slingamn`apt-get dist-upgrade` on my 22.04.1 server is reporting:05:03
slingamnThe following packages have been kept back:05:03
slingamn  libnftables1 nftables05:03

murmelI would fav that site, as you can't see otherwise which updates are phased (except you apt policy every package)05:27
slingamnbookmarked :-)05:27
murmelI really wonder why canonical doesn't have a more "official" site which tells you which are phased. as a "random" people website :/05:28
slingamnhmm if the policy information is available in-band, i would prefer if apt-get would just display it05:29
slingamneven if the website were more prominent, people (like me) might not know about it, at least until the first time they encounter this05:30
murmelslingamn, if you don't use 3rd party repos, it's like 99.9% a phased update when it gets held back05:31
slingamnah05:31
slingamni usually have one or more third party repos on my desktop systems05:31
slingamnbut this is a server so it's pure05:32
murmelmakes sense. not everybody is happy what's inside the ubuntu repos ;)05:32
murmelslingamn, on a server, I would definitely look into configuring phased updates to be always installed or not05:33
murmelif you didn't do that already05:33
slingamni'll think about it05:33
slingamnbut, they wouldn't do this for a security update or anything else eligible for unattended-upgrades, right?05:34
slingamnso this really only affects manual upgrades05:34
murmelslingamn, if you have more than 1, you want to always be on the same status05:34
slingamni have a bunch of these but not in the same role05:34
murmelI never saw a security update for now (afair)05:34
murmelslingamn, I would definitely make them one or the other, so you know that they all share the same base ubuntu package versions05:35

Cursarionso I should just purge GNOME?11:09
lotuspsychjeCursarion: what we usualy advice to users, when they tested/liked an ubuntu flavour, is just clean install that flavour instead of mixing up11:09
lotuspsychjeCursarion: unless you want a combine of different flavours for daily use?11:10

NeverNickHey guys, I want to add a route to my face via nmcli. However when i do so, and check with "ip r" its  not there and doesn't work nmcli con show, lists ipv4.routes  and IP4.ROUTE[i] the latter do work but I can't seem to address it via nmcli.13:19
jbwncsterLike all macs13:19
pikapikajbwncster, oh i see13:19
pikapikayeah13:19
tomreynpycurious: if your goal is to change the sudo configuration in an automated way, i'd suggest using some of the common software deployment tools, such as ansible, puppet, salt stack etc.13:19
pikapikaI find that scary13:20
jbwncsterI’m just waiting on the upgrade from focal whatever to jelly whatever13:20
pikapikajbwncster, are the vents at the back or in front (blowing air right up the screen)13:20
pikapikathe latter is nasty13:20
jbwncsterBack13:20
pikapikathank god13:21
pikapikaon some models vents are in front13:21
jbwncsterI try to use a laptop riser anyhow13:21
jbwncsterBecause it puts out a lot of heat13:21
jbwncsterBut at least there’s no heat issues with Linux so far13:21
pikapikaI don't have a mac but I kinda fucked out on my new laptop purchase13:21
pikapikaIt has that stupid vent design thing13:22
pikapikano doubt copied from apple, lots of companies just blindly copy apple trends without looking at context or whether the decisions were right in the first place or not13:22
tomreynJornS: yes, this sounds like you want to add a static route. i suggest asking in #netplan or #ubuntu-server13:23
jbwncsterI think more laptops need more vents13:23
JornSthanks, I'll try #netplan :)13:23
jbwncsterNot enough in any laptop13:23
pikapikajbwncster, yes13:23
pikapikaNobody fucking asked for "thin" laptops packed tighter than sardines13:23
jbwncsterAlso they probably put in the cheapest fans ever13:23

jbwncsterI do not want a 17 inch laptop though13:24

francescohi14:39
MdI have in user-data autoinstall: // kernel: // package: linux-image-virtual, but linux-generic is still being installed. why?14:39
tomreynWOWElectronics: ubuntu provides fixed versions of packages per ubuntu release. newer ubuntu releases often provide newer software versions.14:40
tomreynWOWElectronics: you can manually build software, of course. software usually comes with build instructions.14:41
WOWElectronicsI need >4.? for pronterface14:41
arraybolt3[m]WOWElectronics: Unless you for sure need newer software, stick to the software provided in Ubuntu. If you must have newer software, do NOT use "make install" to install it, this will break your system. Build it, then run the resulting binaries from right where they're at. And also, Python is playing with fire - if you somehow accidentally install it into the core of your system, your whole system may blow up.14:42
arraybolt3[m]I'd highly recommend doing anything with newer versions of Python inside a virtual machine so that if it goes wrong you have a way to recover.14:42

Guest95I just dual booted Linux Mint with a bad experience, IE Simple things like I could only choose 100 or 200% scale for my X360 Envy with 4500U. Do you think my experience would be any better with Ubuntu ? Model 2S897EA#ABU15:21
enigma9o7[m]You want "franctional scaling"15:21
enigma9o7[m]hmmm no actually fractional15:22

Guest95Even better idea15:29
OpenSourceSo clearly, you didn't read it the first time around, and just did a factoid.15:29
Guest95Cheers enigma9o7[m]15:29
OpenSourceAs the only logical answer to it is, we don't know, try it. Or maybe someoen does have the hardware with Ubuntu and it works.15:29
Guest95OpenSource what is your deal dude15:29
OpenSourceIt was never a question of whether X is better than Y. You're just covering for the fact that you didn't read, mistakenly did a bot factoid, got called out, and now instead of saying, yeah, you're right, you're doubling down and arguing more.15:31

dudelstomreyn: "sudo apt purge amdgpu-install" successfully removed18:09
tomreyndudels: https://termbin.com/qrch     was the output of command    apt list --installed | grep ',local\]$'     - this command tells you which packages you have installed which are not available from any of the configured apt repositories. so these are usually old packages from before the upgrade, or packages installed from third party software sources - software sources which are no longer configured and may not be comptaible to this ubuntu18:11
tomreynrelease.18:11
tomreyndudels: it's usually a good idea to 'apt purge <package> <otherpackage ...>' these unless you know you need to keep them, in this very version, and without a chance to get updates.18:12

DianaI have a problem with this UBUNTU operating mode, where can I get help?18:17
PraxisI appear to be having some massive network issue, and I have no idea where it came from. None of my web interfaces like cockpit will respond, and I don't seem to be able to ssh in, unless I use the ip adrress, restarting avahi did let me use the hostname, but I'm not even sure what logs to look at to trace this issue18:18
Minverahave you cheecked journalctl?18:19
tomreyndudels: from the latest termbin: "Is amdgpu pro stack? no"18:19
Dianacan someone help me too18:20
PraxisMinvera don't I need some arg to show me the relevant info?18:20
tomreyndudels: in combination with "Is amdgpu loaded? yes"18:20
tomreynDiana: hi, this is the right place to get help with the Ubuntu operating system. what's your question?18:21
dudelstomreyn:  Many thanks!  Unless you have additional advice, I'll say thanks again and very much appreciated with the assistance!18:21
MinveraPraxis, you can start with `journalctl -b`18:21
tomreyndudels: i think we're done there. have fun.18:22
ADVWould a GDM/PAM question not be appropriate to post here?18:22
PraxisMinvera alright18:23
PraxisMinvera thanks18:23
tomreynADV: it's fine to ask here, but you won't get a reply if there's no one around who knows the answer to your question. you could also ask in #linux or in gnome related irc channels / networks or support forae18:23
Dianatomreyn it's not exactly a question, but just that I'm kind of new to this system, I've been using windows until now, and I don't even understand him18:23
DianaI would be more interested in the configurations of this system18:24
jhutchinsDiana: What did you try to do?  How did you try to do it?  What did you expect to happen?  What happened instead?18:24
tomreynDiana: well, you said you have a problem, care to describe it more? also, if you know which ubuntu version you have, this can help us help you.18:24
ADVtomreyn: Thanks for the response - I've been in the #gnome channel with zero luck. Thanks for the advice on the #linux channel.18:25
tomreynADV: you could also try to find some documentation online, but... that's rather limited for anything gnome* sadly18:25
Dianajhutchins that's because I looked on the internet, I saw some things to do in the terminal, but when I put those things in, it either gave me an error or failed18:26

Dianatomreyn if you can tell me where to enter to see the version it would be wonderful18:27
tomreynDiana: what always works is to open a "Terminal" window and type:  lsb_release -ds18:28
tomreynDiana: But you could probably also open "Settings" and then go to "About"18:29
rfmADV, PAM though used to have pretty good API docs.  As I remember, the only "feedback" from PAM modules is the return codes saying to reject/continue etc, and the callbacks for conversation prompts  I18:29
ADVrfm: I think you're correct - this is exactly what I've run into.18:30
Dianatomreyn Ubuntu 19.04 I think that would be right?18:30
tomreynDiana: oh, that's a very old Ubuntu release from 4 years ago. And it is no longer supported.18:31
tomreynDiana: I mean three years ago, 201918:32
rfmADV, the PAM interface was specifically designed to be pretty restrictive, so modules would be easily portable,,,18:32
tomreynDiana: you can try updating this to a supported ubuntu version ("release") but when it's so outdated it's usually better to do a fresh installation (after backing up your data).18:33
ADVrfm: Understood. Was hoping their was a way but sounds like there isn't so we will move on. Thanks!18:33

supercool1And I would need to kind of check my disk for any eventual disk error19:02
kucklehadenoughThis is a guess, you're checking root and are wanting to repair root while root is mounted?19:03
supercool1I just installed this Ubuntu19:03
elias_asupercool1: Is it a spinning HDD or SSD?19:03
supercool1SSD19:03
elias_asupercool1: I'd run a complete check on the SSD if you have a new installation and your data is backed up elsewhere.19:04
kucklehadenoughIf you're wanting to fix your machine, chroot and then run fsck on it19:04
supercool1And it is not ANY ssd, it is a pcie m.2 ssd19:04
supercool1kucklehadenough: I don´t think it a priviledge issue here. It´s more like I am trying to fix a mounted (in use) disk19:05
tomreynsupercool1: it IS surprising that this newly installed ubuntu system is already having file system issues that are beyond automatically repairable.19:05
supercool1What I can do is restart from CD/DVD and then try to run it19:05
Praxistomreyn the server runs ubuntu server 22.04.1, it's connected with a SFPD 10gig LAN with a fixed IP, the network is run on unifi, the remote computer is a mac19:06
supercool1tomreyn: you got it!19:06
elias_asupercool1: I'd still boot from live USB or the like and test the partitions on the SSD and also run a SMART test on the device.19:06
elias_asupercool1: That's the spirit!19:06
supercool1elias_a: yeah, I think i´ll not be able to do any different from that.19:07
kucklehadenoughHas nothing to do with that. I would chroot the whole system from a live usb and run tests and see what's wrong19:07
supercool1kucklehadenough: you sounds like a noob here19:08
tomreynPraxis: you seem to be into networking. have you run ping tests, yet? are you able to communicate with the remote at all? is there both ipv4 and ipv6 addressing in your LAN?19:08
supercool1I apreciate all your support guys!19:08
kucklehadenoughHey now, I am not the one with the busted system lol19:08
supercool1kucklehadenough: are you trying to hit my nerv?19:09
Praxistomreyn yeah, ping is normal from both the server and the laptop, and yes there's ipv6, but all the networking in the LAN is standard 0.0.0.0 addresses19:09
jhutchinssupercool1: Leave the attitude behind.19:10
Praxistomreyn so it I try to ssh into the server using the host name it will hang and do nothing. then if I restart avahi it logs in19:10
tomreynPraxis: okay, i'm asking about ipv4 / ipv6 becuase you mentioned that you could connect fine if you directly access the ip(4) address, whereas it did not work well with the hostname, i believe.19:10
Praxistomreyn that's correct19:11
tomreynPraxis: so the easiest test would be to add -4 to the ssh command19:11
tomreyn...still connecting to the hostname19:11
Praxistomreyn that did nothing19:12
Praxistomreyn like ssh hostname.local -419:12
tomreynPraxis: so it's more likely a dns issue19:12
tomreynPraxis: oh .local? bad idea.19:12
Praxistomreyn how so?19:13
tomreynthats unless it's on purpose?19:13
kucklehadenoughAre they sshing tunneling?19:13
tomreynPraxis: are you using .local for MDSN?19:13
tomreyn*MDNS19:13
Praxistomreyn I'm not familiar with that19:13
tomreynPraxis: do you use avahi on ubuntu to make all systems in the LAN aware what it's hostname is?19:14
Praxistomreyn yes19:14
tomreynPraxis: and you do not use a central dns server at the same time?19:15
Praxistomreyn i'm pretty sure that my DNS is handled by my router. Isn't that normal?19:16
rjwiiiUbuntu 20.04. Gnome extensions (ex "burn my windows") won't install or upgrade. I get the red ERROR button. Says I have to upgrade to gnome-browser-connector v6 ... ???19:17
tomreynPraxis: it is a common setup to have a home router act as a central resolver (recursive nameserver / dns server) for the LAN. with such setups you should not use a .local top level domain to address resources in your LAN, though.19:17
tomreynPraxis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.local19:17
Praxistomreyn something like a pi-hole? I don't have that set up yet19:18
tomreynPraxis: in short, the .local top level domain is to be used for the specific purpose of announcing "hey everyone, i am going to have the hostname blah.local and my ip address is ..." to all other devices in the LAN.19:18
Praxistomreyn that sounds about right. I'm not trying to keep anything on my internal network out of the loop19:19
tomreynPraxis: if you have multiple devices announce their own name resolution to the LAN then this can easily contradict with the information the central resolver on the router will hand out.19:20
Praxistomreyn That's weird, because I have had up to 3 servers running and it was never an issue, but right now I only have this one19:21
tomreynPraxis: so if you don't have .local set as the local domain name in your router, then you can be fine with this setup, having multiple ways to address systems on the LAN.19:21
tomreynbut you should not tell the router that it serves something on the .local domain19:21
tomreynanywys, this may be a separate issue to the one you're dealing with19:22
Praxistomreyn Yeah I'll have to read up on that19:22
tomreynrjwiii: is this extension compatible to your version of gnome-shell?19:23
Praxisright now I'm not getting any pages to resolve at all, and my PMS is down. So I can't go to hostname.local:9090 or 10.0.0.10:909019:23

tomreynrjwiii: whether or not an extension is compatible can be seen on the installation page. you need to match the gnome versions provided there (on the drop-down) with that of your installed gnome-shell package version (apt list --installed gnome-shell)19:26
supercool1I´ve used lsblk command to show me the list of disks19:26
supercool1and it appears sda (1, 2, 3)19:27
supercool1How do I point the fsck command to that disk, in which partition should I use it in case of journal corruption?19:28
tomreynrjwiii: maybe try a different web browser or the gnome-extensions-app (this is a command you can run when the corresponding package, gnome-shell-extensions-tool, is installed)19:28
tomreynPraxis: i don't think we can support this software here, but if you cannot connect to your ubuntu ssh server, we can try to help with that.19:29
supercool1sda3 is the one compaling from grub boot and by the size is the filesystem disk19:29
Praxistomreyn that's fine, I'm not here for plex support, I have a networking issue19:29

supercool1tomreyn: great, I will grab a chair19:34
tomreynsupercool1: if you share the command you ran and the output it produced, on a pastebin or image posting board, this help you get support.19:35
rjwiiitomreyn: seems that is installed already ... version 3.36.9 ... I selected that version from the list and it had me download a zip file ... not install instructions ...19:36
supercool1tomreyn: that´s the point, there were no output19:36
tomreynsupercool1: here's what i psted a long time ago, when you were in the recovery shell: <tomreyn> supercool1: mount -o remount,ro / && e2fsck /dev/sda319:37
supercool1or that was.. well19:37
tomreynsupercool1: but it's indeed better to repair your / (root file system) from a separate system19:37
supercool1tomreyn: that was a bit different situation19:37
tomreynsupercool1: so i'd recommend doing what elias suggested: <elias_a> supercool1: I'd still boot from live USB or the like and test the partitions on the SSD and also run a SMART test on the device.19:38
supercool1tomreyn: thats what I am doing19:38
supercool1tomreyn: I am currently running Ubuntu live cd19:39
tomreynrjwiii: generally speaking, gnome-shell extensions are a way to make your desktop unstable. sometimes they don't make it unstable and instead add or modify features in the way you want it or not.19:39
supercool1tomreyn: trying to fsck the issued disk19:39
supercool1tomreyn: SO I did lit the disks available from the command sudo lsblk19:40
tomreynsupercool1: good, have you identified the partition which contains your normal / file system, yet?19:40
supercool1tomreyn: I am guessing the /sda/sda3 is the filesystem partition by the size of it19:41
supercool1tomreyn: I run the command sudo sfck -f /sad/sda3 and kind of nothing happens19:41
tobispeaking of gnome shell extensions... I maintain gnome-shell-extension-autohidetopbar in Debian and upstream got a bug reported that the package is no longer available in 22.04 ... Is there a way to find out the reason for the removal?19:42
tomreynsupercool1: if you are running an ubuntu live / installer system then the command "sudo sfck -f /sad/sda3 " would probably return an error saying that this command does not exist.19:43
supercool1tomreyn: to be precise the following like get on the output fsck from util-linux 2.37.219:43
tomreynyou probably meant to run something along the lines of "sudo fsck /dev/sda3"19:43
supercool1tomreyn: sorry, my bad, I meant fsck19:43
supercool1tomreyn: as -f?19:44
murmeltobi: would it work on gnome42?19:44
tomreynsupercool1: you probably mean -f to e2fsck19:45
supercool1tomreyn: it *could* have worked already19:46
tomreynsupercool1: we would know if you would share both the exact commands you ran and the outputs they produced, on a pastebin or image board.19:46
supercool1Because, it is a fresh install and my disk quite fast19:46
tomreynsupercool1: there is an easy way to share the output of a command: you just append this to the command:   |& nc termbin.com 999919:47
tomreynthis then prints a url you can share here for the output, so you only need to report that and the command you ran19:47

tomreynPraxis: your output shows that conflicting (?) ip address resolutions have been reported for this hostname20:18
elias_atomreyn: Sure! Np.20:19
Praxistomreyn that would explain the behavior but what would cause that?20:19
Praxistomreyn Like is this a router issue? or something in the networking in ubuntu?20:19
tomreynPraxis: https://termbin.com/ytvq says that via link enp130s0f0 the hostname "xeon.local" was resolved as 10.0.0.10 (IPv4) and fe80::2e27:d7ff:fe4f:7088%3 (IPv6+scope), whereas via the virbr0 interface, it was resolved as 192.168.122.1 (IPv4)20:20
elias_asupercool1: e2fsck -fv /dev/sda3; echo $ would be the command we are looking for here.20:20
tomreynPraxis: so this system is getting different responses via different links.20:20
tomreynPraxis: and which one will be used will be chosen at random (more or less), so it will occasionally work and other times not20:21
Praxistomreyn virbr0 is a virtual bridge right? because I don't have any need for that...20:22
tomreynPraxis: or rather, you will be connecting to any *one* of these ip addresses, and not everyone of them may be having an ssh server listeining on them20:22
tomreynPraxis: it's just a name, but yes, it commonly refers to an interface connecting to a virtual network bridge20:23
Praxistomreyn how would I just disable that?20:24
Praxistomreyn I didn't even set that up...20:24
tomreynPraxis: just don't use a .local domain name for resources on your LAN and you should be fine20:24
Praxistomreyn um, that doesn't solve my problem at all, because NONE of my services resolve under the IP address20:25
tomreynPraxis: the bridge is probably part of some virtualization software you have installed, such as libvirt + qemu or virtualbox or gnome-boxes, or it could be some containerization system, such as docker, lxd etc.20:26
PraxisI don't use any virtualization right now.20:27
Praxistomreyn I used to use qemu, and I'd like to have VM's again, but this issue has taken down my whole server20:27
tomreynPraxis: sorry, i'm afraid i have to pause here, i'm going to need to have some food. if you need a quick temporary workaround you can place a fixed name resolution in /etc/hosts20:28
tomreynelias_a: thanks20:30
tomreynsupercool1: if you need more support with this, please talk to elias_a for now20:30
Praxistomreyn alright, i'll google that20:31
supercool1tomreyn: thank you a lot for the support.20:34
supercool1elias_a: sorry, today things are running fast here. I will be running the command is a bit.20:34
elias_asupercool1: Now I did not quite understand what you mean but let's just move along. :)20:36
elias_asupercool1: e2fsck -fv /dev/sda3; echo $ would be the command we are looking for here.20:36
supercool1elias_a: lol20:40
supercool1elias_a: do you need the termbin part of the command as well?20:40
elias_asupercool1: Preferably, yes so that I can see what is happening. :)20:41
supercool1elias_a: I think that makes it easy to figure the output instead of me trying to copy/paste the entire thing here, right?20:41
supercool1elias_a: alright20:41
supercool1elias_a: just a sec20:41
elias_asupercool1: Exactly. :)20:41
supercool1elias_a: : https://termbin.com/zb7u20:43
elias_aJust a dollar sign as output?20:44
supercool1elias_a: weird20:47
supercool1elias_a: here I got plently of lines20:47
tobimurmel: yes, it works with gnome 4220:49
elias_asupercool1: If termbin does not work correctly, could you use https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/ ?20:49
supercool1elias_a: sure20:50
elias_aPaste the command and the output.20:50
murmeltobi: hm, then no idea, as sadly ubuntu doesn't have tracker like debian20:50
tobimurmel: is there some mailing list about package removals?20:51
tobi(some place to look if/why packages got removed)20:51
tobisomething like this https://ftp-master.debian.org/removals.txt20:52
murmeltobi: not 100% sure but I assume it's in development lists or automatic notification lists20:53
supercool1elias_a: https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/jkrnxtfrjY/20:56
supercool1elias_a: seems there was no erros, right?20:57
elias_asupercool1: I don't see any errors. :O20:58
elias_asupercool1: Now run e2fsck respectively to all partitions and look for errors.21:00
murmelcan somebody verify that rmadison works on your end? waiting for 5 mins already for a query :S21:01
supercool1elias_a: how do I run for all partitions? Using just /dev/sda ?21:01
elias_asupercool1: No /dev/sdaX where X is the number of the partition.21:03
supercool1elias_a: https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/fFszYptWDr/21:04
elias_asupercool1: Was it an SSD connected to PCI bus?21:05
supercool1elias_a: elias_a I think the output for sda2 was the same as sda121:05
supercool1elias_a: yep21:05
supercool1elias_a: anyway, sda1 and sda2 contain no filesystem21:06
supercool1elias_a: perhaps it got solved21:07
supercool1elias_a: from trial an error21:07
elias_asupercool1: IMHO it is likely that for some reason you have managed to skip the creating of file systems while installing.21:07
supercool1elias_a: I think this is time for a reboot21:07
elias_asupercool1: Do that. If it does not help, try simply reinstalling if it is a new system.21:08
supercool1elias_a: I got the fist boot from it. It was running all right for five entire minutes21:08
supercool1elias_a: I already tryed. I think this one will be the tenth time I install Ubuntu on VB21:09
elias_asupercool1: This hints there could be a problem with either your HW or software handling the PCI chipset and bus.21:09
elias_asupercool1: VB?21:10
supercool1elias_a: first I tought the issue was with my computer, but now I already run it from 5 different machines ant it is always the same issue21:10
supercool1elias_a: yes, VirtualBox21:11
elias_asupercool1: Why did you not say that in the first place? :D21:12
supercool1elias_a: I did21:12
supercool1elias_a: perhaps was for tomreyn21:12
supercool1elias_a: :P21:12
supercool1elias_a: perhaps you haven´t seen this url as well https://askubuntu.com/questions/924170/error-on-ubuntu-boot-up-recovering-journal21:14
elias_asupercool1: What are the host and guest OSs in your case?21:16
supercool1elias_a: host ubuntu guest windows 1121:17
elias_asupercool1: If your host is Ubuntu and you have a Windows 11 guest, what do you mean by saying you are installing Ubuntu _on_ VirtualBox?21:19
supercool1elias_a: is it the other way arround?21:20
elias_asupercool1: What is the first OS your computer boots?21:21
elias_aI mean: what is the OS runnning Virtualbox?21:21
supercool1elias_a: Windows 1121:22
EriC^^supercool1: that thing is completing normal, ubuntu always displays that21:22
elias_asupercool1: Ok. I am out of answers now. Reason: I simply do not use Windows as a host OS. Ever. Always as a guest and even then without a network connection. :)21:23
elias_atomreyn and other helpful fellows out there, please help supercool1 . I have to go to bed now. Quite late here already... :)21:24
elias_asupercool1: I hope you solve the problem. :)21:25
EriC^^supercool1: that msg about fsck is normal, is that the issue or something else is going on?21:25
supercool1elias_a: thank you for the support!21:26
elias_asupercool1: You are welcome. :)21:27
=== sig is now known as bebop
supercool1EriC^^: I am running Ubuntu as a client on a VirtualBox host running Windows 11.21:28
supercool1EriC^^: There is thie error from boot like recovering journal21:29
supercool1EriC^^: everything started as a disk space failure, restart and boom21:29
EriC^^supercool1: that's not an error, if it says clean, ......blabla it's just a normal fsck at bootup21:29
supercool1EriC^^: it is not clean. I think somehow the disk gets full and there is no space to write this journal and there is no boot anymore21:30
EriC^^supercool1: what happens when you try to boot now?21:31
maxMcLion3just out of interest, what was the problem?21:45
supercool1EriC^^: I just figured a way to boot. I did boot from grub, advanced options and ask for free some space.21:45
EriC^^great supercool121:46
supercool1EriC^^: now I am inside Ubuntu but still instable and throwing messages of lack of disk space21:46
supercool1EriC^^: yeah, at least one step ahead21:47
EriC^^supercool1: type 'sudo apt-get clean'21:47
EriC^^then try sudo apt-get autoremove --purge21:47
maxMcLion3one way is to extend virtual disk of ubuntu.21:48
supercool1EriC^^: still need to use apt-get? Not just apt ?21:48
EriC^^yeah that's an excellent idea21:48
EriC^^supercool1: both work21:48
EriC^^supercool1: could you run 'sudo du -sh /* | nc termbin.com 9999' ?21:49
supercool1I will try to install GuestAdditions as well (if I can remeber that was not a good idea)21:49
EriC^^it should give an idea where most of the space is, if there's some type of issue in the logs like a repeating error it could eat up space21:49
maxMcLion3and also extend linux partition, but for that usually is needed to boot live cd, and i use gparted.21:50
EriC^^supercool1: this is a server install?21:50
EriC^^or gui?21:50
supercool1EriC^^: gui21:50
EriC^^supercool1: ah, i think it's probably too little space for it, maybe add 6-10gb21:51
EriC^^it's 9.5gb right now21:51
supercool1EriC^^: Wow.. I was about to tell you I did give it 10Gb21:52
EriC^^you mean recently you added 10gb?21:52
maxMcLion3for last ubuntu with gui, 10GB is well too low space to live21:52
supercool1EriC^^: the thing is this a fresh install21:53
EriC^^even so, i installed ubuntu i think 2-3 days ago and just checked, it's eating 15gb right now, though i did install some apps21:53
supercool1EriC^^: I will resintall it with a bigger disk then. Hope this is the issue21:53
EriC^^probably 10gb it barely just fits21:53
EriC^^supercool1: you can extend the disk space without reinstalling21:54
geniihttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements21:54
supercool1EriC^^: exaclty21:54
genii25G stated there21:54
EriC^^you have to extend it from virtualbox, then boot into ubuntu, it'll appear as a larger disk then you'll need to extend the partition+fs21:54
supercool1EriC^^: the disk is a image from VirtualBox in this case21:54
EriC^^if it's a fresh install though i'd just reinstall using a better disk, now that i think of it more21:55
maxMcLion3I reccomend atleast 20gb, depends on use, and when you give it 30-40 it does not matter if disk type is dyamiccly allocated, it will just eat up space as it grows21:55
supercool1maxMcLion3: Wow.. lots of space21:55
supercool1I did change the .vdi file for 100Gb on Virtual Media Manager21:57
maxMcLion3supercool1 you may try to extend partition or reinstall ubuntu, because additional space by itself ubuntu wont be able to use21:58
supercool1maxMcLion3: yes, that is what I though. I solved the Host size issue, not the client.21:59
maxMcLion3you may just run ubuntu installer, and chose "try ubuntu". after that you may find program gparted, it is really user friendly, and shows you partitions in your disk.22:00
supercool1maxMcLion3: well I thank you but I will just restart the process. Nowadays with those pcie ssds it is a pleasure to install a new OS.22:01
supercool1see.. fresh install ready!22:01
maxMcLion3and if ubuntu is fresh :)  just can reinstall it :D22:01
supercool1Now, lets see if the problem persists22:02

Guest4722.04 had working firefox in X11 mode on live-usb but after installing to disk, choosing the minimal program option, firefox only launches with wayland environment variable.  KiCAD which also runs xwayland is not able to draw a window either.  No errors, just a invisible window which have graphical artifacts when dragging other windows over it.23:32
Guest47No errors in terminal.23:32
Guest47maybe intel  i915 dri drivers are proprietary23:34
Guest47or maybe I need libwayland-egl1-mesa or something23:36
Guest47I will try xorg session23:54
Guest47Now firefox and kicad runs in xorg23:56
