dane9: did you try it at all with secureboot on by any chance? it might be that dell needs secureboot enabled to boot ubuntu11:16
dane9Hmmm I could try turning secure boot on11:17
EriC^^try that, it will ask for a password i think, and that's normal for dell11:17
dane9I'll give that a shot and be back11:17
EriC^^ok11:17
dane9Yes I remember it asked me for some password when I switched secure boot off11:17
EriC^^aha11:17
dane9That password is in my hotmail ID .. I can get it again11:18
dane9I guess I'll give this a shot and be back later11:18

dane9Ok, I have a Dell Inspiron 3583 which can with Windows 10 Home. I have 2 hardisks and have tried to setup Ubuntu as dual boot. But when I choose ubuntu from the boot menu, it goes into Dell Support Assist (Performance check or something) and then lands back at Windows 10 everytime13:00

bougymanOI, I can't get around this... https://gist.github.com/bougyman/abb38bf4bf248a9b878e4c384e4bfecd19:26
bougymanYes, it's PopOS, I know it's off-topic-ish. But strictly dpkg-related, I've never seen this.19:26
bougymanAlready done dpkg-reconfigure --force libc6:i386 (no errors) and can't get around it.19:26
bougymanCan't uninstall any of the packages that are having problems, it keeps looping on dependencies.19:27
jhutchinsbougyman: Try installing Ubuntu, see if it has the same problem.  If so, we might be able to help you.19:32
jhutchinsbougyman: Just because it's dpkg doesn't mean it's like Ubuntu.19:32
bougymanjhutchins: Yeah, I get that.19:33
bougymanThought there might be some magic --force that I didn't know about.19:33
bougymanI've tried every trick I know.19:33
Chunkyzbougyman: try popos support, also read /channel19:33
bougymanThis is a frame.work, so I generally stick with Pop.19:33
jhutchinsSticking with Pop is fine, just not supported here.19:34
ChunkyzExactly đŸ˜‚19:34
jhutchinsbougyman: No judgement, not being mean, it's just not the same thing.19:34
bougymanAck. Only thought someone might know a magic dpkg incantation.19:34
bougymanI've already reached out to pop support.19:34
ChunkyzThen wait.19:34
bougymanI'm not good at waiting.19:34
bougymanBut I'm waiting.19:34
ChunkyzTough.19:34
jhutchinsbougyman: Do a parallel install of Ubuntu, see if it happens there.19:35
jhutchinsbougyman: Something to do while you wait.19:35
bougymanjhutchins: that's not really apples to apples. I'm sure if I did a fresh install of Ubuntu _or_ Pop it wouldn't happen. This is related to upgrade path action.19:36
bougymanAnd it's 99% a fault in the Pop side. I was just trying to circumvent it.19:36
bougymanUsually I can uninstall the offending stuff then reinstall it and all is well.19:37
bougymanIn this case, I can't get anything to uninstall.19:37
bougymanToo many layers of the onion deep, on the revdeps.19:37
ChunkyzNot #ubuntu, use your distros channel.19:38
=== xenial is now known as Guest4311
bougymanChunkyz: I get it. And if I don't get something satisfactory from support on this one I'll throwing official Ubuntu on this thing. I dealt with a few pop quirks already, this would be the last straw.19:39

morganuDell Optiplex 9020, 20.04: Memtest86+ locks in first cycle aka immediatly. What do I do to trace down this problem? ( I have checked temp, nope. I have switched the SIMM cards too.)23:37
tomreynmorganu: i'm not sure what you mean by "I have switched the SIMM cards too", do you mean you swapped DIMMs across available memory banks?23:43
oerheksseems like a uefi machine, maybe you need the iso from memtest itself that is compatible23:48
tomreynmorganu: with the computer locking up, you should undo any overclocking / non default optimizations and retry. if it still locks up, remove all but one DIMM, and test just that. repeat until you identify the one which causes it to freeze. if it freezes with multiple, make sure your power supply is sufficient and, if any, the extra power cable for the cpu (4 or 8 pins, or a combination of those) is connected.23:52
