fooI deleted an 8GB file via rm file.txt. The free space hasn't cleared according to df -h. Is there something else I can do here? 02:50
sarnoldfoo: try lsof, it might be held open by a process; kill that process02:51
sarnoldfoo: it's also possible that the file had multiple hard links. this is rare, but it can happen02:51
foosarnold: gah, of course. Had tail -f on the file in another term03:07

uzeeHi folks, does anyone know if there has been any changes to the Ubuntu 20 installer or its functionality recently? I used to be able to attach the mini ISO to a new VM and then hit TAB to customize the startup options by giving my preseed file server/path. But now once I hit enter, it just sits there frozen and in some cases I see a kernel panic. I want to provide the link for the screenshot of the error, is there a pastebin type service that people 16:01
uzeeprefer here?16:01

ogramini iso ? 16:02
ograthat has never been a supported install method (and in fact would give you some kind of frnkenstein install ... i.e. a set of debian defaults on top of ubuntu packages)16:03

uzeethanks so much, here's the imgur link: https://imgur.com/a/hELXc0s16:05
uzeeogra: I have to say I only found outr today that it wasn't a supported method :) basically I set this up last year and every now and then when I needed to provision a new VM, it just worked with the mini ISO16:06
ogranot to mention that d-i has completely been dropped from ubuntu in 2021 ...16:06
uzeelotuspsychje: sorry I dont know what you meant by !paste16:07
ograthat triggered the bot to tell you abut the pastebin 😉16:07
uzeeogra: oh, so I guess that means, I should redo my VM provisioning process and use the 'autoinstaller' ? am I understanding correctly?16:07
ograyep, exactly 16:08
uzeeogra: :) oops, thanks16:08
ograno worries 🙂16:08
uzeeok, so this obviously requires some necessary reading. But out of curiosity, would you know why it may have stopped working? I was able to use the same process as recent as just 2-3 months ago16:09
ograi havent ooked at 20.04 for a long time, but your error looks like there is an unsupported compression method in use for the initrd 16:10
ogra(or something aong these lines)16:11
ogra*along16:11
uzeeogra: I agree, what confuses me is that it is the same mini.iso image that worked recently. Per my understanding, the mini image just loads the boot loader for the installer and then reads the preseed file for setting up the OS. So the freezing happens before it can even reach the preseed server16:14
uzeeThe only thing that changed in our env was that we updated the VMware ESXi/vcenter to a minor revision16:15
uzeeThe underlying vmware hardware and storage is the same.... hence really confusing16:15
ograwell, d-i lives inside the initrd ... there might have been an update to the kernel package that made it go out of sync16:16
uzeehmm, ok. yeah I cant pretend I know what happens exactly and in which order :) so yes, it probably has a number of things that happen and any one of them could no longer be compatible. I guess its probably not worth it to dig deeper just for understanding, since I have to switch the whole thing to autoinstaller :)16:18
uzeethanks much16:18
ograright, and nobody will fix the mini.iso either 16:18
ogragood luck 16:18
