RedPenIs it a good idea to full-format SSD's after using Linux on them, and or before re-installing over?21:25
RedPenOr can I just erase and partition over ?21:26
NewtonTrendyRedPen: it might be quicker to quick reformat than delete? not sure how it works if youre trying for speed, its certainly normal to reformal on reinstall21:30
NewtonTrendy*reformat21:30
RedPenok21:30
RedPenI just create new partitions with installers, is that the same as a quick format?21:30
NewtonTrendyim not completely sure but i think its the same as a quick one, because a full one writes over all the data21:31
NewtonTrendyif you need new partitions you can use partition tools, theres usually option to do a full reformat, i wouldnt bother because i have no secure data on it21:32
RedPenok, I think so too. I've never had an issue before.21:32
tomreynusually you don't need to do anything. but there can be situations where installers get irritated by existing on disk dstructures. if that's the case, run wipefs --all against the device (make double sure you hit the right device)21:34
Elw3Maybe here someone knows: Ive tried disabling showing grub at boot, edited etc/default/grub and set timeout to 0, run grub update, grub still there. Why is it not working?22:18
jeremy31Elw3: is it a dual boot?22:19
Elw3i think so22:20
jeremy31Elw3: windows or another linux OS?22:20
Elw3Brand new pc where ive run the installer on full auto, i believe it kept windows.22:21
jeremy31Elw3: the grub menu will show by default then22:22
Elw3...22:22
Elw3Yea but the question is, how to not.22:22
jeremy31Elw3: might take someone better than me with grub22:23
Elw3I already see that this behaviour is caused by a line in grub.cfg saying if timeout==0 then timeout =10. But this file is not supposed to be edited manually so i really need to find out where the right config file for this is.22:27
jeremy31Elw3: I think anything there gets ignored when os-prober finds the other OS22:36
Elw3I mean i could disable os prober then. But for ppl who desire multiboot and no grub, i mean you can still show it holding shift, this looks like a design flaw22:40
jeremy31Elw3: os-prober is disabled, but that might be for non UEFI22:49
Elw3Yee the installer gave a warning about this i remeber. grub update definetly run it tho.22:50
jeremy31Normal for UEFI with 2 OS on the same drive22:51
jeremy31Elw3: See https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2020/06/hide-grub-boot-menu-ubuntu-20-04-lts/  ignore the grub-customizer stuff and go to editing the /etc/default/grub22:52
Elw3Ah so "And set quick_boot=”0″." Is what i need apparently. Cool find, thanks.22:58
Elw3Also totally not an obvious option, quick boot to string of 0... makes no sense but okey22:58
jeremy31Elw3: like I said someone smarter than me with grub23:01
Elw3There is no smartness here, only better google skills.23:03
Elw3I have lost touch with how to research such problems in the recent years because search engines make less and less sense to me.23:04
jeremy31Elw3: yes and sometimes you have to wade through the garbage23:10
