oerheksehm, if one runs firefox from terminal, such warnings are normal.00:01
oerhekswhy running firefox from terminal?00:01
syphyrim not running from terminal.. this is in syslog00:02
syphyrbut i'll assume if it was a real issue then firefox would not actually start00:03
syphyrthese scope permission messages seem common00:04
syphyrand if there was a scope issue with systemd, then "systemd-run --user --scope echo hello" would fail00:06
syphyrweird, I only see those scope permission denied messages when starting firefox from the desktop file00:18
syphyrif I start it from terminal, there is no problem00:18
rboxsyphyr: what command is the .desktop file running00:18
syphyrExec=env BAMF_DESKTOP_FILE_HINT=/var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/firefox_firefox.desktop /snap/bin/firefox %u00:19
rboxare you running it like that?00:19
syphyrif I cd to /snap/bin and run ./firefox then there is no permission error00:20
rboxthats not what that exec line is...00:21
syphyrif i run "env BAMF_DESKTOP_FILE_HINT=/var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/firefox_firefox.desktop /snap/bin/firefox" from terminal00:22
syphyrthen no permission error00:22
syphyrsomething with the desktop file is calling systemd00:23
syphyrin a weird way00:23
rboxits the context of the window manager00:24
syphyrahh.. i think i see why00:24
rboxvs the context of the terminal00:25
syphyri have two versions of firefox installed00:25
rboxlol00:25
syphyrone from the deb file00:25
syphyrand one from snap00:25
syphyrone of the snap firefox.desktop files has an exec line like this: Exec=firefox %u00:26
syphyrill bet that if I remove the older firefox from the deb then the permission error goes away00:27
syphyrjust a theory00:27
syphyri could just edit the desktop file to point to /snap/bin/00:27
=== halvors1 is now known as halvors
syphyrerr, no..00:28
syphyrthis is the one that i think its using: /var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/firefox_firefox.desktop00:29
syphyrand that one is pointing to /snap/bin/00:29
syphyrnope, there is a difference b/n running exec command from terminal and clicking on desktop file00:39
syphyrbut i dont see it00:39
syphyrrunning exec command has no errors00:39
syphyrproblem solved by adding "systemd.legacy_systemd_cgroup_controller=1" to grub01:31
syphyrit was a systemd bug01:31
rboxi dont know how enabling a legacy feature in the kernel to fix an error is a "bug"01:32
=== halvors1 is now known as halvors
syphyrits not enabling a legacy feature in the kernel..01:54
syphyrits enabling a legacy feature in systemd01:54
syphyrthe kernel does not have legacy_systemd_cgroup_controller in the code01:55
syphyrbut this is only an issue when using a super old version of systemd01:55

Guest7825rbox, thanks, I just setup a vm router on this Ubuntu 22.04 desktop, just trying to map out the virtual connections https://i.imgur.com/gbwM3aD.png04:25
Guest7825rbox, so line 2 would be the gateway for the host (Ubuntu 22.04), where would I enter GW 100.64.0.1?  100.64.0.1 is also the IP of the bridged ISP router?04:27
rboxthat came from dhcp04:27
Guest7825rbox, ok, so the ISP bridged router must be assigned 100.64.0.1 either from the ISP public WAN IP or from the vm router 192.168.1.170?04:29
rboxwherver you are getting the dhcp from04:29
Guest7825rbox, I have listed 100.64.0.1 in the ISP bridged router.  Is this wrong or should I also add a GW 100.64.0.1 somewhere on the host's interfaces?04:29
Guest7825rbox, the dhcp is probably coming from the vm router, however I notice the ISP bridged router already has 100.64.0.1 before I create the vm router.  Therefore the bridged router might be getting 100.64.0.1 from the ISP's public WAN IP?04:31

leftyfbGuest6170: high end hardware, especially with a discrete GPU, I've seen act unstable if the proprietary drivers aren't installed21:28
leftyfbrardiol1: isn't the other "seat" running as a different user?21:29
leftyfbGuest6170: as for logs, I would start with running "dmesg -Tw" in a terminal and trying to reproduce the issue21:29

leftyfbGuest6170: you can also run "nautilus" from a terminal and watch the messages there while you try to reproduce the issue21:29
Guest6170That's my hardware21:29
rardiol1leftyfb: it's not logged in yet, there's nothing on the screen, I want to run xrandr to see if I can fix it.21:30
leftyfbrardiol1: login as the user21:30
rardiol1A bit hard when I don't see anything but guess I can configure autologin and try that. thanks21:30
leftyfbrardiol1: you do know xrandr doesn't save the settings right?21:33
rardiol1leftyfb: frankly I just want to know if the monitor settings are available at all because I'm not sure if my setup theoretically works21:34
oerhekscheck your mobo for a bios update, current is F9A   https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B650M-GAMING-X-AX-rev-1x/support#support-dl-bios21:38
Guest6170I have updated it to the last version21:38
Guest6170I will try the drivers from amd website. So far it seems the problem happens only when copying large sized folders from ss2 to ss1. Hope it's not a common issue as this is supposed to be my main workstation rig21:41
tomreynyou most likely don't want the amd graphics drivers from amd.com, but stick to those that ubuntu provides.21:43
leftyfb2023 Jun 18 17:27:33 <leftyfb>no, from the "additional drivers" utility built into ubuntu21:44
tomreynwell they won't be there either because they're open source21:44
Guest6170They are not there21:44
tomreynbetter focus on your logs.21:44

rardiol1leftyfb: for some reason the autologin didn't actually work but configuring it and rebooting made the screen work. Thanks for the help.21:49

CrellHi folks.  Slightly silly question. I am replacing one of my 3 hard drives, which is I believe failing.  sda.  However... I'm not sure which of the 3 physical drives is sda. :-)  What's the easiest way to figure that out?  Can I get a serial number from the OS somehow and then check the hardware, or is there a better way?22:32
oerhekssudo hdparm -i /dev/sd* # would show info and serialnr22:35
oerheksudevadm info --query=all --name=/dev/sda | grep ID_SERIAL22:36
oerheksmore than one solution22:36
oerheksdo that for sdb and sdc and so on22:37
CrellHm.  The hdparm one is giving me a DMA fail "inappropriate ictl for device" on all three drives.22:37
Crelludevadm works, though.22:37
oerheksyou think your hdd fails, maybe it is the controller?22:37
CrellNot impossible, I suppose.  The symptoms are overall system slowness on seemingly any IO, yet low load.  I ran smartctl -t short on each of the drives, and sda never finished, but the other two did.  Hence I concluded sda was dying.  (It's a 3 disk RAID5 array.)22:39

CrellWell this is fun.  mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --fail /dev/sda # Reports no such device.  There's also an md1, but it doesn't seem to be found there, either.  Yet I know it's there, because I could try running smart tests on it.  Wha?23:14
LagairI seem to be doing something wrong. I have used linux as a desktop, off and on, for about 20 years. The desktop has gotten where I don't even really notice that I'm not in Windows anymore. Except for one thing, the handling of multi-monitors. I have constantly fought this. I run 3 4k screens on one video card. Upon screen wake, I have to re-setup23:31
Lagaireverything, every time. Either Gnome forgets the number of screens, the location, the resolution, or the scaling. If not all of the above. Then I have to reposition all my windows. Please tell me that I'm doing something wrong and not that Gnome is terrible at multiple screens. If so, what DM and WM should I be running to not have these problems?23:31
