dareth[m] | Hello! May I link to a problem where you can read more in depth about it? It is concerning Ubuntu Studio and AMD GPU drivers. I can't seem to figure it out and keep getting this same error | 07:33 |
dareth[m] | I'll come back later today and again tomorrow to see if anyone replied. I'll link to the thingie anyway and hopefully someone can help me out! | 07:41 |
dareth[m] | My problem is such a niche thing that no amount of googling searching led me almost any results, let alone solutions haha. | 07:41 |
dareth[m] | Let me know what you guys think: | 07:41 |
dareth[m] | https://askubuntu.com/questions/1434471/trouble-installing-amd-drivers-on-ubuntu-studio | 07:41 |
dareth[m] | s/led/gave/ | 07:41 |
dareth[m] | I specifically need to do this so I can utilize my GPU in Blender through HIP. Whenever I pick HIP as the Cycle Render Device it just says "No compatible GPUs found for Cycles." etc, etc. People online said the drivers aren't installed properly but whenever I try, I get the error specified in the link above. | 07:44 |
dareth[m] | Appreciate any help in the future! <3 | 07:44 |
Eickmeyer[m] | dareth: The proprietary AMD GPU drivers (AMD GPU Pro) have been nothing but s source of frustration for me in the past. Unless you 1) have a GPU card that you know with 100% certainty supports them, or 2) can't get by with the built-in amd gpu drivers in the kernel (developed by AMD themselves), I'd recommend staying away from them. Furthermore, since they're not in the Ubuntu repositories, they're not supported here. | 15:13 |
Eickmeyer[m] | You will have to seek support from AMD or Ask Ubuntu, which you've already done. | 15:13 |
dareth[m] | Eickmeyer: Thank you for replying! Appreciate it very much! That is very unfortunate though, and I am sorry it has been a frustration for you. It is very strange because my card I believe should be supported and I think it is listed on their site. Not specifically listed but it is listed as apart of the family cards they listed (the 5000 series). It is a 5700XT and is one generation behind, came out in 2019 I believe. When I read on | 18:25 |
dareth[m] | their website it almost sounded sometimes like their latest cards, the 5000 and 6000 series cards had the most support :( | 18:25 |
dareth[m] | I am not very OS tech savvy so I might be horribly wrong in this, but could it also maybe be a combination of the OS and GPU? Because in that error message from the link, it almost sounded like it didn't know about / support the Low Latency Kernel and they didn't have a specific driver for it? I am not sure. | 18:25 |
dareth[m] | Do you think trying out Kubuntu would solve this or is it absolutely just an AMD problem? It would make me very sad if it was either one of those really, because I liked Ubuntu Studio a lot lol | 18:25 |
Eickmeyer[m] | dareth: It's absolutely an AMD problem. You'll get the same answer from Kubuntu, we share the same policies regarding support (we're both official Ubuntu flavors and use the exact same repositories and packages). | 18:27 |
Eickmeyer[m] | !amd | 18:28 |
ubottu | On Ubuntu, AMD's official Linux graphics driver "amdgpu" is automatically loaded for matching hardware. Very old cards use driver "radeon" (r300, r600) instead. See the !man pages for X options, "modinfo -p <graphics-driver>" for kernel parameters. Both drivers are open source and integrate with MESA and !DRI. Drivers "amdgpu-pro", "fglrx" and "ati" are not supported here. | 18:28 |
dareth[m] | Eickmeyer: Awgh real shame. Guess I'll have to wait for AMD to catch up then haha. I'll still keep Ubuntu Studio on a partition drive because I honestly did like it a lot, you guys did an absolutely great job on it and I loved it a lot. Keep it up! | 18:30 |
dareth[m] | I'll be awaiting for Ask Ubuntu to also reply to that thread and I'll try to hit up AMD themselves to see what they say. But knowing large companies like them, they probably will either take an extremely long time to come back, if at all. | 18:32 |
Eickmeyer[m] | I looked and there are already some comment replies, so take a look. | 18:32 |
dareth[m] | Oh wait, I am dumb. I didn't realize that small text there were the replies 😂 My bad. I kept even scrolling down to the bottom but kept going right by it | 18:34 |
dareth[m] | I thought those were auto suggested articles of similar problems so looked right by them haha. Sorry about that. Alright, thank you very much for your time! | 18:34 |
dareth[m] | I'll head out again but appreciate all the help! <3 | 18:35 |
