OvenWerksEickmeyer[m]: FYI, Ardour 7.0 is in debian, this machine is currently installing it (bookworm).00:47
OvenWerksit seems the package may be wrong as it tries to rm ~/.config/ardour6/00:48
OvenWerks It should not do this and fails anyway because the directory is not empty.00:49
OvenWerksalso, Ardour 7.0 will look for that directory and ask if it should use the settings from that directory (normally yes). So if the package manager manages to rm that directory, that would be bad anyway.00:50
Eickmeyer[m]OvenWerks: It's in the ardour backports repository (ppa:ubuntustudio-ppa/backports) already, so you didn't need to install from Debian.14:53
Eickmeyer[m]But yes, that's a bug that has been reported.14:53
Eickmeyer[m]And I'm back from Prague, but my availability is still sparse until Monday. Parents are moving and we need to help.14:54
OvenWerksEickmeyer[m]: the reason I installed from debian is that machine has debian installed because it is 32 bit.14:58
OvenWerksEickmeyer[m]: did you see Paul or Robin when you were there? I think Robin said he would be there14:59
OvenWerksAnd Paul was in town at least15:00
Eickmeyer[m]Yeah, I saw both! Great guys!15:00
Eickmeyer[m]Robin might be implementing a tap-tempo via midi feature for me. :)15:01
OvenWerksmakes me wish I had been able to go for that much anyway15:01
OvenWerkshow was the rest?15:01
Eickmeyer[m]They were both at my talk.15:01
Eickmeyer[m]The rest was amazing. Great networking opportunity, great getting to know people that I've been interacting with sometimes on a daily basis.15:02
Eickmeyer[m]And then there's ilvipero who organized pretty much the whole thing.15:03
Eickmeyer[m](Ping for no reason except reasons)15:03
ilviperoErich Eickmeyer: thank you for your help introducing Lorenzo's music, Eylul, Paul and Robin and recommending to invite them . They all did really well at the Ubuntu Summit. I hope it was also an opportunity for you all to network and get more opportunities.15:09
ilviperoHopefully next year Filipe will join and bring his story. He said it was not a good time for him this year to do it.15:10
Eickmeyer[m]ilvipero: Oh, it absolutely was! Thanks for getting it all together!15:10
Eickmeyer[m]And yeah, Filipe and I talked, he was a bit more withdrawn. Seemed to have a lot on his mind, which is fine, but he brought some good questions to my talk. A few hours before my talk I would've been unprepared, but having talked to Dimitri Ledkov just before that, it worked out!15:12
Eickmeyer[m](it was regarding an RT kernel)15:12
OvenWerksRT Kernel != silver bullet15:13
Eickmeyer[m]OvenWerks: Exactly.15:16
eylul[m]<ilvipero> "Erich Eickmeyer: thank you for..." <- Thank you very much both you and erich for inviting all of us. it was lovely to meet you both and everyone else mentioned. <319:04
OvenWerksEickmeyer[m]: is ubuntustudio the only flavour that still uses pulse? Is ubuntu therefore hoping to get rid of pulse from the repos soon(ish)?22:10
Eickmeyer[m]OvenWerks: No, Ubuntu Desktop is the only flavor that uses Pipewire.22:11
OvenWerksEickmeyer[m]: my FireWire device does work as an ALSA device under PW but I have not tried taking the latency down below 25622:11
Eickmeyer[m]Pulse will not disappear from the repos, just demoted to Universe.22:12
Eickmeyer[m]It's still in Debian, and Debian will be on pulse for the forseable future.22:12
OvenWerksSo I should at least check to see if pulseaudio exists22:13
Eickmeyer[m]It'll be automatically synced at least. I repeat, it will NOT go away.22:13
Eickmeyer[m]Oh, I see what you mean.22:14
Eickmeyer[m]Yeah, good call.22:14
OvenWerkssomeone on desktop who installs controls needs it to work22:14
Eickmeyer[m]Code paranoia is good code.22:14
OvenWerksI think making it a depend would possiblly break things22:15
Eickmeyer[m]Correct. A depend is not a good idea.22:41
OvenWerksEickmeyer[m]: something else that seems to have happened with firewire code (not sure if it is the ALSA fw stack, kernel or ffado) is that it seems the ffado driver will still work with the alsa fw module installed and active. So we may be able to get pw to release the device to jack or rather a wrapper script that runs jack.22:41
Eickmeyer[m]Why not the pw-jack module?22:42
OvenWerksthen jack might be able to run with ffado and pw might decide to auto bridge.22:43
OvenWerkspw-jack just runs jack things on pw it does not bridge so far as I know.22:43
Eickmeyer[m]It's supposed to be a literal replacement.22:44
OvenWerksThe way I am using PW right now, everything works. No jack no pulse but FF sees pulse and ardour sees jack22:45
OvenWerks very complete. The only problem is (or has been anyway) that low latency operation with a FW device has not been possible22:46
Eickmeyer[m]I see.22:46
OvenWerksI would say that FW performance is the only ting holding pw back... perhaps jack-net for a few people22:47
OvenWerksThat is not pw's fault but ALSA's22:47
Eickmeyer[m]Sure.22:48
BrianHechinger[mWhere is Ubuntu Summit going to be next year? Prague is sorta kinda close to me. :-D23:01
Eickmeyer[m]No announcement has been made on that, Brian Hechinger .23:03
BrianHechinger[mObviously a year away so I'll keep my eyes open for that.23:03
