weedmiccybersoul: any chance you were tunneling through a third computer?  it can appear to freeze, when it is really just a very long delay to write to the host screen.10:51
weedmicalso, one could use screen.  connect via screen, save the session, disconnect, and go back and reopen the same screen session - to see if it exeucted, but took a long time.  normally, when one closes a terminal w ssh, the command is terminated when the connection is.10:52
cybersoulit printed out one line out of like 8. so because my client terminal froze and I could not exit or do anything. I restarted the other machine which I have physical access to.11:01

tekisuihello crin13:03
weedmicCrin: you want to prevent the creation of root ?what accounts?13:08
luc4Hello! I'm trying to install Ubuntu server on a HP desktop. Apparently everything went well and I can boot into the new system. The only problem is that the only way to boot is to enter the boot selection of the firmware and manually select the ubuntu partition to boot. If this is not done, I get a boot loop and I can spot the error "Reset system". Any way to fix this? Thanks!13:09
ograCrin, you'd need to run virtmanager as non-root user, then the qcow images would be created under the credentials of said user ... not sure you can actually tell it to not make them root owned if you run it as root13:10
Crinim not running virt-manager  with sudo13:10
Crinwhen i create a disk qcow file it is created with root13:10
ograhmm might be that libvirt runs suid root ...13:11
ogra*libvirtd13:11
ograif that is true, i dont think it would be possible witout patching libvirtd to chown them on the fly13:12
Crini found something that might work in /etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf13:13

CrinI*13:26
Crinok i found the the fix in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf it was set to root14:05
Crinlibvirt switched to libvirt-qemu so setfacl works too but it, requires setting it everyime you create a new pool in virt-manager14:06
enoqhi, is there a quick overview over the difference between snap and flatpak?14:07
Crin@enoq https://linuxhint.com/snap_vs_flatpak_vs_appimage/14:08
enoqthank you14:09
enoqso looking at that matrix, it's the same thing?14:10
CrinThere same differences here and there but it serves a simulr function yes14:12
Crinpersanlly i gravitate towards appimages snce its more portable14:13
Crinpersonally*14:13
ograthey are massively different in approach, implementation and functonality14:13
ograyou can not really compare the two14:13
ografaltpak is a mechnism to provide desktop apps only14:14
ograsnaps are a fully fledged confined packaging system that allows you to ship anything ... there are kernels, bootloaders, servers and cli apps packaged as snaps14:14
Crinok and appimages are more like snaps?14:15
ograappimages are completely different to the other two and fullfil even a different purpose14:17
enoqso snap is a bit more docker like?14:17
ogranot really ... snaps and docker use similar parts of the kernel for ther confinement ... but snaps do not have any overhead here while docker uses a lot of userspace stuff to implement said confinement14:19
enoqthere's a daemon similar to docker, right?14:19
ograthere is a daemon but snaps themselves do use the kernel bits more directly than docker14:19
enoqso they don't run into that "essentially root" problem that docker has?14:20
ograalso snaps are gpg signed readonly squashfs files so they are 100% tinker proof while docker containers are actual editable filesystem images14:20
ograsnaps have buit in self test mechanisms and built in rollback capabilities ... i.e. if your snap updates and you ship ... say a webserver ... you can have a test if port 80 is open after a refresh ... a fail of that test will automatically make it roll back to the former version14:22
Crinsquashfs is there a big performance hit?14:22
ograsnaps only use binary deltas for upgrades between eh two squashfses so only the changes you actually need come down the drain over the network14:23
leftyfbmaybe this discussion should be moved to #ubuntu-discuss ?14:23
ograCrin, yes, there is a minor hit on initial startup due to that ... zero at runtime though14:23
ograand yes, we should take this t #ubuntu-discuss since it is turning offtopic for here14:24
Crini still think it is information? wouldnt discussion be a bit more back and forth?14:24
Crinwe are merely picking ogras brain ^^14:24

ograi'd move it out of the dir just to be sure it doesnt interfere17:42
ioriaMadLamb, no tabs imean17:43
ogra(you can indeed move it back later)17:43
ograyeah, yaml is pretty nasty if you do not use spaces for indentation17:43
ogrado never use tabs 🙂17:43
MadLambhttps://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/KrblTgWf/PXL_20230627_174310168.jpg17:43
ioriaMadLamb, ok, reboot17:43
MadLambioria: when I do netplan --debug apply it gives me a warning that ovsdb-server is not running17:45
ioriaMadLamb, ok, reboot17:45
MadLambioria: still can't ping. Network unreachable17:47
ioriaMadLamb, but i feel like we 'll need to activate the wifi  (seems the only normal nic there)17:47
ioriaMadLamb, ever worked that dongle ?17:48
MadLambioria: yes. It's a razer thunderbolt 4 dock17:49
MadLambioria: good stuff17:50
ograwould even be better stuff if it worked 🙂17:51
MadLambhttps://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/G9vhPi8J/PXL_20230627_174849137.jpg17:51
MadLambogra: i don't think the issue is the dongle17:51
ioriaMadLamb, ip address add 192.168.x.x/24 dev <interface>17:52
MadLambogra: it's more about how removing Bluetooth packages breaks your whole system.17:52
ioriaMadLamb, replace x and interface17:52
ograwell, packages depend on each other in the dpkg world ...17:52
ograif you pull out the carpet low enough things will go bad17:53
artemhey17:53
ioriaMadLamb, like, ip address add 192.168.86.4/24 dev enx806d9-blah17:53
MadLambogra: yes it makes sense that Bluetooth breaks if you remove the Network-Manager, but it doesn't make sense that network manager disappears if you remove Bluetooth.17:54
MadLambogra: network manager should be the carpet, not bluetooth17:55
ioriaMadLamb, you did something else, you know that17:55
ogra$ LC_ALL=C apt-cache depends network-manager|grep blue17:55
ogra  Depends: libbluetooth317:55
ogra$17:55
ograwell ...17:55
ograif yu dont remove the lib layer all will be fine ...17:56
MadLambioria: i swear I didn't17:56
ioriaMadLamb, you removed 'all' blurt pkgs ....17:56
iorialike gnome-bluetooth-common17:56
MadLambogra: i think that was the one. But again nonsense that the carpet depends on what goes on top.17:57
ioriaor libgnome-bluetooth-3.0-1317:57
ograyeah, you most likely removed libbluetooth ... that tore out NM17:57
MadLambYes17:57
ioriathat was not necessary17:57
ograNM is linked against that lib and will break if you remove it ...17:57
MadLambI didn't know :D17:57
MadLambNow I know17:58
ograif yu dont *use* bluetooth the lib is not doing anyting but sitting on disk17:58
ogra(like most libs)17:58
MadLambThat IP address add did something but i still can't ping18:01
MadLambNow I can see the IP I added in the device (on IP a)18:01
ograyeah, you are missing a route18:03
ograand after that you will be missing a dns entry18:03
MadLambHelp the noob please :B18:04
Roeyhni18:08
Roeywhy do I keep hearing pops in my bluetooth audio (speakers and headphone)?18:08
RoeyI made a change to my bluetooth configuration but forgot what it was.. it was so that I could get my Bluetooth headset's mic supported.18:08
Roeyand ever since then, the quality of the audio on both the headset and the bluetooth speaker degraded significantly18:09
ograMadLamb, do you know the IP of your gateway/router ?18:09
MadLambRoey: make sure you don't remove your Bluetooth libraries.18:09
ogralol18:09
Roeyah18:09
MadLambogra: yes18:09
MadLambogra: 192.168.86.118:10
ograso try: sudo ip route add 192.168.86.0/24 via 192.168.86.118:10
ograthen try to ping again18:10
MadLambogra: nexthop has invalid gateway18:11
ograMadLamb, hmm ... sudo ip route del 192.168.86.0/2418:14
ograremove hat one and lets try something different18:14
ogra*that one18:14
MadLambOk18:14
ograsudo ip route add default via 192.168.86.118:14
MadLambogra: same. Nexthop has invalid gateway18:16
ograweird18:16
ograthat last one should definitely work ... are you sure the router is online ?18:16
cahyowellcome18:16
ograMadLamb, do you get ping replies when you do "ping 192.168.86.1" ?18:20
mrituhello18:22
MadLambogra: no18:26
MadLambogra: network unreachable18:27
MadLambCan't i somehow download the packages in another computer, load it on a USB stick and install?18:27
ograyou surely can18:28
ograbut that will be painful ... you will need to get the dependencies right18:28
ograMadLamb, what release is installed ? 22.04 ?18:29
ograMadLamb, if that is the case https://packages.ubuntu.com/jammy/network-manager ... yu want all packages with a red dot there ... to download the deb you scroll to the bottom, click the arcitecture name and then one of the links that show up on the next page18:34
* ogra needs to go AFK for a while 18:34
MadLambogra: i did not remove the network manager. Only the Bluetooth stuff. Does it get removed automatically?18:38
ograMadLamb, we discussed that above ...18:42
ograand i really need to leave now ...18:42
MadLambogra: i got that it gets affected (stops working) but didn't understand if it really gets removed (needs to be installed again)18:43
MadLambBut ok. Thanks. Helped a lot18:43
ograMadLamb, yes, packages get removed if you remove someting they hard-depend on ... the website above lists all dependencies of the NM package (everyting with red dot) and give a link to donwload the .deb file as i described ... make sure to ave all dependencies and install NM again18:49
* ogra really out now 🙂18:49
MadLambogra: thanks <318:50
masberhow can I install gcc c2.6.32 in ubuntu 22.4?19:15
masber22.04?19:15
jhutchinsmasber: What are you actually trying to do that you need it?19:38
masberI am building a rust application in my ubuntu 22.04 laptop19:38
jhutchins!info gcc19:39
masberthe problem I have is the binary I get after compilation does not run in a remote server because the C library in the server is older19:39
ubottugcc (4:12.2.0-3ubuntu1, lunar): GNU C compiler. In component main, is optional. Built by gcc-defaults. Size 6 kB / 53 kB19:39
masberreading rust docs I can tell rustc the linker I want to use, so I would like to use a linker for 2.6.3219:40
jhutchinsmasber: Interesting.  I know this is possible without messing up the system-wide gcc, but I don't know the details.19:40
jhutchinsmasber: Is building it on the target server an option?19:42
masberno, the reality is I have to build the binary in a github cicd pipeline, which also uses ubuntu 22.04 (same as my laptop) therefore I am testing in my laptop first to I know what to install in the cicd pipeline target host/vm/container19:43
MadLambogra: It worked. I only had to download the Bluetooth library and the network manager debs, revert netplan, restart and I could ping again. Then did the full reinstall of the Ubuntu packages and fully fixed.19:44
