xu-help31wUh oh. Steam GPU utilization isn't moving.00:15
xu-help31wOr, rather00:20
xu-help31wIt's staying at 0%.00:20
HammitI'm thinking of switching from MATE to XUbuntu due to issues with display/multi-monitor/nvidia06:33
HammitJust wondering if XUbuntu is still on XOrg...? It looks like it is...?06:34
Unit193Xfce currently has no support for Wayland, though 4.20 should have at least basic support.06:36
HammitI think XOrg is a safer bet for me, although I really can't say for sure what my current issue is06:37
Hammitbut I notice that not even the Live MATE USB Distro works06:37
Unit193You could try it live and see if it works out for you?06:37
Hammityeah, I think I will06:37
Hammitdownload the ISO onto USB06:37
Hammitanyone here have multi-monitors and NVIDIA with XUbuntu?06:38
Unit193Note that the Xfce desktop isn't trying to be the MATE desktop though, so if you *want* MATE well..06:38
HammitI have always like Xfce tbh, but for some reason way back when I went MATE06:38
HammitShouldn't be a problem to change :)06:38
Hammitcan I ask your opinion on how they differ?06:39
Unit193I don't think I'm going to be much help there, I've been using Xfce for longer than MATE has been around.06:40
HammitSo what is Xfce trying to be that is not MATE?06:41
Unit193Pretty sure the panel is different, last I knew GNOME2/mATE had a places thing and whatnot..  Xfce? :P06:41
HammitI thought they were both classic desktops...06:41
Unit193Yeah.06:41
Hammitahhh06:41
HammitI think Xfce will be fine, but I'll probably just load the ISO and try it :)06:41
Hammitlike you said06:41
Unit193There's a panel plugin, xfce4-places-plugin that could likely bring that back actually.  Xfce is pretty dang customizable.06:41
Unit193G'luck!06:42
Hammityeah, ta06:42
Hammitwell, I'm off to try the ISO I just downloaded. Fingers crossed :) thanks for the help06:59
HammitI just tried the Live XUbuntu 23.04 ISO and it booted to the dialog asking if I wanted to Try or Install07:17
HammitI selected Try and it switched gfx modes to terminal and had an underscore in the top left of the screen and hung07:17
Hammitjust like MATE did for me07:17
Hammitit was a hard hang too. Couldn't even Ctrl+Alt+Del. Had to hit reset button on PC07:18
guivercAll Ubuntu 23.04 ISOs (which includes all flavors like Xubuntu) run the same Ubuntu base; thus if you have video issues with one, you'll generally have them in all.  SysRq commands are the Linux equivalent of Ctrl+Alt+Del (which was a microsoft DOS keystroke only.. carried thru to windows NT as login & other purposes depending on windows version)07:19
guivercSysRq REISUB should have rebooted for example (search 'magic sysrq' & look at the wikipedia page for operation; it's a linux function so isn't Ubuntu specific)07:20
HammitI used to use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace I think to exit X back in the day, but they changed that many years ago07:21
HammitI'll look that up ta07:21
guivercYou could try 'nomodeset' (kernel module command; ie. safe graphics) to try and get around video issues on booting.. but Xfce is less problematic in my experience than MATE, but only marginally as that cannot overcome kernel issues that will be same for all Ubuntu products using the same kernel07:21
guivercs/kernel module command/kernel line command/ ^07:22
Hammityeah. The issue seems to have arisen with the latest bunch of kernel upgrades. From 5.19 working to 6.20 broken07:23
HammitBut I also have proprietary nvidia drivers installed07:23
HammitLuckily I still have 5.19 kernel installed and can boot that07:24
guivercXubuntu 22.04 LTS has a GA kernel stack option (ie. 5.15 is supported for the life of 22.04)... 22.04 & 22.04.1 media default to that option for Xubuntu; 22.04.2 & later media default to HWE thus 5.19 at 22.04.2, 6.2 at 22.04.3 etc07:24
Hammitahhh, interesting07:25
guivercthat applies to all LTS products; though different kernel stack defaults do exist (Lubuntu & Xubuntu work as I describe ^)07:26
guiverchttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack for more details07:26
HammitMy friend was having fun at me because he runs older versions and doesn't upgrade, whereas I upgrade whenever there is one to do. He said it was my fault for upgrading :) hehe07:26
Hammitok, I'll check that link07:26
* guiverc adds there are additional links there too; Xubuntu acts like Ubuntu 18.04 LTS desktop in ISO media defaults (as does Lubuntu)07:27
guivercUbuntu Desktop (20.04 & later) now defaults to HWE for all media; some other flavors allow the installer to choose which gets installed including some OEM (like Ubuntu Desktop)07:28
xu-help6wI’m having a problem connecting to the internet from my laptop. Yesterday I was able to connect to wifi just fine, but now Wi-fi doesn’t even show up when I click the icon on the taskbar.15:27
xu-help31wHaving trouble connecting to the internet. I'm currently using my phone as a hotspot , and wi-fi networks aren't showing up at all when I click on the network tab.15:53
