[07:26] hello there is there any one that can help me with a very very slow playback, in which Xubuntu is installed on a Vertual Machine with 4GB of RAM allocated to it and 128 Mb of video memory. [10:01] i have tp link t2u nano wifi+bluetooth. When i plug in bluetooth works but wifi doesnt [10:54] xu-help11w: what does sudo lspci -knnv | nc termbin.com 9999 print? [10:56] also, what's your xubuntu version? lsb_release -ds [11:20] xu-help11w: this might help https://gist.github.com/julianlam/0ce7692ca10fb91970b6693bc02587ce [16:00] Hello. I've been having trouble with my graphics card since yesterday. I've got a Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti Mobile, and I was using the 530 driver. It worked fine until I tried to update it. The version changed to 535 and then it stopped working - I wound up booting to the console. [16:00] I had to remove the 535 driver, and now I'm on nouveau's driver and don't know which driver I can install that will actually work. [16:03] The drivers being listed in the Software and Updates applet are: [16:03] 535-server-open [16:03] 450-server [16:03] 535-server [16:03] 535 [16:03] 525-server [18:03] xu-help31w: https://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx recommends series 535 for "production" [18:04] (and i'm *not* suggesting to download it off nvidia.com) [18:06] I tried installing 535 but it didn't work for me. I got this error. I'll paste it here in a sec. [18:06] https://dpaste.com/7WS9BXPZT [18:07] This happened when I tried to use the Software and Updates applet to install the driver and rebooted. I had to Control-Alt-F3 into the shell and remove the driver to get the desktop back. [18:11] I haven't tried installing the Open Kernel version, though. Should I do that instead? [18:25] hello everyone [20:52] Hi. I've been having trouble trying to install nvidia drivers for my graphics card - it's a Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti Mobile. I've been trying to install the 535 driver but something keeps going wrong. Whenever I reboot I keep getting brought to a black screen with a cursor instead of the desktop. And then I have to remove the graphics drivers each time [20:52] just so I can return to nouveau and get the desktop. Can anyone help me? [21:12] xu-help31w, how you install the driver? [21:13] I first tried to use the Software and Updates applet I have to install the Nvidia 535 driver. That didn't work - when I restarted, I got a black screen with a blinking cursor. [21:14] Next, I tried to use the command line to install the PPA GPU Repository and tried to use that to install 535. That didn't work either. [21:14] I've also tried to install 525 through the Software and Updates applet. That also didn't work. [21:15] xu-help31w, run: inxi -Gxxc0 | nc termbin.com 9999 [21:15] share the url [21:16] https://termbin.com/k7jy6 [21:16] https://termbin.com/k7jy [21:17] The second link is the correct one. [21:19] xu-help31w, something is completely messed up in your system, first of all whatever weird thing happened to your intel GPU driver: N/A [21:19] Uh oh. So what should I do? [21:20] xu-help31w, i'd start with going to BIOS and look for a GPU related setting, something like: select the default GPU, onboard/discrete/both [21:21] check and see if onboard is not disabled. [21:22] Alright, I'll try to look. How do I go to BIOS? And how do I do that without getting kicked out of here? I'm typing this on the same computer that's having the problem. [21:23] well you will get disconnected because in order to get to BIOS menu, you need to reboot and while booting to keep pressing either F9/10/ESC or whatever key is the BIOS key on your machine. [21:24] it differs from brand to brand, for HP it's F9 [21:24] I'm on an MSI. [21:25] So I should start by enabling onboard default GPU or something? [21:25] so it's the DELETE key [21:25] Or do you just want me to check what it's set to and then tell you what it is? [21:26] it's either DEL or F2 for MSI and yes, enalbe onboard GPU if there is such a setting and better take some pics, [21:33] I'm back from bringing up the BIOS and taking photos of everything. The bad news is that I couldn't find any graphics options anywhere. No setting to determine onboard/discrete/both or anything like that. [21:35] xu-help31w, ok run: ls /etc/X11/ | nc termbin.com 9999 [21:35] share url === TheMaster is now known as Unit193 [21:37] https://termbin.com/yt41 [21:38] and: ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d | nc termbin.com 9999 [21:39] I didn't get any link for entering that command. [21:40] if you simply run: ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d [21:41] does it show anything? [21:41] It doesn't seem to do anything. [21:41] ok now: dpkg -l | grep -i nv | nc termbin.com 9999 [21:42] https://termbin.com/boad [21:46] xu-help31w, ok there is a lot of nvidia stukk that needs to be cleaned up and in some scenario it might end up in a broken X so you won't be albe to get into the desktop, probably even reinstalling the system, are you sure you want to go for this? Do you have any data back up? Any installation media for an eventul reinstall? [21:47] I've got my flash drive that I used to install Xubuntu on. [21:48] ok then we can try if you want. [21:49] Alright. What do I need to do? [21:51] sudo apt-get remove --purge '^nvidia-.*' [21:52] and notice if it drags down the xubuntu-desktop package, if it marks to remove this package then we will need to reinstall it afretwareds. [21:52] d [21:52] Done. It looks like nothing nvidia-related was included, so it didn't remove anything. [21:53] ok let's check: dpkg -l | grep -i nv | nc termbin.com 9999 [21:55] http://termbin.com/elnw [21:56] sudo apt purge libnvidia* [21:56] Done. [21:57] dpkg -l | grep -i nv | nc termbin.com 9999 [21:58] http://termbin.com/ywuz [21:59] sudo apt purge libnvidia-* [22:00] Didn't remove anything. Noticed the messages which said "Package 'libnvidia-encode-535' is not installed, so not removed. Did you mean 'libnvidia-encode-535:i386'?" [22:01] sudo apt purge libnvidia-encode-535:i386 [22:04] https://termbin.com/gid2 [22:05] removed the encode and compute. Dunno what happened to the fbcl thing. [22:05] But when I tried to specifically purge its i386 library, I got the message that it wasn't installed, so it wasn't removed. [22:06] sudo apt remove libnvidia-fbc1-535:i386 linux-modules-nvidia-525-5.19.0-46-generic linux-modules-nvidia-530-open-5.19.0-41-generic linux-objects-nvidia-525-5.19.0-46-generic linux-objects-nvidia-535-5.19.0-46-generic linux-signatures-nvidia-5.19.0-46-generic [22:08] https://termbin.com/3uol [22:09] sudo apt purge linux-modules-nvidia-525-5.19.0-46-generic linux-modules-nvidia-530-open-5.19.0-41-generic [22:13] Purged the last nvidia-objects thing as well. I think all that's left is to remove screen-resolution-extra. https://termbin.com/7693 [22:14] sudo apt autoremove [22:15] That removed screen-resolution-extra, dkms, and dctrl-tools. [22:15] sudo apt autoclean [22:15] https://termbin.com/y8a6 [22:15] And I've just done sudo apt autoclean. [22:16] sudo apt purge linux-objects-nvidia-535-5.19.0-46-generic [22:16] Done. [22:17] ls -a ~/ | nc termbin.com 9999 [22:18] https://termbin.com/bu86 [22:21] dpkg -l | grep -i xubuntu [22:21] does it show xubuntu-desktop? [22:21] Yes. [22:22] mv ~/.nv ~/Downloads [22:23] Done [22:23] mv ~/.nvidia-settings-rc ~/Downloads [22:24] Done. [22:24] cat ~/.Xdefaults | nc termbin.com 9999 [22:25] https://termbin.com/nreb [22:26] ok reboot now and let's see what happens [22:26] Will do. See you on the other side [22:29] I'm back. But I don't seem to have any audio going. [22:29] Wait, false alarum [22:29] inxi -Gxxc0 | nc termbin.com 9999 [22:29] I can hear things that my computer's playing. [22:29] http://termbin.com/7f67 [22:30] dmesg | grep drm | nc termbin.com 9999 [22:32] dmesg: read kernel buffer failed: Operation not permitted [22:32] sudo dmesg | grep drm | nc termbin.com 9999 [22:32] http://termbin.com/uhms [22:33] cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999 [22:34] http://termbin.com/5p21 [22:35] dammit [22:35] Now what? [22:36] i think i found it [22:36] you followed some random advice and added nomodeset to your boot kernel parameters. [22:37] run: pkexec env DISPLAY=$DISPLAY XAUTHORITY=$XAUTHORITY mousepad /etc/default/grub [22:37] Alright. [22:37] tell me when it opens up a file to edit [22:37] And I know it doesn't fix anything, but, I'm sorry for following that random piece of advice. I'm still very, very new to using Linux [22:37] I've got the file open. [22:38] Do I just remove "nomodeset" from the file? [22:38] that's no problem. that's how we all learnet, through many many flames :) [22:38] I've found it on this line here: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" [22:39] remove nomodeset, save, close and run: sudo update-grub [22:40] Done. [22:40] cat /etc/default/grub | nc termbin.com 9999 [22:41] I got a warning saying Warning: os-prober will not be executed to detect other bootable partitions. [22:41] Systems on them will not be added to the GRUB boot configuration. [22:41] Check GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER documentation entry. [22:41] as long as Xubuntu is the only system running, don't worry about that message. [22:42] Cool. [22:43] did you run: cat /etc/default/grub | nc termbin.com 9999 [22:44] http://termbin.com/j7co [22:45] looks good, reboot. [22:45] Will do. [22:46] I have returned. [22:47] inxi -Fxxc0 | nc termbin.com 9999 [22:47] http://termbin.com/3wck [22:49] sudo apt install nvidia-detect [22:50]  Unable to locate package nvidia-detect [22:51] sudo ubuntu-drivers list | nc termbin.com 9999 [22:52] http://termbin.com/c6cl5 [22:54] sudo apt install nvidia-driver-535 [22:56] notice if it goes smoothly without any warnings or errors. [22:56] I didn't see any errors. I just got the prompt to install it, said "y", and then it finished installing. Should I reboot and hope it works out, or...? [22:57] yes reboot [22:57] Hope this works. [22:58] I'm back. [22:59] And I can actually open up Steam now [22:59] Looks like following your advice has resolved my problem. [22:59] ok that's good but first let's check if it actually works. [22:59] open nvidia settings from the menu. [23:00] I've opened up the settings. [23:01] now go to your GPU name tab [23:01] open some game and see if the card actualy works, is loaded. [23:01] Will do. [23:02] You sure there isn't some benchmark program I can run to check instead? [23:02] open terminal and run: glxgears [23:03] Gears show up, and they look to be running pretty smoothly. [23:03] how many FPS? [23:03] 143-144 FPS. My monitor's got a 144 refresh rate. [23:04] i'd like to see a screenshot of your nvidia-settings dialog. [23:05] Dialog? [23:05] I can post screenshots of my graphics card info and so forth [23:05] the nvidia-settings window [23:07] https://imgur.com/e2qoL8i [23:08] ok notice GPU utiliation 0% [23:08] Ah. [23:08] now in terminal run: glxgears [23:08] notice if 0% changes [23:08] It does not. [23:09] ok close glxgears [23:09] and run it once again but this time like this: __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia glxgears [23:10] 21% utilization [23:10] ok so it works, now you've got a few options of how you can run your apps with nvidia [23:11] What options do I have? [23:12] 1) whenever you want to run your entire session with nvidia card (pros: performance, cons: power usage, heat, fans) then in nvidia-settings you go to PRIME Profiles, choose nvidia and reboot. [23:12] 2) is my favorite [23:13] What's your favorite? [23:13] you just tweak the shortcut of your app/game that you want to specifically run with nvidia card and the rest of the system runs with intel GPU (pros: low temp, power saving, cons: less performance) [23:13] and no reboot needed. [23:14] I see. How do I do that? [23:15] let's tryit with your steam launcher. [23:15] Alright. I've got Steam open right now. [23:16] ls /usr/share/applications | nc termbin.com 9999 [23:16] share url [23:16] https://termbin.com/zphq1 [23:17] cp /usr/share/applications/steam.desktop ~/.local/share/applications [23:19] I did it. But nothing seems to have happened? [23:19] xu-help31w, remember, whenever you run a command and it gives no output, it means the command completed successfully, in this case just say "done". [23:20] Understood. [23:20] now run: cat ~/.local/share/applications | nc termbin.com 9999 [23:20] wait [23:20] wrong command [23:21] this one: cat ~/.local/share/applications/steam.desktop | nc termbin.com 9999 [23:22] https://termbin.com/m8ri [23:23] now run: mousepad ~/.local/share/applications/steam.desktop [23:24] It's open. [23:24] under the section [Desktop Entry] modify the name like this: Name=Steam NVIDIA [23:24] below find the line: Exec=/usr/bin/steam %U [23:25] I see the line. [23:25] modify that line like this: Exec=sh -c "__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia /usr/bin/steam" [23:26] I've modded the line. [23:26] save, close the file, close the steam app completely and run: cat ~/.local/share/applications | nc termbin.com 9999 [23:28] Done [23:28] url? [23:28] I didn't get one. [23:28] oh my bad sorry [23:29] cat ~/.local/share/applications/steam.desktop | nc termbin.com 9999 [23:29] this one ^^^ [23:29] https://termbin.com/hl3y [23:30] Gotta go for a bit. I'll let you know when I'm back [23:30] ok i gtgtoo, just open steam nvidia and see if GPU utilization is moving and that's all.
