=== arraybolt3_ is now known as arraybolt3 [17:36] hello is the latest version of qtractor installed on ubuntu studio? [17:36] I have latest ubuntu studio [18:06] synthriffsgirl[m: so far as I can tell, ubuntu ships 0.9.27 [18:07] which is two releases back from https://www.qtractor.org/qtractor-downloads.html [18:08] Eickmeyer[m]: might be willing to add newer ones to our backports ppa. [18:09] It kinda depends on what releases debian has hanging around [18:25] is it possible to update to the latest version? many new features are added in that one [18:27] i'm a beginner, what's meant by 'backports"? [18:28] so currently it's not possible to update to latest qtractor using ubuntu's repository since there is no newer package online, right? [18:28] That appears to be correct [18:29] my .27 is already from the backports PPA [18:29] I think it's important , because ubuntu studio focuses on audio, graphics, .., to have especially latest versions of those software :) [18:29] backport = ? I don't know why it's called that way [18:29] We do try to keep up, but there are constrants to what we can do too. I think our packager is away this week. [18:30] is it generally true the same ubuntu packages are used for ubuntu studio? [18:30] so what i find in ubuntu = what i find in studio? [18:30] see https://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/backports [18:31] it is genmerally true yes, except for the backports PPA which tries to do a better job and often has newer versions than the standard ubuntu versions [18:32] synthriffsgirl[m: in ubuntu studio, in the menu under system you should find the ubuntustudio-intaller [18:33] At the bottom of that application (applet?) there is a button to enable backports ppa. [18:34] if you click on that (and wait while it plays around for a while) normal upgrades will pull in the latest version we have at the time [18:34] thx! [18:34] rather than what the main repositories have [18:34] the main repo = the ubuntu one, right? [18:35] yes [18:35] so the get specific studio updates, i need the backports? [18:35] it is actually a collection of three of them I think. [18:35] ok :) when the packager is back, will the latest qtractor be there ? [18:36] i use it a lot but i have no knowledge of compiling :( i wait for update package [18:36] ask Eickmeyer[m] he pops in here once and a while even when away. [18:36] also ardour is 6.9 while 7.0 is here. maybe i can request this too? it's a HUGE update [18:37] it sure is, and I expect it is planed (actually 7.1 or maybe 7.2 [18:37] I think 7.1 is out but there are some bugs in it that will likely lead to a 7.2 very shortly [18:40] I have worked on ardour in the past on remote control stuff such as MIDI controllers and OSC controllers, The foldback monitoring chunk is probably the most visible bit I add to ardour though. but that was all 6.* stuff I have been too busy of late. [18:40] what about adding software synths to ubuntu studio pre-installed? or this not a good idea? [18:41] for example surge-xt, ... [18:41] There are some already [18:41] ow! what ones? I didn't see them [18:41] i'm still a beginner :D [18:46] two places: look under audio production instruments for one (these will require jack to be running) or from ardour or qtractor use a plugin. [18:47] I don't think surge is there though. however, there are downloads for surge for linux on their website: https://github.com/surge-synthesizer/releases-xt/releases [18:48] The *.deb file should just install or maybe better use the [18:48] surge-xt-linux-1.1.2-pluginsonly.tar.gz download and put them in a place they can be found. gimme a sec. [18:52] The archive comes with both lv2 and vst3 plugins. both synth and effects. If you have only one user you can copy or move them into ~/.lv2 or .vst I tend to favour the LV2 versions. [18:56] If you feel ardour or qtractor are a bit heavyweight for just running plugins, Carla will work as just a plugin rack. [19:01] Yup, that makes noise :) [19:02] * OvenWerks is anoyed with file names that use spaces [19:06] Surge XT is open source (GPL3.0) and so in theory could be added to ubuntu ( Eickmeyer[m] ??) [20:07] synthriffsgirl[m, OvenWerks: RE: qtractor: I saw some stuff coming from Debian that could be backported, but I've been rather focused on the Ubuntu Summit coming up this next week where I'm presenting. RE: Ardour: 7.0 is in the Ardour Backports, just unannounced (again, time constraints). RE: Surge XT: was working on it, again, time constraints. [20:30] Eickmeyer[m]: No rush, I think synthriffsgirl[m was just happy that new stuff would just show up if he enabled backports [20:30] Eickmeyer[m]: should we add an other button on installer for ardour? :) [20:30] maybe not needed. [20:45] OvenWerks: Nah, it only gets added if Ardour releases a new major version when there's an LTS still hanging around. This is one of those times. Last time we had to this was when 6.0 came out. [22:07] Eickmeyer: one might argue that all other releases are bug fixes and should be back ported :) [22:28] Eickmeyer: thx. Surge should really be added because it's GREAT [22:29] OvenWerks: if I install the .deb file of surge, should qtractor and ardour find the plugin automatically? Or do I need to do more things? [22:30] OvenWerks: i prefer the .deb because i don't know anything about folders to put my plugins [22:34] OvenWerks: so basically I want to know if the DAWs in ubuntu studio find the plugins automatically after installing a new plugin , using a .deb file. Thanks for the help [22:37] Eickmeyer: can Dexed be added too? https://asb2m10.github.io/dexed/ [22:40] Both dexed and surge-xt have a standalone version so that's cool too to add in the menu somewhere. So they work without a DAW [22:52] as a beginner, I want to ask: is the only fundamental difference between ubuntu and ubuntu studio that studio uses a low latency kernel and ubuntu not? [22:52] (and of course the use of KDE) [22:52] or is there more things different between? [22:57] Eickmeyer: any interest in adding this one too? https://zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.io/ I know there is yoshimi already there, but this one is also having a nice GUI :)
