deegoif I run a script without a shebang, the whole system hangs for 5 minutes. happens on debian, ubuntu, everywhere (xfce).00:21
Tempterlol00:24
Temptermaybe its searching00:24
Tempterfor the right shell00:24
Tempterand you got a lot of blobs00:24
deegohow do we disable this feature?00:26
Tempterdeego: im trying find a way to just import the entire 'blob' that is Ubuntu into a python script so i can do w/e I want with it00:27
Tempterbut nobody has any straight answers lol00:27
Tempterwould be cool if you could just set properties on an object like disable certain shit00:27
Tempterlike this00:27
Tempterand then use the rest00:28
Tempterits absurd to me this doesnt exist in 202700:28
jhutchinsYou can't run DEC VMS in python either.  You're looking for something that can't happen, like a flying car with no wings or rotor.00:32
jhutchinsTempter: I have a feeling you've rejected the straight answers people have given you.  A better understanding of what system layers make up your platform would probably improve your code a LOT.00:33
Tempterjhutchins: yeah, but im a genius and an inventor, ill make it happen00:34
jhutchinsPython is mostly OS indepenent.  It runs on either Windows or Linux, but Linux doesn't run on Windows (not even WSL).00:34
jhutchinsdeego: You disable this by including the hashbang.  It's there for a reason.00:35
TempterI'm sick of hearing, 'we Linux doesnt run on Windows' or 'you cant import Linux functionality without WSL or installing the entire OS or using Docker'00:36
Tempterit's 2027 ffs, it's time someone recognize the problem and creates the bridge software that solves this problem once and for all00:36
Tempterwe have the technology00:37
ravageBack to the future we go00:37
jhutchinsTempter: Seriously, you need a better understanding of what an operating system is and what it does.  Operating systems are not written in Python.  Python requires an operating system to run on.00:38
Tempterjhutchins: yeah, im going to change that.00:38
ravageanyway. if you dont have an Ubuntu specific support question fee free to discuss in #ubuntu-discuss00:38
TempterI'll free you all00:38
Tempterfrom this hell00:38
jhutchinsYou can't run a bash shell on bare metal any more than you can run python on bare metal.00:38
TempterI don't care if I have to invest my own money, im gonna solve this00:40
Tempterim on it00:41
deegojhutchins: the entire system hanging for one missing shebang is not a feature00:42
jhutchinsdeego: What do you suppose the system is doing then?  What does your script NOT do when it doesn't have the right shell, but does just fine if it does have it?00:45

ograakik, that will just break your system for good ... "sudo apt purge snapd" is the correct thing to do12:15
akikogra: it's fixed with that already12:17
ograwhat is fixed ?12:17
akikogra: the lxd snap12:17
ograwell, you are breaking the whole system with pulling out files underneath existing metadata and systemd units ... just like you break it when removing a single .so file without removing the deb package12:18
akikornx: i fixed it already. nothing is broken12:18
ograyou can either purge snapd which removes all snaps and snap support, or sudo snap remove --purge lxd to remove a single snap12:19
ograjust randomly deleting files will cause breakge12:19

ograright, til the next snap auto-update kicks in or a fresh version of lxd is on the server12:20
ograanyway ... nothing to argue ...12:21
akikogra: do you have a comment on why the service file for snap.lxd.daemon is in /etc/systemd/system ?12:22
ograbecause it is generated12:22
akikogra: so it's the proper place and /lib/systemd/system is the wrong place?12:23
ograsystemd generators typucally only write to /etc ... along with this, if the unis would go into /lib UbuntuCore would have to have parts of /lib writable (it shares the core snap as rootfs with the snaps on server/desktop)12:23
ogra*typically12:24
akikhow are generators related to this?12:24
ograthey create the files12:24
akikcool12:24
ograand they typically do that in /etc/systemd/system12:24
akikso snap.lxd.daemon.service is generated by that generator?12:25
ogra(you'll likely find other generated files in there if you i.e. install a service that still uses sysv-init files)12:25
ograyes12:25
ogradaemon services and mount units for the squashfs files per-snap12:25
akikyea i found systemd-rc-local-generator. does that create the rc.local file?12:26
ograright12:26
akikbecause i didn't find rc.local in systemd github12:26
ograwell, it generates a service if that file was edited12:26
akikhere https://github.com/systemd/systemd/find/main12:26
ograyeah, thats a debian addition12:27
ograyou won't find it upstream12:27
akikit's on fedora and rhel too12:27
ogramust live in some debian packaging branch somewhere (not sure where that is hosted)12:27
ograright, its up to the distros to add it12:27
akikwell. it's run by the rc-local.service service12:27
ograwe just inherit it from debian12:27
akikwhich is part of systemd12:27

matsamanI forget why but there were all sorts of hoops to get that working last time I looked at it12:32
matsamanpython incompatibility or some other version incompatibility or something maybe12:32
ograELFrederich, if it is something that is depending on the gimp version (because it was added at a certain point only) it is likely the snapped gimp has it ... snaps are typically a lot newer than the deb versions12:33
ograi'd generally use the snap if you are after newer features in an app (particulary gime FWIW)12:34

ograah, not massively anymore apparently ... jammy released wit something like 2.8 but is on 2.10.30 now ... my snap is on 2.10.3212:38

octav1aHello, I've installed ubuntu 22.04 server, and x2go with LXDE. When I try to launch either firefox or chromium, I get the error " /user.slice/user-1000.slice/session-609.scope is not a snap cgroup "16:47
octav1ahow may I resolve this? Or how may I install the system package version instead of the snap version?16:48
ravageleftyfb: ok. you were right :)16:50

deltreeyI'm having trouble with my sound on 22.04.  I have searched a ton, and done a lot of work to get to this point, but I'm at a loss.  My sound card shows up just fine in the Desktop Manager, but the second I login, my soundcard can no longer be found by ubuntu.  I have checked, and the sound card is there under /proc/asound/cards but it doesn't show in the settings app in ubuntu at all.  Sound works in the terminal, but16:54
deltreeynowhere else16:54
deltreeymy volume keys work in the Desktop Manager as well, but stop working when I log in.  Again, this appears to be because ubuntu can't find my sound card.  I assume it's related to something my user is triggering on login, but I don't know what to even look for16:55

octav1aokay so apparently I'm new to the news on snaps that have taken over everything but as a long term power user it's very annoying. I have some ZFS volumes mounted under root like say at /data  ; Snap program cannot see them. I read that for some reason I can only grant access to snap to see /media and /mnt ? Okay, fine. So symlink doesn't work to get from /mnt/data4 to /data4, what method can I use?17:13
octav1aI'm about to just go and compile these programs myself17:13
deltreeylike, legit no output device https://imgur.com/a/tFC4YLi17:25
deltreeyand the sound card shows https://pastebin.com/D3AnmfMM17:28
ravageoctav1a: try a bind mount17:35

deltreeyjhutchins, well, doesn't look like it.  Trying that and rebooting, brb18:47
deltreeywell, usermod -aG audio <username> added the group, and even with a reboot, still no sound icon in the top panel, and no functioning audio keys, but still sound in the terminal (and weirdly with notifications)18:50
deltreeystill no output devices in sound settings18:51
deltreeyso when I backed-up my user directory and reinstalled, it worked.  At some point, I restored some part of my user directory (snap maybe?) that broke it18:52
deltreeynot super excited to reinstall again, but I may end up going there if I can't fix it18:55
octav1aravage:  thanks, that worked. This is still quite annoying though18:58
ravageYes it is18:58
jhutchinsoctav1a: The original idea behind snaps and flatpacks was that they would be completely isolated from the host OS so they could do no damage.18:59
jhutchinsKinda like the original container concept.18:59
octav1ajhutchins: I get that when using an optional package manager19:00
octav1aas a power user on a server OS, I would rather that the "apt" system package manager, NOT install snaps, though19:00
deltreeyis it possible permissions related?  Did I accidentally change the owner of some directory?  I don't know how the ubuntu settings app works, so I'm kinda at a loss for where to look next19:08

svm_invictvsWhy would I be unable to access my system settings?19:46
svm_invictvs(Upper right corner where the wifi, sound etc is. It try to open bluetooth settings and nothing happens.)19:46
svm_invictvsI suspect the existing instance of the settings app isn't working, but I would liek to know how to kill it and restart it.19:46
svm_invictvsSo far "gnome-control-panel" reads nothing19:47
ioriamaybe gnome-control-center; never heard of gnome-control-panel19:50

deltreeywell, progress has been made.  My settings app is now showing stuff.  I was able to do that by removing the config directory for pulse `rm -r ~/.config/pulse` thanks to a tip I found on a forum.  Still no sound, but the interface is responsive20:42
deltreeyI no longer have _any_ sound, terminal or otherwise, but the UI is lighting up when sounds are supposed to be happening from various sources20:44
deltreeyalsamixer, and pulseaudio volume control are showing sound working, my keyboard buttons are working....we're like 99% there, just lost sound altogether20:48
deltreeyfound here btw https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/wsgw52/no_sound_in_ubuntu_2204_after_upgrading_from_2004/21:02
deltreeyand after adding `options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0` to `/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf` I've got sound and microphone doing stuff21:03
jhutchinsoctav1a: Does Apt install snaps?  I thought you had to specificly request them (although the installer apparently does use snaps_).21:58
octav1aIt seems to on 22.04, hence my frustrations21:58
deltreeywell, I mean, apt installs flatpaks, so why not right?22:01
leftyfboctav1a: sorry, I'm just joining, which app are you having an issue with?22:01
