[08:04] Why is xfce4-screensaver still at 4.16? This version crashes when you try to unlock the screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-screensaver/+bug/2015922 [08:04] -ubottu:#xubuntu-devel- Launchpad bug 2015922 in xfce4-screensaver (Ubuntu) "xfce4-screensaver blanks screen multiple times while trying to unlock the screen" [Undecided, Confirmed] [08:06] The xfce4 metapackage is at 4.18 ..and I'm using Xubuntu 23.04 btw [08:06] Pretty sure xfce4-screensaver 4.18 was a much later release. [09:00] Would be nice if there was some way to lift the screensaver. One would think that being able to unlock your computer after the screensaver activates is a pretty important feature :) [09:01] I installed Xubuntu on 3 different computers when I convinced my wife to finally ditch Windows.. had to uninstall the screensaver on 2 of them, but I want her to be able to lock her laptop so that's not an option [09:02] Sorry for the negative tone. I have used Xubuntu a lot in the past and had a very good experience, I'm just a bit frustrated with this issue and surprised that it's been around for such a long time [09:05] I mean, I certainly don't mind the "tone" since you're not just screaming "fixit your crap is broken" :P screensavers do seem to be a problem point for Linux as a whole, light-locker works for some but it also ends up being quite broken for others, xfce4-screensaver...well it works where it works, but on others it may crash or something, xscreensaver isn't problem free either. On one system I [09:05] actually switched to i3lock since that worked well on that system, but it wouldn't be the most user friendly. [09:07] We do have a backports PPA that you could try getting the latest version of xfce4-screensaver and checking if that works for you any better? [09:08] I felt like I was starting to get a bit sarcastic, and I didn't want to come across as rude towards FOSS maintainers/developers. I know it's an un-thankful work, and that users shouldn't demand people do things for them [09:09] (https://gitlab.xfce.org/apps/xfce4-screensaver/-/issues/1 is the one I almost referenced.) [09:09] -ubottu:#xubuntu-devel- Issue 1 in apps/xfce4-screensaver "xfce4-screensaver on laptop: lid action with suspend/resume shows desktop content instead of lock-screen window" [Opened] [09:12] As for the backports, https://launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/+archive/ubuntu/staging [09:13] Thanks! Any risk of updating other packages to something unstable by adding the staging ppa? [09:14] Well, it's got *every* Xfce package in there, so there could be regressions. But they're of the stable release so they *should* be just fine. [09:15] I'll give it a try. [09:19] I also have a strange possibly screen-saver related issue on one of the other computers, where I uninstalled xfce4-screensaver.. DPMS is disabled if I check with xset -q, but it still seems like something turns off the display when it's been idle for a while. Everything is also disabled in the energy settings. The problem is that the only way I've [09:19] found to wake the display is to switch to a different tty (ctrl-alt-F2), suspend the computer, wake the computer, and switch back to the graphical desktop.. I don't expect anyone here to help me troubleshoot it, but is it something you recognize off the top of your head? [09:24] Not offhand, but what you could do just to make sure is disable xfce4-power-manager, or try putting it in presentation mode, and see if it still happens. With xfpm disabled, you could also look into /etc/systemd/logind.conf [09:29] xfce4-screensaver from staging appears to have fixed the unlocking issue! [09:29] I'll try disabling power manager on the other computer. thanks! [09:31] Fantastic news! I'm glad to know that it works better at least for some.
