ilvipero> <@gz1:matrix.org> Hi Guys,... (full message at <https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/libera.chat/c1087ede8a7d59496cfdeaf72eabd160da2865b4>)16:43
gz1[m]> <@ilvipero:matrix.org> I would avoid mixing desktop environments. That is a lot of work, it pulls dependencies, and creates issues here and there you really do not need.... (full message at <https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/libera.chat/adfe0b4639dfa91d0619e71bc701d877fa0846a2>)17:00
gz1[m]ilvipero do you know how to make the task manager icons small like in ubuntu studio?17:01
gz1[m]I can't find anywhere where to do this17:01
gz1[m]- Does having Debian Stable or Kubuntu for server make much difference? I noticed some things are debian specific. I prefer to learn ubuntu and nothing else.17:06
gz1[m]Is kubuntu for servers stable enough?17:06
ilvipero> <@gz1:matrix.org> - Does having Debian Stable or Kubuntu for server make much difference? I noticed some things are debian specific. I prefer to learn ubuntu and nothing else.17:07
ilvipero> 17:07
ilvipero> Is kubuntu for servers stable enough?17:07
ilviperofor a server, you can download Ubuntu Server. it does not come with a GUI. smaller and lighter. If you need a GUI on your server, sure you can use Kubuntu, in that case I recommend you stick to LTS and do not enable any additional repositories or PPAs. 17:07
ilvipero<gz1[m]> "ilvipero do you know how to make..." <- I believe it is a widget you can put on your panel. 17:08
gz1[m]<ilvipero> "> <@gz1:matrix.org> - Does..." <- Noted!17:16
gz1[m]I prefer ubuntu server without GUI.17:16
gz1[m]All professional servers including FreeBSD are all used almost without GUI.17:16
gz1[m]Anyhow i am not sure you have experience 1st hand experience on this. But Ubuntu Server is stable enough right?17:20
gz1[m]Maybe not rock stable as debian stable for for most use case scenarios is enough?17:20
arraybolt3[m]> <@gz1:matrix.org> Anyhow i am not sure you have experience 1st hand experience on this. But Ubuntu Server is stable enough right?17:21
arraybolt3[m]> 17:21
arraybolt3[m]> Maybe not rock stable as debian stable for for most use case scenarios is enough?17:21
arraybolt3[m]Ubuntu Server should be every bit as stable as Debian for servers, as far as I am aware.17:21
arraybolt3[m]And considering that it's one of the most (if not the most) popular server operating systems worldwide, yeah, I'd say it's good enough for most use case scenarios.17:23
gz1[m]arraybolt3[m]: I have the same impression yeah.17:25
gz1[m]arraybolt3[m]: Yes. For me using the knowledge i will obtain from ubuntu desktop and being able to apply it on the server is the best for me!17:27
gz1[m]There are things, maybe even command related that are debian specific?17:27
gz1[m]Am i right, or it's exactly the same as ubuntu?17:27
arraybolt3[m]There are a few things that are different between Debian and Ubuntu in actual use (mainly Snaps being present in Ubuntu by default, and absent in Debian by default), but for most of your work, Debian and Ubuntu will feel almost identical.17:29
arraybolt3[m]They use the same package manager, and run most of the same software. Ubuntu *might* be compatible with more hardware, and the installation systems are dramatically different, but they should mostly "feel" the same. (Do note that Debian and Ubuntu are not close enough to be considered identical, and support channels for one generally won't help with the other. They're close, but not identical.)17:31
gz1[m]s/Maybe not rock stable as debian stable for for most use case scenarios is enough?/Maybe not rock stable as debian stable, but for most use case scenarios is enough?/17:31
gz1[m]arraybolt3[m]: Exactly!17:32
gz1[m]i installed debian stable free firmware 2 days ago and sound did not work17:32
gz1[m]i did not want to fix these things as they should work out of the box like with kubuntu17:33
gz1[m]ofc i could have installed debian stable non free firmware, but my impression, specially for web development is that ubuntu is more universal and supports more software17:33
gz1[m]debian mainly supporting free open source means more secure, but ubuntu is still good enough if we are carefull17:34
arraybolt3[m]Worthy of note, "open-source" does not necessarily equal "more secure", and "closed-source" does not necessarily equal "less secure".17:34
gz1[m]True!17:35
gz1[m]It just emans access to the source code :)17:35
gz1[m]s/emans/means/17:35
gz1[m]but who has time to read it...17:35
arraybolt3[m]I guess Ubuntu might be better for some types of development due to there being more support for it, but I see no reason why Debian wouldn't work for that. Really, it's a matter of preference. Both will work for a desktop or server, which one you use depends on which one you end up liking more.17:35
gz1[m]anyway with my linux journey so far and having tried manjaro, endeavour os, debian and kubuntu.17:36
gz1[m]Kubuntu is universal. Even for advanced users! Arch is too much maintenance.17:36
arraybolt3[m](That's how it is with most distros... though personally I wouldn't use Arch on a server since I'm not that brave :P)17:36
gz1[m]arraybolt3[m]: i can give debian stable non free firmware a go later in the future. But for now kubuntu will be main OS.17:37
gz1[m]Plus i did not like the old looking software that debian had.17:37
gz1[m]Ubuntu is more up to date!17:37
gz1[m]arraybolt3[m]: it's not that hard to be honest!17:38
gz1[m]it's just too much time for maintaining and fixing17:38
gz1[m]Has anyone been able to make ksuperkey function properly (to solve this problem)?22:17
gz1[m]When using VirtualBox VM guests, the Super/Windows key input always goes to the KDE host, even when the guest has focus.22:17
