iomari891 | How can I do a complete reinstall of kde. I cant find a solution as to why my lock screen does not accept my password anymore. It started when I mistakenly changed ownership on some root folders to the www-data user. I recovered and was able to restore root ownership but my lock screen hasn't worked sice. So I'm hoping I can reinstall all relevant kde files with a reinstall. | 15:02 |
iomari891 | "apt reinstall kde-full" completes in a few seconds so it's not really reinstalling. | 15:03 |
iomari891 | same goes for "apt install --reinstall kde-plasma-desktop" | 15:03 |
alkisg | Try `sudo dpkg -V`, it will show you if some of the package files have been changed | 15:04 |
iomari891 | showing me tons of missing files in /usr/share. List si still going..... | 15:06 |
iomari891 | But I didn't delete anything so that is not the issue I think. | 15:06 |
iomari891 | still processing..... | 15:08 |
IrcsomeBot | <Omar> Ctrl + z stops the process and you can continue it with fg (re @PJtunes: Is there any problem though???) | 15:21 |
IrcsomeBot | <Omar> I don't know if you can continue without stopping it in the first place (re @PJtunes: Is there any problem though???) | 15:22 |
IrcsomeBot | <Omar> I think it will continue from where it stopped (re @PJtunes: Omar | 15:23 |

alkisg | iomari891: if the files are missing, then you need to reinstall these packages | 16:27 |
alkisg | dpkg -V should have clean output unless you deliberately remember diverting files or editing conffiles etc | 16:27 |
alkisg | It's definitely a serious issue that needs to be solved before trying anything else | 16:27 |
zztopless | Morning everyone | 18:24 |
zztopless | I'm wanting to make a bunch of keyboard shortcuts in kubuntu (20.04), has anyone ever come across a tool to convert text strings to the format needed for the 'send keyboard input' option in kb? | 18:26 |

IrcsomeBot | <PJtunes> Yh I've stopped it already (re @Omar: I don't know if you can continue without stopping it in the first place) | 18:54 |
IrcsomeBot | <PJtunes> Alright (re @Omar: I think it will continue from where it stopped) | 18:54 |
IrcsomeBot | <PJtunes> I've not really tried charging my phone with my PC though, just transfers | 18:58 |
IrcsomeBot | <PJtunes> I don't really have any idea about it for kubuntu, windows allow it though | 18:58 |
IrcsomeBot | <PJtunes> It should be possible on Kubuntu, maybe (re @Omar: I want to be able to charge my phone by my laptop when it is on sleep mode can i make it possible by the operating system or it just comes with the laptop?) | 18:58 |
IrcsomeBot | <ksenchy> How do you figure out why apt is keeping back some packages and how to disable it | 19:39 |
arraybolt3 | @ksenchy: apt-cache policy <packagename> | 19:41 |
arraybolt3 | @ksenchy: You're probably looking at phased updates - they're there to make the update process more stable and to avoid overloading Ubuntu's servers. You should probably leave them enabled. | 19:41 |
arraybolt3 | You'll see something like (phased: 60%) if a package is phasing - for instance right now a VirtualBox update is being delayed for me due to phasing. | 19:42 |
IrcsomeBot | <ksenchy> Will this be disabled on 22.10 | 19:42 |
arraybolt3 | @ksenchy: Likely not. It was an intentional change to avoid breaking people's computers. | 19:43 |
IrcsomeBot | <ksenchy> https://irc-attachments.kde.org/b442bb3c/file_60134.jpg | 19:43 |
IrcsomeBot | <ksenchy> Here is what I see | 19:43 |
IrcsomeBot | <ksenchy> And having to type this in manually is a pain | 19:43 |
arraybolt3 | @ksenchy: One moment, looking... | 19:44 |
arraybolt3 | @ksenchy: The point is you should **not** type that in manually. If the packages are being held back, it's on purpose, they'll install when it's time for them to. | 19:44 |
arraybolt3 | @ksenchy: Currently it appears that libreoffice-qt5 is 30% phased, so that explains at least part of those held back packages. I would guess that the rest are being held back for the same reason. | 19:45 |
arraybolt3 | Other packages in that list are also 30% phased. | 19:45 |
IrcsomeBot | <ksenchy> Understood | 19:46 |
arraybolt3 | @ksenchy: The idea is that, when an update is pushed through, some users get the update earlier than others. If they start encountering problems, Ubuntu can stop the package from continuing to be rolled out before it breaks stuff for most all Ubuntu users. That way you have a much better chance of your system working well. | 19:47 |
arraybolt3 | It is confusing though that it just says "held back", it would have been a very nice UI decision if it said "The following packages are phasing and are not yet ready to be installed on your system" or something like that. | 19:47 |
genii | "can't do what you requested" vs "this is why what you requested can't be done" | 19:50 |
