habys | Is anyone able to run `apt -y dist-upgrade` on the target with the live server iso? I get an error but don't have any detail of what's going wrong | 15:47 |

tetrapod | Hello! I've recently been forced to move to ubuntu and I'm a bit out of my depth now. | 18:53 |
tetrapod | Why would I want to install docker from the docker.com repo, instead of using docker.io? | 18:53 |
tetrapod | *the package | 18:53 |
tetrapod | What's the ubuntu way of installing docker? | 18:54 |
habys | if you add the docker repo to your system you can update docker with apt. | 19:20 |
tetrapod | So the ubuntu-maintained one isn't up-to-date? | 19:39 |
habys | since you mentioned docker.io, I read that as whats the difference between adding this custom repo and downloading a binary from docker.io. | 20:25 |
tetrapod | No, i meant the 'docker.io' ubuntu package (meta-package probably). | 22:02 |
tetrapod | I did figure some things out in the meantime. Looks like docker.io (as packaged by ubuntu) relies a lot more on dependencies, whereas the docker.com version includes most depedencies statically (like a go binary). So docker.com has a (probably) slightly more stable statically linked package at the cost of size and possibly security updates. | 22:06 |
tetrapod | The more you know | 22:06 |
sdeziel | tetrapod: docker.io comes 'universe' so it only receives community support in Ubuntu. I wouldn't rely on it personally. I'd use docker.com's apt repo | 22:18 |
sdeziel | s/comes/comes from/ | 22:21 |
sdeziel | that said, someone is working on refreshing docker in ubuntu's archive, see LP: #1996909 | 22:25 |

rbasak | sdeziel: currently the docker.io package is being regularly updated by a member of the Canonical Server Team. So in practice it's receiving more than what you might expect from a universe package. | 23:15 |
