semDo people still do dual boots on new machines a lot these days03:30
Bashing-omsem: Not so much as in the past - what with lots of ram and the proliferation of VMs.03:40
semI have a newish Thinkpad tablet thing, and I am considering installing Ubuntu under WSL instead of a dualboot because of dual boot problems in the past03:41
semThe thing I'm sad about though is that it will be higher latency than bare metal, for live audio processing03:42
arraybolt3[m]WSL is known for having a fair share of problems (a lot of them related to the absence of systemd within WSL, though that has supposedly recently changed, or so I've heard if I'm remembering correctly). Your mileage may vary, if you're already running Windows, you can try it and find out if it works.08:26

murmelarraybolt3[m]: let's see how it works out, as for now it's not even in the stable branch (not enabled by default)09:06

* ogra knows why he still uses IRC directly 🙂09:08
murmelogra: so you don't have to deal with e2e? ^^09:08
ograhehe09:09
ograso i dotn have t deal with service outages from attackers that think hacking a tech i dont use anyway is cool ... 09:10

lhp22arraybolt3: didn't know about this channel ! :o14:55
arraybolt3o/14:55
lhp22indeed, i'm not a great user of irc. I come on libera chat when I get serious problems I can't success handling14:55
arraybolt3There's a ton of Ubuntu-related channels for various different things.14:56
lhp22Really shoud install irc client14:56
arraybolt3If you're on Ubuntu (with GNOME Desktop), I use HexChat. On KDE, Quassel or Konversation might be better.14:56
lhp22The problem is : here, i'm from a windows one (some games still lock me), i've an android phone, a tiny laptop on arch x)14:57
lhp22And on arch, I switch between different desktop environments x)14:58
lhp22so web interface are great for me (I'm from gamja here)14:58
arraybolt3Ah, I've not used Windows as my main OS for years, so no advice there.14:58
arraybolt3And I don't own an Android phone so :/14:58
arraybolt3(And I use HexChat via the Linux Development Environment on my Chromebook.)14:58
lhp22I understand. I use windows only for 2 games, and tehcnically i'm on a /e/-phone x)14:59
lhp22So, difficult, even if I think that web interfaces are too much used14:59
lhp22OH14:59
lhp22ABOUT THE LOCALES14:59
arraybolt3Ah, one moment...14:59
arraybolt3(Do you have your full desktop installed yet?)14:59
lhp22Not yet. Just successfully logged in as root14:59
lhp22Just added a passwd for root15:00
arraybolt3lhp22: That's actually usually a bad idea on Ubuntu.15:00
arraybolt3lhp22: The "correct" way to do it is to make a user with sudoers access.15:00
lhp22Oh, it's better using gui only ?15:00
arraybolt3Root should always remain passwordless, and you elevate to root for individual commands using sudo from your user.15:00
lhp22Yes, I know, but I wanted/can (to) do it from this root account15:00
lhp22It's just for the building phase15:00
arraybolt3Well, you can proceed, but do NOT turn on your desktop environment from root, that could cause all sorts of nonsense.15:00
lhp22I certainly not let a root account easily accessible to new user15:01
arraybolt3Probably make the new user and install the desktop environment here, then sign into it from the new user.15:01
lhp22Ah yes, I got it on my arch some years ago x)15:01
lhp22Install as root, create the new user, reboot ?15:01
arraybolt3Sounds right.15:01
lhp22And for locales ?15:02
lhp22(bash reminds me that there are not set up)15:02
arraybolt3Once you have the desktop installed, locale handling can be done from within the GUI.15:02
lhp22Ok15:02
arraybolt3(I believe, at least.)15:02
lhp22Yes, I've heard that'd better to do the biggest part from the gui on ubuntu15:02
lhp22about the updates : same, isn't it ? Onlyt from the gui ?15:02
lhp22I heard it once15:03
arraybolt3Updates can be done from the terminal.15:03
lhp22Upgrades too ? >.>15:03
arraybolt3Really, most of Ubuntu can be done from the terminal. Probably the locales can, too, but the GUI is easy.15:03
lhp22ok15:03
arraybolt3Upgrades... (sucks in air through teeth) upgrades go wrong so frequently that I would never recommend upgrading from one release to the next. Clean install every time, that's how I do it.15:04
arraybolt3But with how complicated this was, you may really want to upgrade, so...15:04
lhp22So, I think I'm going to stop here. I'm on this bios-problematic computer for 7 hours. I need rest. Thanks for all your help ! You (and friend of mine) thank you a lot !15:04
arraybolt3Personally, I'd upgrade through the terminal.15:04
arraybolt3lhp22: Glad to help!15:04
