[09:22] is unattended updates turned on in Ubuntu or Kubuntu? [09:27] historical I keep auto updates turned off as I have limited internet and like to choose when I update the system. But recently (past 1-2 weeks) Discover is throwing warnings that the lock file is locked and it looks to be the auto updater [09:28] It's still turned off in system settings, so why is it locking the file and installing packages without permission!? [12:22] Hi all [15:29] clivejo: unattended-upgrades is a systemd process and isn't controlled with system settings. "sudo systemctl disable unattended-upgrades.service" will stop it from running at boot. However, I do not recommend for two reasons: [15:30] 1) unattended-upgrades cleans old kernels from your /boot except the last two, and 2) it updates snaps for you. [15:32] Without that, 1) your /boot partition, if separate, can fill-up and cause big, big problems, and 2) snaps won't necessarily get updated because they can't run at the same time they're being updated. [15:33] I mean, you can do all of that with manual intervention, but you probably don't want that headache of system maintenance. [18:39] well it used to respect System Settings > Software Update > Update Software : Manually until recently [18:40] I have managed my kernels for years and don't need a "helper" doing it for me without my permission! [18:50] regarding snaps, don't use them and don't want to use them!
