BardonHello, I'm trying to install unity hub, with those instructinos: https://docs.unity3d.com/hub/manual/InstallHub.html#install-hub-linux09:04
Bardonbut sudo apt update says "https://hub-dist.unity3d.com/artifactory/hub-debian-prod-local stable InRelease [...] NO_PUBKEY BE3E6EA534E8243F"09:04
Bardonwhereas I did add it..09:05
BardonWould anyone have an idea how to work this out?09:05
weedmicany chance you confused the private key with the public one.  these errors are usually (vague, but) true.09:05
oerhekssupport on their forum, as it is a commercial blob https://forum.unity.com/threads/how-to-install-unity-hub-3-4-1-in-ubuntu-22-04-lts.1311612/09:07

Bardonweedmic: Not sure, but I copy pasted the commands in the link I sent09:10
Bardonoerheks: All good, your link worked :). Thanks a lot09:19
oerheksBardon, have fun!09:21
BardonEhm, one last thing, the software complains that no usable version of libssl was found. I have libssl3:amd64 installed, and the link you provided says it needs libssl1.1. The guy manually installed it. Is libssl1.1 not available in the official repos?09:42
weedmicI may have a link for that, just checking09:42
oerheksavoid such software .. libssl1.1 ?09:44

* oerheks facepalms09:44
Bardonoerheks: Why? libssl1.1 is outdated?09:44
weedmicyes it is depricated aeons ago.09:45
Bardonweedmic: So the only solution is to install it manually?09:45
BardonOk well, why don't they update it.. I need this software for work though so I'll install it :s09:45
weedmicif you really need it, if you are enterprising, you can find all the calls to it and use symbolic links and fix it up, but... alas I was too lazy.  I needed it to setup safenet etoken.09:46
oerheksask on their forum ?09:46
weedmicit had security issues, they did update it, but... new versions have new numbers - some programmes don't just look for libssl, but a number.09:46
BardonSadly I have no time to fix their stuff :(09:47
weedmicsymbolic links are powerful.  you could fix it and share the link list with your vrienden09:47
BardonI'm just helping my brother install it for some internship, just not worth my time I think09:48
Bardoneven though a symlink shouldn't be too much work09:48
BardonHmm I can't even find libssl1.1 to install it manually09:58
BardonHow can I know which symlinks are needed?09:58
JanCBardon: using libssl1.1 is dangerous & outdated10:00
BardonBut I need to use unity for work10:01
BardonCan't they coexist with libssl3?10:01
oerheksbad for such commercial product10:01
JanCif unity3d really needs libssl1.1 I would suggest you drop it, because clearly the people who make it are incompetent10:02
JanCbut maybe your are just looking at some outdated information?10:02
JanCBardon: or maybe you should install an old version of Ubuntu, but you should wonder why they don't support newer versions then...10:04
Bardonidk I followed this doc https://docs.unity3d.com/hub/manual/InstallHub.html#install-hub-linux, which looks like the official doc and it didn't work. I had a key issue..10:05
JanCseems like Ubuntu 20.04 still had it10:05
Bardonanyway, I manually installed libssl1.1, now unity "works"... Anyway, it's for my brother's internship, which lasts a few months, it's really no big deal if it's half broken10:06
BardonThanks for your help :)10:06
JanCthe question is: how many more things will he learn wrong at a company like that...10:08
JanCnote that he will likely get into trouble the moment he needs support from Unity3D too, because he's using an unsupported OS...10:09
oerhekscompany is at risk now.10:09
JanCoerheks: to be fair, they likely were at risk already10:10
BardonWould it be safer to install ubuntu 20.04 and use it for unity?10:11
BardonOr would it be outdated the same way?10:11
JanCit would be easier to install it on 20.04 as it still had libssl1.1 for compatibility reasons, the potential security issues would likely be the same10:12
oerheksI'd say test that setup with pentesting tools like kali. sure that makes his internship interesting for that company.10:12
oerheksand add the log of our conversation*10:13
Bardonhaha that would be interesting, for sure!10:14
JanCbut the real problem here is that Unity3D is clearly not caring for linux users or security in general, or they would have switched to using libssl3 a long time ago...10:14
BardonExactly!10:14
BardonI need to go, bbye!10:14
BardonAnd thanks for teaching me a few things :)10:14
JanCmaybe they are going bankrupt or something, that they can't afford a developer part-time to care about such things...?10:15

weedmicsudo dpkg -i libssl1.1_1.1.1-1ubuntu2.1~18.04.21_amd64.deb10:53
weedmicBardon: many times devops get it to work once with an OS they don't know, like linux, and leave it etched in stone.  Runescape still requires 1.1 I believe.  To me, it is just irresponsible.  And, no one knows which symlinks to make, hence why "I" found the archive.10:57
weedmicoerheks: the company probably has a windows network and will always be at risk10:58
geirhaI'd install it with apt rather than dpkg -i; apt will install any dependencies10:58
weedmicI think that would fail geirha when using depricated items.  apt is "the way" (normally), but ad hoc, I think not.11:01

leftyfbpaul424: btw, sudo works the same on all linux distro's. Not just ubuntu.18:29
paul424I know, years ago I tried to configure sudoers file for Slackware and it was pain in the ass18:29
paul424The dangers of using Root ... blah blah.  .... BUT on both root and sudo you are a god and can do equal harm to the system if doing wrongly18:32
leftyfbpaul424: don't make a habit of typing sudo before every command. Especially when interacting in anything in your home directory or with ssh or anything involving GUI applications18:33
leftyfbpaul424: the only time a typical desktop user should be using sudo is with installing updates or new packages18:33
leftyfbpaul424: there's almost no reason to ever login as root directly18:34
paul424I know , but I am in the after installation - configure system period, where I have to do apt install or snap install18:34
paul424leftyfb, oki good to know18:34

jhutchinsAs an old school mainframe administrator, and a DOS power user, I prefer to become root to do general maintenance rather than having to type "sudo" for each step.20:35
jhutchinsMost of the modern Windows/Linux environments were done that way as well.20:36
jhutchinsI've never seen a pro system that required sudo per-task.20:36
sarnoldfeel free to use sudo -s20:37
jhutchins-i20:37
jhutchinsThat's fairly common.20:38
jhutchinsI do use su to become specific users from time to time.20:38
paul424When starting system I keep getting a window " a system program error has been detected. Should it be raised and send now ?" what's up ?20:57

eruditehermithi, I have a question about constant freezing/crashing. I suddenly started seeing constant freezing/crashing on my system. I backed everything up and reinstalled but I still see the crashes. When I use my system with software rendering. I don't experience crashes but it's obviously slow. The system is 8th gen intel 8550u with an intel iGPU. Same behvaiour with 22.04, 23.04. Do you have any advice on debugging. Memtest and badblocks are clean.21:51
eruditehermitIs this a hardware failure?21:52
jeremy31eruditehermit: Have you cleaned the computer lately?  Blown all the dust out?22:02
oerhekseruditehermit, if the bios gives overclock options, do not use them, and see what happens22:02
oerheksgive max mem to the igpu22:02
oerhekslook for bios updates ...22:03
eruditehermitjeremy31, oerheks the bios doesn't have any GPU options and there are no overclocks. It is about 5 years old. No bios updates remaining.22:07
eruditehermitjeremy31, oerheks it seems to crash in a similar way on Windows though it takes a lot longer to crash on windows. Ubuntu it's almost immediate on login screen.22:08
eruditehermitjeremy31, oerheks I've never seen an iGPU go bad but could this be that?22:08
eruditehermitjeremy31, I took it apart and cleaned it after this started happening. blew off the dust22:09
eruditehermitjeremy31, I didn't disassemble it completely though. I could take the mainboard out and try cleaning more22:10
eruditehermitit's a bad time to have to spend money on a new laptop which is why I'm trying to keep it alive22:10
