NewbuntuHi There!00:26
xanguathat nick reminds me of something00:28
NewbuntuI am back on Ubuntu after a long time. I am wondering whether there is any good way now to install microsoft office 365 (without Virtualbox or virt-manager)?01:09
sarnoldis that the version of office that's a web app?01:12
leftyfbNewbuntu: use a web browser01:13
leftyfbNewbuntu: other than that, no01:13
NewbuntuNope, I want to use the real desktop app.01:14
NewbuntuNo way to do that?01:14
leftyfbNewbuntu: then you'll need to use Windows01:14
leftyfbnothing wrong with the web app01:14
sarnoldmaybe it'll run in wine or proton, but historically microsoft apps haven't done well with that, since wine implements mostly documented apis01:15
NewbuntuAnyone tried this? https://ruados.github.io/articles/2021-05/office365-wine01:15
leftyfbsarnold: office has historically run like crap in wine01:15
leftyfbNewbuntu: that's a 3rd party app not supported here. Good luck with it01:16
sarnoldleftyfb: I was hopeful that it was all web these days, like google docs01:16
leftyfbit is01:16
leftyfbbut Newbuntu refuses to use it01:16
sarnoldwikipedia suggests there's still stuff only implemented in desktop apps01:16
leftyfbit's been working fine for me for years01:16
sarnoldnice01:16
sarnoldNewbuntu: that guide looks like it was written by someone who knows what they're doing, but zounds, I'd rather run a VM01:17
NewbuntuGood for you. But, my problem is there are specific features in excel and powerpoint that I need to use.01:17
sarnoldor I guess you could spin up a windows instance on aws or azure or something01:17
NewbuntuI see01:19
pureosi tell you laguna...these sorry filthy dirty nigger trash and crooked nigger dick suckin JEW filth, those bastard enemies of anything HOLY including HOLY MATRIMONY of GREEK Doctors, they are all a bunch of corporate whores like the SHINRA, and other related filth, who desire nothing more than to rape and kill little girls, murder helpless women, and even AERIS just because her mother gave her HOLY01:50

xamindarim having the most annoying problem with snaps. Can some one offer advise? They are much slower than my native versions on my Arch install, and I mean a LOT slower. And they often lock up and can not be killed. Firefox snap just did this to me. Libreoffice ones take a good 10 seconds to open.03:59
xamindarThere must be some common issue causing this slowdown. It's becoming unbearable. Only seems to happen with snap apps.03:59
matsamanxamindar: snaps are idiotic, avoid them04:06
xamindarmatsaman: thanks, but ubuntu forces them on us, do they not? When I try to apt install a normal app sometimes I am told I have to install it through snaps04:07
matsamanUbuntu certainly pushes them04:07

xamindarright, but it has specific kernel versions it works with, otherwise it's in "reduced functionality mode" which means it doesn't actually do anything. I honestly haven't looked at if/which kernels it supports on debian04:22

xamindarmight be time to shop around04:22
matsamanwell, you can use any kernel with any distro anyway04:22
matsamanbut if it's not a pile of trash, it won't be hard to use it with a regular Debian kernel04:23
xamindarhmm, supports SLES. Been years since I have tried that one. Might be something to try.04:24

xamindarhas anyone been stuck with ksshaskpass?20:48
xamindarim trying to remove this crap but my terminal keeps setting the SSH_ASKPASS env var to it20:48
ash_mWhen I wake up my laptop, some applications (namely, the console and thunderbird) appear behind the launcher like this: https://i.stack.imgur.com/jvCc9.png20:48
xamindarany ideas where that is? I would assume removing the package would fix that, but nope20:49
ash_mlotuspsychje: I was told you'd probably know how to figure something like that out20:49
xamindarash_m: have you tried moving them out? click the title and drag over, see if that fixes it20:49
ash_mxamindar: I can just restore/re-maximize, but it keeps happening, every time I wake the laptop20:50
ash_mthat brings up a good fact though, the windows this happens to are maximized20:51
ash_mI have had this problem across 2 machines running 22.0420:51
ash_mthe common thread there is that they were both originally running windows20:51
sarnoldash_m: that's probably worth a bug report, 'ubuntu-bug gnome-shell' and fill out the forms as it goes20:54
sarnoldxamindar: I wonder if your terminal application is setting that variable before launching the shell?20:55

Eickmeyersarnold: Because the behavior is that the dock panel shouldn't allow windows to go underneath.20:58

sarnoldhttps://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock well it does look like a promising group of subscribers21:00

Eickmeyerash_m: Right, but the logs and everything that got uploaded probably was wrong.21:10
ash_mEickmeyer: yes, it probably was, I was too late reading back here21:11
sarnoldash_m: hopefully the ubuntu-bug command grabs whatever is useful for the package in question21:15
ash_mthere were a few other attachments automatically appended to it21:17
ash_mthe OOTB terminal is called "gnome-shell" right?21:17
ash_mI think it's probably not, and I goofed that.21:18
