Yakovalso, is there a way to send to kitty some args?04:54
elias_astolen: SSDs tolerate power cuts better than spinning HDDs. Generally I'd say there are no big differences between different file systems in practice when it comes to power cuts.04:55
elias_astolen: If you have frequent power cuts you might also suffer from AC browning. An UPS is a shield against that too.04:57
jeff_Hello, I needs some help with Ubuntu Server.  Anyone might be able to assist?04:59
jeff_It's probably really easy.  I'm quite noob at linux04:59

elias_ajeff_: Not an Ubuntu related issue, really.05:17
jeff_Well, it's ubuntu server, and I don't know how to use it.  I'm basically asking, how do I execute bytecoind.  Chatgpt told me....05:20

jeff_Yakov, I have hexchat installed.  It was a channel in the hexchat list called Ubuntu Server.  Since I'm trying to use Ubuntu Server to do this project I thought people here might be helpful05:22
elias_ajeff_: This channel is for Ubuntu support. That means support for sw distributed in Ubuntu repositories, not general support with all sw. Hopefully you'll get some assistance.05:24

akikOpenSource: i think docker is the simplest way to do it14:35
OpenSourceso can debootrap do what I need or it can't?14:36
akiklxd is not bad either14:36
OpenSourceWould you know?14:36
akikOpenSource: i pasted the url to the docker docu a minute ago14:36
OpenSourceGuys. I'm asking a question about ubuntu and you're not answering.14:36
OpenSourceIO'mnot asking for docker support14:36
OpenSourceor lxd suport14:36
OpenSourceI'm asking for ubuntu support14:36
OpenSourceplease focus.14:36
akikwtf14:36
leftyfbOpenSource: good luck14:37
akikOpenSource: i pasted the url to the docker docu a minute ago14:37
akikOpenSource: did you even read it?14:37
OpenSourceGuys. I am not interested in docker at moment.14:37
OpenSourceYes I did14:37
OpenSourceAre you reading me?14:37
OpenSourceI'm asking a question about debootstrap and you're talking to me about everything else but that14:37
akikOpenSource: so you didn't read the page14:37
akikOpenSource: $ sudo debootstrap focal focal > /dev/null14:38
OpenSourceno I read your link that you pasted about lxd14:38
akikOpenSource: i didn't14:38
leftyfbOpenSource: debootstrap is considered a very custom and advanced way of installing linux distributions. A bit beyond the scope of the support typically provided here. Feel free to ask for help with it in #linux14:38
OpenSourceOh so that's the issue14:38
OpenSourceYou guys don't wnat to provide free support advanced14:38
akikheh the docu has TWO commands that you need to run14:38
OpenSourceI must buy some ubuntu subscription14:39
OpenSourceSigh.14:39
leftyfbOpenSource: we are all volunteers14:39
akikmust be a lazy week14:39
OpenSourceakik what are you on about14:39
leftyfband I'm pretty sure Canonical, even with paid support isn't going to help you with debootstrap14:39
akikOpenSource: the docu has TWO commands that you need to run14:39
leftyfbit's not a standard method of install14:39
akikOpenSource: then you have a ubuntu 16.04 docker image14:39
OpenSourceSigh.14:39
OpenSourceI'm asking about debootrap. Not docker.14:40
OpenSourceI'm asking about A. you're tlkaing about Z.14:40
akikOpenSource: READ THE PAGE14:40
akikjesus14:40
akikand i don't even believe in jesus14:40
OpenSourceit's scrolled up too far now14:40
OpenSourceplease link it again14:40
OpenSourcethank you14:40
akikOpenSource: https://docs.docker.com/build/building/base-images/14:40
akikgood luck14:40
OpenSourceThis is called talking in circles.14:41
OpenSourceYou could have simply answer my quetino with one sentence instead of beating around the bush14:41
akikOpenSource: btw focal is 20.04 so adjust it14:41
akikyea i just needed to say three times to read the page14:41
OpenSourceSo all you needed to say was, you can use debootstrap to fetch focal.14:42
OpenSourceI don't need to build a docker image.14:42
OpenSourceI just need debootsrap tog et focal.14:42
OpenSourceThat' sit.14:42
OpenSourceI'll try that now.14:42
OpenSourceYou did confuse me with your indirect answers.14:42
OpenSourcesorry not focal14:42
OpenSourcebut whatever is 1614:42
OpenSourcexenial14:43
OpenSourceSo are the repositories for xenial stil up?14:44
OpenSourcedebootstrap it fetching it apparently.14:44
OpenSourceI'm confused. Is debootstrap is fetching it, does it mean the repos are still up but it's just out of date so not supproted?14:45
OpenSourceMan this is a confusing distro. I'm still trying to make sense out of it.14:45
OpenSourceYup.14:49
jeremy31OpenSource: Maybe WineHQ can help https://forum.winehq.org/14:50
OpenSourceHey thanks14:51
OpenSourcethey're my next stop once I get the ubuntu stuff figured out14:51
OpenSource:)14:51

floownHow do you get examples into the man? You need to install an additional package, but what is it? Thanks16:00
rboxwhat do you mean "into the man"16:02
floownyes16:07
floownwhen I make a: man echo16:07
floownI have no example on bottom the man's page16:08
floownI remember I had some example, several years ago16:08
rboxsome things show exxmples some things dont16:08
floownOk, Bard has give me the solution16:09
floownsudo apt-get install man-pages-posix-examples16:09
alkisgHaha, tell the bard that package doesn't exist16:10
floownmanpages-posix - Manual pages about using POSIX system16:11
alkisgYeah these don't add examples to existing pages, they're documentation for posix16:12
floownOk16:12
rbox not sure what type of example one needs for echo...16:13
elias_aecho...16:18
JanCfloown: most of the time you will use the built-in echo command in your shell instead of the standalone echo binary from coreutils (or similar), so you should check e.g. "man sh", "man bash", or "info bash" instead16:32
JanC(they don't seem to have example either though)16:32
floownhttps://tldr.sh/ <------------- for man with examples16:38
JanCrbox: stuff like how it behaves with '-n' and/or '-e' maybe16:38
rboxwhat do you mean how it behvaes... it tells you what they do16:38
JanCsome people prefer examples  :)16:39
JanCfloown: those aren't really "manpages", but they are another documentation source indeed16:40
rboxan example that shows "echo -n hello"16:40
rbox?16:40
rboxyou can jut ype that and see what it does...16:40
JanCyou can install 'tldr' or 'tldr-py' to use them, I think16:40
JanCand tldr doesn't seem to have examples for echo either16:43
floownhttps://tldr.inbrowser.app/16:48

JanChm, the tldr packages in Ubuntu 22.04 seem to be broken...16:53
JanCoh, now it works, after running "tldr -u"...16:56

Ppfa23baI'm back17:15
floownJanC, yes17:21
noybmanwondering if someone can help out. I recently "sudo apt update && upgrade" and got the message that /boot was full. I got rid of an older kernel set of files, but it would not complete the initramfs (said it was dirty). Used a live disk, cleaned it, still couldn't boot. Using boot-repair, boot repair keeps canceling, "linux-generic purge canceled"17:26
noybmanits suggesting I create an esp partition, but I have never had one, and never needed one. I have used boot-repair in this situation many times. This is different for some reason17:28
JanCyou should always keep at least one known-to-work kernel17:29
noybmanI did, so I thought17:31
JanCthen can't you boot the older kernel?17:31
noybmannope, it was corrupted17:31
noybmanI naively deleted the good one17:32
JanCwhat if you boot a live system, chroot into the main system, and try to recreate the initramfs that way? (I assume boot repair does something similar, but maybe not with the same options?)17:37
JanCit seems like update-initramfs has options to delete & newly create one17:39
JanC(or maybe boot-repair has some way to change how it does that too?)17:40
noybmanyea, boot-repair has never failed me (until now), so I haven't had to try it manually. Guess now I do17:44
noybmanalthough.... considering the frustration I have had with ubuntu updates trashing my kernel... I'm weary of keeping a 512MB boot.17:45
floogyI got a new USB microscope. I can get only images with cheese yet (or Windows camera under win 10). But if I move the part under the microscope, the image isn't moving, but White scanlines, artifacts appear on the bottom of the image. Other cam software doesn't seem to detect the cam at all.18:34
floogyUnfortunately under windows the image is very dim and the app cannot alter brightness (nothing happens )18:36

JanCnot ll cameras use v4l19:00
JanCnot all *19:00
joseph1speaking of cameras -  JanC  - i have a set with its own router - is there a pgm that can handle that - without being connected to internet ?. thanks.19:02
JanCalso, cheese uses libcheese which uses gstreamer, so if it works in cheese it should probably work in all applications that use libcheese, and maybe even all applications that use gstreamer to access the video...19:03
joseph1can gstreamer handle - independent routers ?19:08
floogyOkay, I'll look into the installed packages. Maybe if I set the resolution for video lower? But I don't know, if I do that in another mode on the USB microscope, if it will affect the p mode as well on reset.19:08
floogyPC mode19:09
floogySo I guess I rather have the configure things in linux, not on the device itself.19:09
gordonjcpfloogy: what's the issue with it?19:10
floogyI'm not sure what's the culprit. The image is still and not moving as expected with a cam.19:11
gordonjcpfloogy: so, a webcam?19:12

BlackMagehello20:13
BlackMagecan a paste deleted from https://paste.ubuntu.com/ ?20:38
tomreynBlackMage: yes, if it needs to be. i think there's a manual process through the address given on the front page.20:41
tomreynBlackMage: you can also just 'hide' it when you login again.by visiting it and clicking the hide button20:43
floogyqvl4 and VLC are working somewhat. They capture dim images too. I'll look tomorrow further into this. I can adjust the image, but it's not as brilliant as on the devices screen itself on the particular mode.20:43
BlackMageyes it can hidden by me20:45
BlackMagea hidden paste can not be viewed by anyone anymore?20:58
tomreynBlackMage: i would not know this (I assume so), you would probably need to contact the given email address to determine this, unless it's discussed in a FAQ linked on the site.21:06
tom2024Hello21:16
tom2024There is one question that I can not find an answer to, it is related to DWM21:16
tom2024For example, there is a command that I execute in the terminal sudo ./test.sh (I run the script) everything works fine,21:16
tom2024how can I do the same in dwm, how correctly should I write the command in "config.h" so that when certain keys are pressed, it works in the terminal?21:17
kubast2Hey how can I use the livepatch feature? Say I want to update to a 5.19.0-42 kernel without rebooting, how do I go about it? Or it's not how the livepatch feature works?21:18

kerxphiloxAnyone know why when I vi into a file it prepends random characters to the first line of the file.  It's odd behaviour and I can't figure out how to troubleshoot and resolve this issue21:39
tomreynkerxphilox: run a file system (integrity) check21:41
kerxphiloxI'm running Ubuntu inside of WSL2.  I suspect that it has something to do with my terminal.  The actual characters are not in the file, when you cat the file it displays something else21:43
kerxphiloxIt's like vim is having issues with my terminal, but I'm not 100% sure21:43
tomreynhmm, can't think of anything else OTOH. there's probably #vim here or on OFTC.21:44
kerxphiloxOk, got it21:45
tomreynwhat was it then?21:45
kerxphilox#oftc is invite only channel, so I can't get into there21:45
tomreyni mean the oftc irc network at irc.oftc.net21:46
kerxphiloxOh! ok21:46
kerxphiloxlol, I've never heard of that network.  What's the difference21:46
tomreynit's just another network used my open source software projects.21:47
tomreynwhen you say "random characters", i assume it is never twice the same characters, and varying length, too?21:48
kerxphiloxit's random based on the file contents. when I open an empty file right now it will constantly add the characters 'mp' to the start of the file21:48
kerxphiloxI'm asking in #vim as you suggested21:49
tomreynvery well.21:50
kerxphiloxThere are a lot of layers here:  windows -> secureCRT -> wsl2 -> ubuntu -> vim21:56
kerxphiloxCould be that secureCRT is causing this issue as well, not sure21:57
jhutchinsOne should not mistake WSL for actual Linux.22:54
kerxphiloxI understand that.  I am trying to learn what WSL2 actually is and how it operates22:56
JanCkerxphilox: if it's just a couple characters it might be a BOM?23:20
JanChttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_order_mark23:20
JanCWindows uses those in Unicode text files because it uses UTF-16 instead of UTF-823:21
