Are there any MATE specific testing announcements or resources you'd like us to include in our postings? [18:39] Yeah, the gtk3 libary MATE uses for things like File-Open dialogs is a bit buggy. I'd like to see you test trying to paste a file path into a file open dialog in pluma, or any other mate application. [18:40] It'll error out. [18:40] Because gsettings are no longer respected by gtk3 which MATE uses for org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser location-mode [18:41] It's impossible in MATE to have MATE applications open up with the filename entry bar showing to paste into. [18:41] Well, at least modern MATE. [18:41] Back before ~2015 gtk3 wasn't broken. [18:41] So MATE 1.8.2 is just fine. [18:42] While MATE 1.24.1 is broken. [18:43] I know that's not what you meant, and I'm not associated with Ubuntu MATE, but it's something MATE as a whole really needs to address. [18:44] Do you know if this issue is documented in a testing announcement or post anywhere? I didn't see any test cases in the MATE iso tracker: [18:44] http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/441/builds/272381/testcases [18:45] It was all over the gtk3 issue tracker for about 8 years. And mcclassen and the other devs just say it's frozen, gtkfilechooserwidget.c is too spaghetti and to use gtk4 where it's fixed. [18:46] I'm sure I sent it to ubuntu mate's bug tracker here some time... I'll find it. [18:47] https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/938 https://old.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/7579w0/gsettings_value_getting_overwritten_after_setting/ https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=788700 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/2985 [18:48] I think the Ubuntu MATE bug was closed wont-fix because it was a gtk3 issue. [18:48] But at this point it's clear GNOME wont-fix either so a workaround at the application level gtk would be nice. [18:49] It's really easy to replicate. Just get a filepath in your clipboard, open pluma, file->open and paste. [18:50] http://erewhon.superkuh.com/gtkfilechooserwidget-paste-fail.jpg [18:56] I see. Is this issue part of a greater Ubuntu MATE Testing Week post or just an isolated bug? I ask because we're looking to provide a single link in our post for each flavour's QA Announcement if they have one. [18:58] An isolated bug that effects MATE because MATE continues to use gtk3. This is a bug that GNOME developers, Ubuntu developers, and MATE developers have known about for almost 10 years but each says it's the other's responsibility to fix. [18:59] Since a MATE gtk4 port is not coming a per-MATE application level fix is needed. Like modifying pluma/nautilus/etc individually. [18:59] That could happen at the MATE level or the Ubuntu MATE level. [19:01] But if anyone can convince Ubuntu MATE maybe they can actually tackle fixing gtkfilechooserwidget.c in the ubuntu gtk3. But that'd be a kind of divergence from upstream very unlikely for a major lib. [19:02] Probably outside of the context of MATE Testing Week. But I take every chance I can to bring it up. [20:35] aaronprisk: afaik #ubuntu-mate has lost its official status some time ago, and the main devs are now on discord [20:35] alkisg: Got it. Thank you for the heads up. [20:35] 👍️
