tetrapodHello! I've recently been forced to move to ubuntu and I'm a bit out of my depth now. 18:53
tetrapodWhy would I want to install docker from the docker.com repo, instead of using docker.io? 18:53
tetrapod*the package 18:53
tetrapodWhat's the ubuntu way of installing docker? 18:54
habysif you add the docker repo to your system you can update docker with apt.19:20
tetrapodSo the ubuntu-maintained one isn't up-to-date? 19:39
habyssince you mentioned docker.io, I read that as whats the difference between adding this custom repo and downloading a binary from docker.io.20:25
tetrapodNo, i meant the 'docker.io' ubuntu package (meta-package probably). 22:02
tetrapodI did figure some things out in the meantime. Looks like docker.io (as packaged by ubuntu) relies a lot more on dependencies, whereas the docker.com version includes most depedencies statically (like a go binary). So docker.com has a (probably) slightly more stable statically linked package at the cost of size and possibly security updates. 22:06
tetrapodThe more you know22:06
sdezieltetrapod: docker.io comes 'universe' so it only receives community support in Ubuntu. I wouldn't rely on it personally. I'd use docker.com's apt repo22:18

sdezielthat said, someone is working on refreshing docker in ubuntu's archive, see LP: #199690922:25

rbasaksdeziel: currently the docker.io package is being regularly updated by a member of the Canonical Server Team. So in practice it's receiving more than what you might expect from a universe package.23:15
