notsudhackarHey folks! has there been some change in the available kernel packages for ubuntu 14.04? I see a sharp decline in the packages published by Packages.gz with source "linux"?05:31
notsudhackarThis kernel was recently available with source linux05:31

notsudhackarIts not about support. I just want to know what changed. Can you redirect me to some channel where I can discuss this?06:18

hsiktas[m]is there any backup tool for Linux that allows me to make full image backups of my boot drive to an external drive while the system is running? There are some (offline?) disk cloning tools but these only allow one image on the target drive. Having daily incremental backups of the entire drive would be preferable: https://alternativeto.net/software/macrium-reflect/?platform=linux11:33
ravagea full image while the system is running is not a good idea. it may work with snapshots on VMs but not on dedicated hardware11:38
hsiktas[m]it is not like I am trying to backup a live sql system. On my Windows and Mac desktops, these live backups have been reliable for years and I wonder if there is something similar for Linux desktop users like Macrium Reflect or macOS Time Machine11:42
Guest68When installing Ubuntu Server it's currently assuming that it's going to be part of a cloud environment. Is there a way during installation to enable it to not assume this please?11:54
ravageGuest68: the server installation works completely offline11:55
ograyeah, what makes you think it needs to be part of a cloud env ?11:55
Guest68Yes it works offline. However it always installs the components for Cloud init, which in certain circumstances would not be desirable. For instance if its use case doesn't involve being in a cloud, such as a classic based file server or other non-cloud type server.11:57
ogracloud-init is just a tool to automate some settings ... despite the name (it was initially developed to configure cloud-image on boot) it has nothing to do with clouds11:57
ograit allows you to run scripts and set configs for your server from a single file ... it replaces what you might have heard of as "preseeding" in context of debian installas11:58
ogra*installs11:59
ravageand you can just remove it after the installation.. with cloud-init as ogra said :D11:59
ogra😄11:59
Guest68That's good for after install, however I was wondering whether a future installer version could off a choice whether or not to install it at all. Specifically the "cloud-init" package.12:01
ravageno12:02
ravage(that's a guess. but i dont see why)12:02
Guest68Well currently the instance I'm planning to install is going to be shared storage for a pair of hypervisors. So I'm not going to be needing or using cloud-init on it.12:04
ravageit is totally ok to just ignore it12:05
Guest68It's going to be part of a home lab. As part of a Linux based setup. So your likely to see more of me around here.12:08

aiboops forgot sources.list12:15
ograGuest68, as i said above, cloud-init is replacing preseeding ... so it is used and needed by the installer to do unttended installs if needed ... but you can completely ingore it and can also uninstall it after install12:15
aibravage: So upstream (archive.ubuntu.com and security.ubuntu.com) is just giving me an inconsistent view of the package listings?12:20
=== blaklistd8 is now known as blaklistd
ravagewhy would you think anything is inconsistent?12:21
aibravage: because when I try to update those packages in aptitude I get "#Broken: 13" at the top and the "possible actions" red bar at the bottom?12:24
ravagenever tried that with aptitude12:24
ravageyou can just wait until the packages install or you can do "apt upgrade <list of packages>"12:25
aibokay, let me try that. output should be easier to paste than aptitude :)12:25
aibravage: https://dpaste.com/3UMVVQATH12:28
ravageso there may be a reason why the packages are kept back12:30
aibI'm very bad at this apt stuff. The only other time something like this happened, was back around 2007, and the cause was my mirror being out-of-date. Switching to archive. fixed the problem12:31

BinarySaviorFYI anyone interested from yesterday, even after wiping HD and installing fresh OS, POST is still showing those ACPI issues before booting into desktop environment12:57

BinarySaviorthis message pops up every time i boot, before desktop environment starts up13:14
BinarySaviorit happened even after I wiped the SDD and fresh OS install13:14
BinarySaviorbut yea it's definitely not ubuntu related, something with the motherboard / case I suspect13:18
BinarySaviorLike the controls for the FAN LEDs is not plugged in, or the reset button, or something like that13:19
jhutchinsWorth checking.13:25
jhutchinsAlso might be worthwhile to boot a live imaeg of a couple of other distros.  Debian, sure, but maybe try a non-debian branch.  (Isn't Mint supposed to be built from scratch?).  Maybe a RHEL clone?13:27
jhutchinsFedora I guess.13:27
jhutchinsSuSE is pretty radically different.  Then there are the BSD branches.13:28
BinarySaviorjhutchins, if I recall correctly I saw this message briefly splash when booting into ubuntu live usb but I didn't try any other OS, I am fairly sure I did not plug in the fan LEDs properly, and I know on the main J1 pins or whatever with the power btn and reset sw, there were a few missing from there that my case does not support13:42

mbeierlAnyone know how to tell Gnome to stop tiling windows on left or right edge automatically?  Like sometimes when I want to make a window bigger, it suddenly snaps to an edge, vertically maximized, but horizontally 1/3 of the screen width.  Attempts to make the window large fail until I "unmaximize" it by changing the height15:00
pydev1i am following this guide https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-vsftpd-for-a-user-s-directory-on-ubuntu-18-0415:01

mbeierlBinarySavior, the drive is fully encrypted all the time, so all drive access does incur a slight performance overhead to encrypt/decrypt.  The cost is dependent on your CPU and any form of encryption offload15:02

at3560kHi, I've got a question about ubuntu images, and my Googling is failing me.  Situation: $CORP is building a nightly pythons, and the vulnerability scanner is complaining about CVEs.  I understand this happens, things aren't fixed immediately.  When I pull dockerhubs ubuntu:lunar - I see a created time of 2023-06-15T08:33:59  -- about a week ago.  I am confused -- are the latest images not nightlies?  Should we be applying patches to them ourselves, or16:34

bodicceaapparently, core files are not generated anymore, and /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern gives "|/usr/share/apport/apport -p%p -s%s -c%c -d%d -P%P -u%u -g%g -- %E". I thought apport would use a default core naming for *my own* programs ;-) What is the correct way to have apport working without disturbing me ?17:02
bodicceaSorry: I meant "core are not generated anymore in current directory on 23.04".17:16
ograbodiccea, that pattern is there since 2012 and core files should go into /var/lib/apport/coredump/ ... (and after being processed they go to /var/lib/whoopsie/ from where tey get uploaded to errors.ubuntu.com if apport is enabled in /etc/default/apport)17:23
bodicceaogra, I know it is for long time, *but* I got my core dumps in my directory before the 23.04 upgrade (same program, same directory). Whatever the magic involved here, forget about it, I did put "core" in /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern and disabled apport, it becomes too disturbing.17:32

Guest34I think that my Ubuntu 22.04 OS, is changing my DNS from the VPN DNS, back to my local DNS, randomly.23:53
sarnoldGuest34: it's common for dhcp servers to tell dhcp clients what DNS servers to use when they assign a lease23:54
