[10:19] they told me it delivers security fixes to packages that haven't seen any in many years... [10:20] but to get them i need to get one of those keys (5 are free for individuals and 100 for community members) [10:20] one of the packages is imagemagick-6-common [10:22] i'm not entirely convinced about this approach tbh, but it is what it is i guess.. and there's always the option to migrate. :) [10:23] i had that imagemagick issue too, yesterday [10:23] these packages were held back; software-properties-gtk update-notifier update-notifier-common python3-software-properties software-properties-common [10:24] after that, and a reboot, i got this new screen, and could enable aps https://imgur.com/gallery/JrSO8zh .. and the imagemagick packages could be updated. [10:25] were you able to that without a ID key oerheks ? [10:26] i don't mind having to configure stuff, but i can see why people would get upset to have a their package list tied to an identifier... [10:29] no, i have the ID enabled, for livepatch, not for ESM 10 year support [10:29] where do i find that window in KDE? [10:30] i found the window, but i don't have the tab... [10:30] oh, this is gnome [10:31] never mind, i know how to do it in cli... was just curious [10:31] I'm not super happy about this change tbh 😅 And the lingo on the website made it really hard to find the free tier. Not to mention that the unfree tier are way beyond my budget :D [10:33] i mean gratis tier, as in "free beer". [11:30] Good Morning, Afternoon, Evening. [15:32] I had a very simple question, how do I enable the wireless card on my MacBook pro. On Linux mint I just go to the driver section and then enable it but I can't find an equivalent here on Ubuntu studio. [15:34] legrandtech[m]: Macbook pro needs a special driver. Go to System Settings > Hardware Drivers (or something to that effect, don't have that system on right now). [15:36] sakrecoer[bpist]: Nothing has changed. Apparently, it's a new place you can enable that allows those packages to be updated, but it costs money to pay people to update those packages. Free for up to 5 machines, up to 50 for Ubuntu members. You can remove the message by removing 'ubuntu-advantage-tools'. [15:36] oerheks: ^ [15:37] Reason: Python 2 packages are EOL and full of security holes, so they're not updated (nor in the repository for 22.04 anyhow). [15:39] "legrandtech: Macbook pro needs a..." <- I don't have Hardware Drivers as an option. Maybe I'll try reinstalling the OS [15:40] legrandtech[m]: That doesn't seem right. I don't have the exact name. Look in the column on the left, there should be something that says drivers. [15:41] legrandtech[m]: you can find them with muon. [15:42] legrandtech[m]: muon ->settings->configure software sources [15:42] a window pops up look in the aditional drivers tab [15:43] legrandtech: System Settings > Driver Manager is what I meant [15:43] Genius [15:43] Muon has it, testing now [15:43] * Eickmeyer[m] uploaded an image: (7KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/DwAfMqWfnJiBxEfcmYNpaKei/clipboard.png > [15:43] I am sure I have seen it in the settings ap as well but I can never find it when I want it. [15:44] OvenWerks: You're going to have to stop pointing people to Muon, it's going to be removed from future releases. [15:44] Looking for it the other way too [15:44] :P bad news as there is nothing worth while to replace it yet [15:44] That said, Additional drivers will be available directly in the menu in future releases. [15:45] We'll have to seed Synaptic again. [15:46] Eickmeyer[m]: Driver Manager is not available, I found the other manually. [15:46] synaptic has the same-ish menu [15:46] legrandtech: That's not right then. What version are you on? [15:46] * Driver Manager is not available, I found the other settings manually. [15:47] Ubuntu Studio 22.04 [15:48] Looks like I have a couple things to look at. Ran into a couple of bug reports this morning. >_< [15:50] * legrandtech[m] uploaded an image: (106KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/vLCMpQmDgJKmmMwFlilXwpwz/PXL_20230207_154856673.jpg > [15:50] * legrandtech[m] uploaded an image: (87KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/LiPPzUhbGAicUdHZmyRaZVtN/PXL_20230207_154848717.jpg > [15:50] Okay, this is what shows for me. [15:50] legrandtech: NOOOO, the system settings application, not the menu. [15:50] Think control panel. [15:57] "legrandtech: NOOOO, the system..." <- Got it, it took me the same route as Muon but much faster, thanks. I now ran into another issue where it says this device is not working. [15:57] * legrandtech[m] uploaded an image: (135KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/fPIYElcCYNfPDprcZjgTEsnP/PXL_20230207_155700112.jpg > [15:57] You need to reboot after the driver has been installed. [15:58] Okay [16:17] Something's not right because I switched to it under muon and I tapped apply changes but could not tap restart from the button so I restarted manually. I tried it again from the settings menu the do not use device was highlighted, now apply changes is greyed out. Maybe a fresh OS setup will get this fixed? [16:23] Are you saying you just can't restart? [16:23] (a fresh install isn't always the answer) [16:26] I was able to restart manually but after the restart the WiFi radio was not enabled. I then followed the way you showed me and saw that the Wi-Fi card was not selected. I selected the Wi-Fi card but now I do not get the option to apply changes. That button is now greyed out. [16:27] That's because the driver is already installed. [16:28] * Eickmeyer[m] has to go afk [16:28] !morehelp | legrandtech, append :libera.chat to these to find other places for help, this isn't your only option: [16:28] legrandtech, append :libera.chat to these to find other places for help, this isn't your only option:: #ubuntustudio sometimes cannot answer your questions in a timely matter, or simply lacks the capacity. For additional sources of help, try #ubuntu if your issue is of a technical nature, or #lau (Linux Audio Users) or #opensourcemusicians if it has to do with the audio stack. [16:29] So it's normal for the additional drivers menu to revert back to not use the device? [16:29] * legrandtech[m] uploaded an image: (131KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/EzvkgFSKHkkigHITIcUWYElH/PXL_20230207_162817199.jpg > [16:29] No, that's not normal. Seek help in #ubuntu:libera.chat for now. [16:30] * Eickmeyer[m] afk [16:30] Okay, thanks. [16:40] "Settoshi (UTC+1): Nothing has..." <- i realize it's the narrative canonical gas chosen, but i really wouldn't say "nothing has changed" that is going to trigger a lot of foss people. especially the pedantic ones. but as i said, not much i can do about it except migrate. [16:55] "i realize it's the narrative..." <- FOSS doesn't mean "free as in beer" so their argument is invalid. [16:55] i would go for owning it instead: "yes we have made fundamental changes to our monetization strategy: beyond 5 personal devices you are considered an enterprise. unless you go through the process of becoming a community member" [16:55] that might actually bring more members [16:57] I mean, the packages listed weren't even in 22.04 to begin with, tbh. [16:57] Eickmeyer[m]: i never said it does and it's not the issue i am raising [16:59] I believe there's a whole discussion about this on discourse.ubuntu.com [16:59] i think the way this change is comunicated is very flawed and i think what will happen is a surge in fake launchpad accounts [17:01] Settoshi (UTC+1): I stand corrected, there's a bug report about the messaging: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-advantage-tools/+bug/1992026 [17:01] -ubottu:#ubuntustudio- Launchpad bug 1992026 in ubuntu-advantage-tools (Ubuntu) "Ubuntu Pro APT integration is a bit much" [Critical, In Progress] [17:02] And it has the Community Council's attention, at least teward's attention. [17:37] That's great news! \o/ i'm relieved. there was such a big discrepancy between the UX and the actual change (which, is a debatable change in many ways, but in reality not really suited for this channel) [17:39] Right. I don't like the messaging either. It's heavy-handed and a scare tactic. Goes completely against the philosophy of "Ubuntu", so if it doesn't change soon, I'm taking it up with the CC. [17:46] many people use Linux to remain somewhat anonymous. I can not see how any such idea can remain that way and count number of machines at the same time. [19:14] my attention is not hte CC's attention [19:14] but I get to weigh in with my CC hat [19:14] *smacks Eickmeyer[m] from here to /dev/null and back for pinging him* [19:23] (Not to mention the fact that some users don't even have an email address and without one, you can't sign up for Ubuntu One, and therefore Ubuntu Pro at all.) [19:44] Joke's on him, /dev/null isn't that far. [19:47] lol
