lotuspsychjegood morning01:41
guivercI was just reminded of the benefits of systemd-oomd existing in recent releases of Ubuntu...    (this box doesn't have it, and I've only realized that's why box was becoming slow.. having remembered what I used to do pre-systemd-oomd days to self manage low-memory...)02:07
sarnoldwhich process did you kill?02:09
guivercbrowsers, both firefox & chromium.... an extension I believe causes memory-leak; as they're less problematic without extensions but I want the benefits of those extensions02:12
guivercthis box has only 8gb which maybe matters...02:15
JanCwhy would you want systemd to kill applications without warning?03:42
guivercI can understand that logic... I've had issues with browsers for ages; and prior to focal cycle would self-manage; systemd-oomd just makes that a little easier/faster  (it closes them down instead of me being forced to.. yeah it closes telegram & another snap as well on occasion too, for me it mostly picks on snap packages)03:59
guivercon this box (without systemd-oomd) last ~12 hours before I realized I didn't have systemd-oomd & the difference.. I'd walk away & do other things, then return & continue later... systemd-oomd gives me control faster!   (I'll keep myself ready to step in now so it's not 10-15 min delay before I can re-gain control..)04:01

JanCguiverc[m]: it could also close a browser with unsaved work though...19:10
JanCit would be much more useful if browsers had a mechanism to warn for pages that use exceptional amounts of memory...19:10
JanCe.g. I just closed a tab that was using 2 GiB(!) on its own19:10
JanCclearly something is leaking memory on that page...19:11
JanCprobably some crappy script that loads new content every N sec/min but forgets to delete the previous content...19:13
JanCor maybe we need a shamelist of such sites and have browsers warn users whenever they visit such a site...19:15
JanCor more in general, have something in the desktop environment that can warn when memory issues are close to happening & suggest solutions...21:03
