Username__ | I'd like to use a GUI while remotely administrating my server, but I don't want to make my server vulnerable, or have it run while I'm not connected. Could you point me to a good resource on achieving this? | 04:09 |
lotuspsychje | !info cockpit | Username__ maybe | 04:12 |
ubottu | Username__ maybe: cockpit (277-1, kinetic): Web Console for Linux servers. In component universe, is optional. Built by cockpit. Size 20 kB / 72 kB | 04:12 |
lotuspsychje | running something remotely, would always be a risk for intruders | 04:13 |
lotuspsychje | better try to manage your servers cli | 04:13 |
lotuspsychje | maybe elaborate the kind of administration you need, and volunteers might advice you how to approach Username__ | 04:15 |
Username__ | I just installed cockpit, and that I can only access it over the local network with my long password seems pretty secure to me. (I'm no expert) I like all the features a great deal, but now I want to set up docker, and the guides I'm seeing are using GUIs. I probably don't need one, I'll do more research | 04:15 |
lotuspsychje | Username__: ssh remote management could be one way to administrate, but also needs a security thinkover so your server doesnt get hammered on ssh | 04:18 |
Username__ | If I set up ssh keys it should be good, since they're really long, right? I think I saw an option somewhere about that. | 04:19 |
lotuspsychje | !ssh | 04:20 |
ubottu | SSH is the Secure SHell protocol, see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH for client usage. PuTTY is an SSH client for Windows; see: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ for its homepage. See also !scp (Secure CoPy) and !sshd (Secure SHell Daemon) | 04:20 |
lotuspsychje | !security | 04:20 |
ubottu | Security Updates are dealt with here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Security - See also !root, !firewall, !server, and !usn | 04:20 |
lotuspsychje | setting up another port on ssh and use fail2ban can help the hammering | 04:21 |
lotuspsychje | !info fail2ban | 04:22 |
ubottu | fail2ban (0.11.2-6, kinetic): ban hosts that cause multiple authentication errors. In component universe, is optional. Built by fail2ban. Size 386 kB / 2,049 kB | 04:22 |
ravage | with ssh keys the hammering is really just annoying | 04:22 |
ravage | and fail2ban can reduce youe log spam here yes | 04:22 |
ravage | keep in mind it is a universe package | 04:22 |
Username__ | Great, I told UFW to let 9090 through for cockpit and ssh, and enabled it, and installed fail2ban, though I installed firewalld when I first turned on cockpit because cockpit suggested it, and uninstalled it when it blocked cockpit. Should I try to switch over to firewalld, or is there a way to get rid of the "Not running (Error) message from cockpit in regards to firewalld? | 04:33 |
JanC | if you use 'ufw', it can rate limit a port like 22, and then the hammering will be limited in practice... | 07:37 |
lotuspsychje | morning JanC | 07:40 |
JanC | o/ | 07:40 |
JanC | lots of people on the streets this morning! :) | 07:40 |
lotuspsychje | yeah indeed | 07:41 |
apxseemax | oh reconnection it is I guess | 10:47 |
