funkyflashfive[mOk, I wasn't sure  if it was something specific to the studio change of desktop environment00:02
rain_man[m]> <@rain_man:matrix.org> hi... (full message at <https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/libera.chat/7ee2b8e583b323d8609887f05ec426c69c962acb>)08:42
tomreynrain_man[m]: to make sddm start wayland, you'd need to edit sddm.conf and set DisplayServer=wayland09:54
tomreynbut i'm not sure whether this is already supported by the sddm version you're using (nor which version introduced support exactly=09:54
tomreynalso, you'd need wayland installed, too, of course09:55
tomreynthis arch linux documentation has more info: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/SDDM#Running_under_Wayland09:56
tomreyni'd also consider this experimental and, unless you're quite experienced in this area, the most likely result is that you'll end up with a broken graphical desktop09:58

rain_man[m]> <@rain_man:matrix.org> Hi guys... (full message at <https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/libera.chat/32d1b296c5902fee9ec29529264c98b63126e13c>)12:06
Eickmeyer[m]rain_man: Have you asked for help in a more active channel, like #ubuntu:libera.chat ?14:11
Eickmeyer[m]Or even #kubuntu:libera.chat as they're the ones who maintain the packages unlike us who just use the same packages?14:12
Eickmeyer[m]Because what you're describing is not an Ubuntu Studio-specific issue.14:13
Eickmeyer[m]And monologuing is against the IRC guidelines, which apply here as well.14:13
krytarikWell, thankfully on the IRC side all we see is a "hi" and a link that we may want to click or not.. >_<14:19
rain_man[m]<Eickmeyer[m]> "Because what you're describing..." <- okay will do. thanks for the patience. 14:26
rain_man[m]<Eickmeyer[m]> "And monologuing is against the..." <- Apologies, I am not used to this type of forum14:26
Eickmeyerkrytarik: You can think of that link (anytime you see libera.ems.host) as a built-in pastebin.14:27
krytarikYeah, I know, but I won't click a pastebin link with only "hi" as an intro either. XD14:29
GideonvanderKolfHi. Quick question - does Ubuntu Studio 22.04 use Pipewire by default? When starting Jack through Studio Controls and/or QJackCtl, is Pipewire actually used as the Jack backend and not the traditional jackd itself?17:34
arraybolt3[m]Gideon van der Kolf: No, 22.04 still uses PulseAudio and JACK. We tried to make the setup you're mentioning work in 22.10 IIUC, but due to some hiccups we still haven't implemented it.17:43
GideonvanderKolfI see that Pipewire is installed and running on my system. Is it disabled then? Or did I do something to cause it to be installed maybe...18:32
GideonvanderKolf<arraybolt3[m]> "Gideon van der Kolf: No, 22.04..." <- From what I understand, many use Pipewire daily but it may not be completely ready yet. I would imagine it's probably best to give it a bit more chance to mature before using it as the default for a pro-audio distro.18:35
Eickmeyer[m]Pipewire is not configured to run on Ubuntu Studio out of the box. There might be pipewire installed, but it is not configured as the sound server.18:44
OvenWerksyes pipewire is running but no applications seeking an audio device see it. Unfortunately, the next step forward is to switch completely to pipewrie and then figure out jack/pulse integration or switching after that. This means a longer development time just to get to the next step which would be making it easily switchable.19:18
OvenWerkspipewire does not make a good intermediary step such as switch pulse out for pipewire, an easy switch. Pipewire is not ready to completely replace jack either because it does not support any other jack back ends than alsa. So users who need the ffado, netjack, etc. backends would not be able to use pipewire alone.19:21
OvenWerksThe lack of reasonable ALSA support for firewire devices is a full stop for me switching. The firewire device is better than the current crop of USB2.2 audio devices available and besides it seems like a really bad idea to replace something "just because". Aside from the cost of doing so for no real reason.19:24
