aaronprisk[m]<arraybolt3[m]> "aaronprisk: I reinstalled my..." <- Sure can. Same email address?01:18
arraybolt3[m]Yes please.01:19
arraybolt3[m]👍️ Thank you!01:21
aaronprisk[m]Eickmeyer: In the Discourse discussion over the Ubuntu Adwaita Remix, you mentioned the the category being for official flavor discussion only. Should we consider adding a Category for Remixes or Flavors that haven't been granted official status yet?03:07
Eickmeyer[m]aaronprisk: Honestly, it hasn't been much of an issue. The category does say that, but the rules have been lax on that front. However, my issue with the current discussion is that it seems that the Adwaita Remix didn't seem to have any solid plans or intentions, so my intention was to get them to think that through more than anything. In the past, the proposed flavors, including Cinnamon and Unity, have had official flavor03:13
Eickmeyer[m]status in mind, but this Adwaita Remix hadn't completely thought that through, which, with my moderator hat on, gave me pause but also, with my flavor lead at on, gave them tips on how to proceed assuming they wanted to go that route.03:13
aaronprisk[m]Eickmeyer[m]: Alright, that make sense. They definitely have the right enthusiasm, it just needs to be coupled with some good planning now.03:15
Eickmeyer[m]<aaronprisk[m]> "Alright, that make sense. They..." <- Oh for sure. They definitely didn't have a plan, which, from my perspective, was a cause for some (albeit slight) concern. I think they saw my post through the media attention it got and thought, "Oh, so this is where I can post about my idea to get some attention" and just did it (I'm not assuming any bad faith here at all). Unfortunately, it was probably inappropriate03:21
Eickmeyer[m]for them to so so without a clear plan, but that's neither here nor there as I'm willing to use it as a guiding moment to get them to where they need to be for their own planning. However, I'm not sure if that thread is an appropriate place to continue the discussion if they decide they'd rather remain a remix in lieu of pursuing the official flavor route.03:21
arraybolt3[m]I don't know if this is something that is even worth considering, but it seems to me like this remix might not be something that should ever be intended to be an official flavor without a lot more... difference... from Ubuntu Desktop in it.03:24
arraybolt3[m]Every existing Ubuntu Flavor and soon-to-be official flavor that I see either has a dramatically different desktop than the others (L/X/K/Ubuntu [Unity/MATE/Budgie/Cinnamon]), or has a very particular use case in mind that is difficult to customize for without extensive knowledge (Ubuntu Studio/Edubuntu).03:24
arraybolt3[m]Ubuntu Adwaita Remix isn't that. It's still GNOME desktop, but with a different theme applied. I mean, cool, that's possibly useful, and I think if that's what they want to do, more power to them. But is it really different enough from Ubuntu Desktop to qualify as a whole flavor? We probably wouldn't accept a new flavor that was just Ubuntu Desktop with Minetest preinstalled, right?03:24
arraybolt3[m]Anyway, just something I noticed skimming the thread just now.03:24
arraybolt3[m] * I don't know if my input is worth anything here, but it seems to me like this remix might not be something that should ever be intended to be an official flavor without a lot more... difference... from Ubuntu Desktop in it.03:25

arraybolt3[m]True. But it might be something to bring up in discussions about how to become an official flavor, in the event it's not already documented clearly somewhere.03:26
arraybolt3[m]The last thing a prospective flavor developer needs is to do all of the requirements to become a flavor and then be told, "Sorry, your flavor isn't sufficiently different enough from existing flavors to count." Just what qualifies as "different enough?" True, none of us make those decisions, but still, might be good to have that documented somewhere.03:28
arraybolt3[m]* documented somewhere. (If the Technical Board makes a decision about that, that is, which maybe I or someone else could bring up to them if that doesn't sound like a horrible idea.)03:28
Eickmeyer[m]arraybolt3[m]: I, for one, don't want to be that level of gatekeeper unless I were on the technical board. The thing I'd do is get on that thread and encourage them to approach the technical board (an email) and ask if this would be something that would be considered to become an official flavor, just so they wouldn't be wasting their time. That way you're not "heading them off at the pass" by trying to get a policy03:32
Eickmeyer[m]established, but letting the TB come to their own conclusion.03:32
arraybolt3[m]Eickmeyer[m]: I like it, that seems like a good way of getting an established line to be drawn without it looking like one of us is actively fighting against them.03:33
arraybolt3[m]s/established//03:33
arraybolt3[m]s/an/a/, s/established//03:34
Eickmeyer[m]arraybolt3[m]: Exactly. I don't want to discourage them at all; I love the enthusiasm!03:34
arraybolt3[m]Plus, even if their current plans aren't sufficient to become an official flavor, there's nothing saying they can't further their plans to make themselves official-flavor-worthy. Having them go to the TB would help them to further the project, rather than pressing an "off" button.03:36
aaronprisk[m]I concur. Providing them with general guidance and support is the best thing we can do. If there is an influx of questions about specific flavor requirements, the technical board can advise and we can ensure anything they publish is readily available. 03:37
Eickmeyer[m]aaronprisk[m]: That's exactly what I've been doing, but also, I helped write one of the documents so.... :)03:38
arraybolt3[m](Sorry for being less-than-enthusiastic in my first comment - I may think that standard GNOME is absolutely horrible :P)03:38
arraybolt3[m](I know many people think GNOME is awesome, I'm just... not one of them. But I shouldn't let that get in the way of trying to be good for the Ubuntu community.)03:39
Eickmeyer[m]Awesome is a window manager. 🤣03:40
arraybolt3[m]Oh good grief no. Give me standard GNOME then.03:41
aaronprisk[m]There you go! Another flavor idea03:42
arraybolt3[m](weird thing is I actually like IceWM, maybe I'm just a bit too close to my Windows days for Awesome to look awesome?)03:42
Eickmeyer[m]aaronprisk[m]: A few years ago, Simon Quigley and I came up with this: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-tiling03:43
Eickmeyer[m]We've never done anything with it.03:43
arraybolt3[m]I'm sure there's hordes of users who would love you for that. Just keep it far far away from me, kthxbye03:44
Eickmeyer[m]We were also completely joking around.03:44
arraybolt3[m](The idea of a tiling WM isn't actually that bad, and some of them look cool, it's just not something I think I personally would enjoy using.)03:45
aaronprisk[m]It would certainly be a niche flavor. To their credit, tiling WM users are very passionate about them.03:49
oerhekslong time no read from tomreyn, dec 28 last message...18:59
Eickmeyer[m]aaronprisk: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-teams/33113 missing Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Budgie.23:20
Eickmeyer[m]oerheks: That is concerning. Might be on vacation?23:20
Eickmeyer[m]er... holiday?23:20
Bashing-omaaronprisk[m]: ^^ Also have the thought to run the article in UWN.23:28
aaronprisk[m]<Eickmeyer[m]> "aaronprisk: https://discourse...." <- Do you happen to have links to their respected teams? I pulled that info largely from the Wiki which seems to be pretty dated.23:30
aaronprisk[m]Bashing-om: That would be great!23:30
