leftyfbnoarb: you asked this same question 6 months ago. Veracrypt is not officially supported on ubuntu01:31
noarbleftyfb: sorry about that, I don't remember getting a specific answer. Is there another tool other than veracrypt that is officially supported?01:33
arraybolt3noarb: LUKS.01:34
arraybolt3Oh wait, I see your question, hold on...01:34
noarbWhat about without encryption? Is there a filesystem with symlinks like I described?01:35
noarbWhether veracrypt is officially supported or not, it does encrypt the block device and works just fine across the OSes. I just don't know about a fs that supports symlinks on both01:36
arraybolt3noarb: Does the Mac have to support the fs natively?01:37
arraybolt3If so, you may be out of luck. If not, https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/29842/how-can-i-mount-an-ext4-file-system-on-os-x01:38
arraybolt3Then just use ext4.01:38
arraybolt3Or you could shell out an arm and a leg for an NTFS drive for macOS and then have compatibility with Windows too, then just use NTFS.01:41
arraybolt3I don't know if Paragon's NTFS driver will support symlinks though.01:42

ted-iousIs there one weird trick to get the installer to let me mount the partition I want instead of it insisting on doing it?12:39
ted-iousIt is convinced that my custom made ext4 partition is ext2 so when it tries to mount it it fails and won't let me proceed.12:40
ted-iousI thought there used to be a way to get advanced options in the installer so you could do useful things like change the reserved % and turn off the journal but maybe that was a different distro.12:41
nteodosioted-ious, if you want to mount a partition I think you can always drop to a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+t).12:43
ted-iousBut where do I mount it so the installer will let me go ahead?12:44
ted-iousI have a root terminal and I formatted the partition with the ext4 options I want but the installer won't proceed unless I let it do the formatting.12:45
ted-iousOtherwise I think it tries to mount my ext4 partition as ext2 which fails.12:45
nteodosioIsn't there a checkbox to disable formatting in the advanced partiotining?12:46
oerheksconvinced that my custom made ext4 partition is ext2??12:46
ted-iousYes but if I do that it fails to mount.12:46
ted-iousoerheks: Exactly.12:47
ted-iousI tried making the partition with parted and telling it it was ext4 but that doesn't actually get saved to the disk.12:47
ted-iousThe next time you run it it thinks it's ext2 again.12:47
oerheksfix that first, so you don' t have to weird tricks12:48

oerheksuse the disks tool in the gui12:49

ted-iousLike fsck.ext4?12:52
ted-iousBut it's a brand new filesystm so there's nothing that needs repairing.12:53

magnus1hey! I have a weird problem with one of my ubuntu (18.04) servers. It's a quite powerful server (80 cpu cores, 380+ GB of RAM) and is usually very performant. However, sometimes it will go into a weird state where everything is _superslow_. It takes forever to perform simplest tasks, like run "apt install" (takes several minutes to install a tiny package). It remains in this state until I perform a12:55
magnus1reboot. I see no CPU load, everything is idle. There is plenty of RAM available (hundreds of gigabytes). I have found that writing to the disk is _extremely_ slow. If I run "dd if=/dev/zero of=/big.file bs=1024M count=10", i can see the file growing by KILObytes per second. Reading using hdparm -Tt however is just fine. So I'm looking for ways to determine what is the root cause of slow I/O on my12:55
magnus1ubuntu server. Any ideas?12:55
magnus1There are no error messages (like bad I/O etc) in the kernel log or syslog, in fact there are no errors at all. If I check the iDRAC interface (remote server interface), the everything in the system is healthy including the RAID array12:55

magnus1ted-ious: i dont have physical access to the server right now, but i'll for sure check this out next time i visit the datacenter13:00
magnus1ted-ious: if they are flashing like crazy, what does that indicate? there is basically no I/O operation in the system ongoing13:01
ted-iousBefore you do that you should find out how to get smart data and maybe even performance information on each drive.13:02
ted-iousWell if they're not flashing much at all that would at least let you know that the drives aren't busy.13:02
ted-iousThat could be because one or more drives are trying to relocate bad sectors which can make the drive appear "busy" to the raid controller.13:03
=== Liowenex_ is now known as Liowenex
ted-iousOr one or more drives could be running a soft reset over and over for some reason.13:03
ted-iousThere are a bunch of possible reasons that a drive might act very slowly.13:04
ted-iousUnfortunately a hardware raid controller is going to hide most of them from you unless you have a way of getting data out of it.13:04
magnus1yeah, but it's fine after reboot and can keep performing excellent for a month or even more until it happens again13:04
ted-iousSome dell servers will turn the green led orange on the front panel display if they are misbehaving.13:05

ograif you tust it ...15:26
ogra*trust15:27
oerheksi like snaps.15:27
pickanickSometimes it seems like technology is progressing inexorably towards unreliability15:28
ograpickanick, well, progress in software means introducing new bugs too ... you have just hit one and that is obviously already fixed, it has just not run through the whole QA cycle yet to be n a stable release channel (but you can use it from other channels)15:35
oerheksfall back to firefox ESR then..15:37
pickanickESR by what means?15:37
oerheksstable.15:39
pickanickum, I'm kinda new around these parts, although I'm old enough to remember when help popped up at the press of a key. Is stable a snap or with apt?15:41
pickanickYou don't mean PPA, so not this https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2022/03/install-firefox-esr-ubuntu/15:42
pickanickAh I've found a workaround by copying the help files into my home directory and clicking around until all the needed CSS gets loaded.  Still it would be nice to know how to use ESR15:45
pickanickCSS = {CSS, Javascript, ???}15:46
pickanickor is the PPA a recommended option for ESR?15:49
esvhello folks, is there an easy way to copy the apparmor attributes of one directory to another ?15:58
tomreynpickanick: https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/ubuntu/ppa provides firefox and firefox-esr debs for multiple ubuntu releases16:03
esvfound something16:04
tomreynpickanick: the recommended option is the snap package16:06
ograthere is an esr snap channel FWIW16:07
ogra$ snap info firefox|grep esr/stable16:08
ogra  esr/stable:       102.5.0esr-1 2022-11-15 (2077) 183MB -16:08
ogra(and as with all snaps you can install the normal firefox snap and one from the esr channel in prallel)16:09
leftyfbogra: does that still have the help page bug? :)16:09
ograthe help page bug is a big in snapd apparently 🙂16:09

jysdHi I have an issue with my efi partition. update-initramfs is failing every time with "no space left on device /boot/efi" and I also get a notification that efi is full with only 1kB disk space remaining. I've checked over and over, du -sh /boot/efi says only 188M when the full dev/sda1 partition it's mounted on is 500+Mb. Everybody else who has17:22
jysdthis problem just seems to actually have a full efi partition. Why would my system think it's full at only 200M?17:22
jhutchinsjysd: What is it that reports 500+MB?17:26
jysdjhutchins: The gnome disk tool says the the size of the mounted /dev/sda1 efi partition is 536MB17:27
alkisgjysd: (sudo lsblk --fs; df -h ) | nc termbin.com 999917:29
jhutchinsjysd: I would trust the console tools far more than a GUI wrapper.17:32
jhutchinsYou should be able to explore the partition by using du to find out where the space is being used.  (I usually use du -sh)17:33
jhutchinsjysd: How many kernels do you have installed?17:33
bougyman`durep` does an excellent job of aggregating that in an easy to view way17:33
leftyfbncdu17:33
bougymanit's like a recursive du -sch17:33
jhutchinsPlenty of options.17:33
jysdI've got an old ubuntu install, windows and refind in /boot/efi/EFI17:36
jysdBut yeah exploring with du just reports a total of 188M17:37
jhutchinsjysd: The capacity is for the whole partition, not a sub-directory.  I asked about the number of kernels because accumulated kernel files are frequently what fills up a /boot partition.17:39
jhutchinsTools that only show you the space you want to see aren't much use here, you need to see how much space is actually there, and what's taking up that space.17:40
jhutchinsjysd: Where is /dev/sda1 mounted?17:41
jhutchins(I sure hope you're running these tools as root.)17:42
jysdYes all as root, parted --list shows the boot flagged partition as being 536MB and fdisk -l /dev/sda1 says 511MiB17:47
jhutchinsjysd: So you have the space, but you still need to figure out what's using it up.17:48
jhutchinsSo far you appear to have found only 188M, there's more out there.17:48
jysdIs there some safe way I can remove and reinstall the current kernel, the kernel that it's trying to install every time is 6.0.6-76060006-generic which the exact one returned by uname -r which seems pretty weird17:55
grbrigstedHi. After a recent kernel update, the displays on my Thunderbolt dock stopped working. Keyboard and mouse is still working. If I boot into a previous kernel, they work again. Is there something I forgot to do?17:56
grbrigstedAnyone?18:04
pickanickgrbrigsted: I am not an expert, but perhaps the new kernel has a bug, and ... bah humbug18:07

sethamHello, I installed Ubuntu 22.04 on an old laptop, and when trying to use third party drivers I am having some probles with the secure boot18:32
sethamWhen I boot I got a tiny blue square that I think is the prompt to register the driver, but I cannot follow theinstructions18:33
leftyfbsetham: disable secure boot18:34
sethamYes, when I disable it it works, I just want to try/learn to fix the issue18:37
sethamUf it helps is a Sony VAio SVE14A290X with Intel® HD Graphics 40006 and an AMD Radeon HD 7550M18:37
sethamThanks in advance for any help18:38
grriz__dont think the iso will run with secure boot since the iso isnt signed. there are 3rd part tools, that act as a wrapper / loader, that will append a cert to the is.18:47
grriz__*iso18:48
leftyfbgrriz__: that is not true18:49
grriz__hmm,18:49
oerheksgrriz__, his issue is the drivers not signed,18:49
grriz__ah I see18:50
grriz__reading helps18:50
grriz__so they get passed the initial boot, and is add ing in the drivers.18:52
grriz__thought they were stuck trying to get the iso to load..18:52
setham@grriz__ I already installed and configured Ubuntu, and it is working without issues, with Secure Boot disable18:56
grriz__gotcha, grats18:56
sethamBut for the sake of learning, I am trying to make it work with the Secure Boot ON18:56
sethamBut when I boot, I get, sometimes, a tiny blue square in the left corner18:57
grriz__understood18:57
sethamwhich I am sure is prompt to register the drivers withthe password I already entered18:58
sethamSo I am asking if there s a way to address this, a workaround I can use18:59
sethamI never get the full blue screen after booting or any menu, just straight to booting18:59
grriz__geez,19:00
sethamI verified that is booting with the shim partition, and added a delay of 10 seconds just in case19:00
grriz__yeah I havent ran into that issue. currently trying to solve a wifi driver issue myself.19:01
sethamThanks. i will stay around for a bit in case someone has had this issue.19:02
grriz__sorry, i gots no real work around. ive been trying to force drivers to install via modporbe19:02
sethamI found this workaround :19:02
sethamManual method19:02
sethamYou may also opt to sign modules yourself. To make this simple, you can use the command:19:02
sethamsudo update-secureboot-policy --new-key19:02
sethamTo create a new MOK key to use for signing, then run the appropriate kmodsign command to sign your kernel module. After the module is signed, run sudo update-secureboot-policy --enroll-key to step through the enrollment wizard, or do the enrollment yourself by running sudo mokutil --import <your key>19:02
grriz__possibly doing it all wrong lol.19:02
sethamBut before trying this I will see. Something I am going to do tonight is to connect it to an external monitor, to see if it makes a difference19:03
grriz__ah ok,19:04
jhutchinsLet's create a barrier to using your own computer, then find ways to get around the barrier.19:04
grriz__cool.19:04
