en1gmai just install ubuntu 22.04.3 and did all updates in a dual boot windows 11 nvme m.2 drive with secure boot. everything is good. my question has to do with networking. when i run ubuntu 'sudp airmon-ng check kill' like 4x to kill all networking stuff and when i get done with it i do a 'sudo airmon-ng stop wlp5s0mon' how do i get my wireless networking back up? i just restart each time and that works fine but is there a better way?00:07
en1gmawhen i do the 'airmon-ng check kill' it kills "avahi-daemon". "NetworkManager", "wpa_supplicant" and another "avahi-daemon"00:15
jeremy31en1gma: check kali forums, I have no idea00:25
en1gmajeremy31 i also asked in #ubuntu. ill see what happens there00:25
jeremy31en1gma: this is #ubuntu00:26
en1gmaomg.00:31
leftyfben1gma: airmon-ng is not a supported application in ubuntu00:31
en1gmacrap. i thought you were in #aircrack-ng as i asked there too00:31
en1gmalol00:31
en1gmawell i hope someone can answer my question here because this is ubuntu related00:32
leftyfben1gma: no, it's airmon-ng related00:32
leftyfben1gma: don't run airmon-ng and you won't have an issue00:33
en1gmamy question is about network manager and bringing up the network00:33
leftyfbnm starts on boot00:33
en1gmaok maybe i need to reword it. i agree00:33
en1gmawhat is the command to restart network manager00:33
leftyfben1gma: why are you stopping network manager?00:34
en1gmaand all the processes i listed. "avahi-daemon". "NetworkManager", "wpa_supplicant" and another "avahi-daemon"00:34
en1gmawhat? we arent allowed to ask about network-manager now?00:34
leftyfbsudo systemctl restart network-manager00:34
leftyfbjust like every service on ubuntu00:34
en1gmathank-you. i need to learn those systemctl commands. ive used them on rpi3b before too so they must be common00:35
leftyfbit's part of systemd which is on most modern distro00:35
leftyfbs00:35
en1gmaim so used to ifonfig and iwconfig and those still00:36
jeremy31en1gma: or>  systemctl restart NetworkManager.service00:36
en1gmaim copying those commands down now.00:36
en1gmawish we had a right click create file instead of going to a terminal and typing 'touch etc'00:37
jeremy31en1gma: Run the file manager with sudo permission00:37
en1gmaO_o. from command line or properties on nautilus icon?00:38
en1gmalooks like command line probably00:38
jeremy31command line> sudo nautilus00:38
JanCairmon-ng can stop networkign but doesn't know how to bring it back up?  sounds like a bug...  :)00:39
jeremy31I don't see airmon-ng on Ubuntu repos00:39
WaVkeep in mind that running the file manager with sudo permissions is not recommended.00:39
WaVI don't think its going to let you do what you want anyway.00:40
leftyfbjeremy31: it's not00:40
en1gmai cant believe its that easy with running nautilus root. in the past it was always a longer command then that00:40
jeremy31en1gma: Might be a pkexec command for it00:41
en1gmajust copied all the commands down from non-root touch file00:41
en1gmajust in case.00:41
JanCmost file managers allow you to add plugins & custom actions/scripts; it would probably be better to use that if you need to do some actions as root regularly00:42
en1gmathe right click create file ive added in ubuntu file manager before i think00:42
en1gmaand adding seconds to the clock00:42
en1gmai got spoiled a little on 23.1000:43
en1gmaim probably going to install the amd binary driver in a bit. i know people say use the free version but the binary is needed for some of the things i do00:43
en1gmawhy dont it show up as an option in software update00:44
en1gmain the additional drivers00:44
en1gmai already added my key for secure boot. that went well when installing ubuntu00:44
en1gmathe desktop is a little glitchy00:45
en1gmai got it. i will do some reading its all good00:45
WaVYou can create a script for nautilus to create a text file if you want.00:47
WaVOr create templates which is probably easier.00:58

en1gmalost my text file with my commands i had made03:38
en1gmai think i installed the amd 5.7 binary driver thing but how do i know for sure because ubuntu 22.04.3 uses the HWE amd driver?03:38
en1gmaive done the commands like glxgears -B but im not sure how to tell if the driver im actually using is the proprietary driver or the ubuntu free driver03:39
en1gmait dont show up in the software update under additional drivers03:41
arraybolt3How do I increase swappiness? I'm using RAM compression in lieu of a swapfile and would like to start swapping into that space much sooner than my system usually would do so.03:41
guivercarraybolt3, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq#What_is_swappiness_and_how_do_I_change_it.3F  maybe helpful03:42
guivercen1gma, ubuntu will use HWE or GA depending on default of your install media; 22.04.3 as such will use 5.15 kernel if GA install media was used; or HWE if HWE install media was used; Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Desktop & later default to HWE, but Ubuntu Server & flavors differ03:43
arraybolt3guiverc: thanks03:44
bray90820What's the live password for kubuntu 23.1003:44
guivercbray90820, i didn't think it had one; (ie. just ENTER should log in),  but next i'd try kubuntu03:45
bray90820The computer went to sleep and now I need to login again kubuntu didn't work03:45
arraybolt3bray90820: Just hit "enter", an empty password should work.03:46
* guiverc has grabbed what I believe is a kubuntu mantic thumb-drive, will quickly test...03:46
* guiverc discovers i've overwritten it with ubuntu studio; no good.. but I believe it's '' (nothing)03:47
en1gmaguiverc i still have the install media but i cant remember what i picked. after i did the install i followed a guide to install the 5.7 amd driver but i think i should have installed the 20.xx driver maybe03:47
en1gmaim not sure which i should have installed. they were both sept 28th 202303:47
en1gmait was the amdgpu-install script from what looked like an ftp repo03:48
en1gmai did want rocm support though03:48
guivercen1gma, chances are if ubuntu desktop you'll have HWE kernel stack; however if your install media was before 20.04 (and release-upgraded) then install media really matters as it remains the same unless you change default03:51
en1gmamy media was 22.04.303:51
en1gmaamd64-desktop03:51
en1gmabut after that installed i then installed the driver from amd website. the amdgpu-install script for 5.703:51
guiverchwe is used (6.2 kernel) for Ubuntu Desktop & desktop flavors; Ubuntu Desktop media can (depending on your hardware) change default to OEM or GA kernel stack though only for specific hardware03:52
en1gmaamdgpu-install_5.7.00.48.50700-1_all.deb03:52
en1gmai have 6900xt03:52
guivercinstaller will examine hardware & change default if your hardware matches rules it has (ie. switching to OEM or GA stack if your hardware perfectly matches a special case)03:53
en1gmaahhh ok. so how do i see which one im on actually?03:54
en1gmawhat is GA?03:54
guivercGA is the most stable kernel stack; 5.15 for 22.04 being default for server installs, plus desktop flavors of 22.04 & 22.04.2 (but not flavors of 22.04.2 or later)..03:55
guiverchttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack03:55
en1gma'glxinfo -B' = "Device: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT (navi21, LLVM 16.0.6, DRM 3.54, 6.2.0-36-generic) (0x73bf)"03:55
guivercsorry 22.04 & 22.04.1 for flavors;  22.04.2 for flavors (& later) default to HWE03:55
guiverc5.19 is the 22.04.2 kernel at HWE, 6.2 for 22.04.3, 6.5 for 22.04.403:56
en1gmayea when i installed 22.04.3 i knew it had kernel 6.203:56
en1gma32.10 has kernel 6.503:57
en1gma23.10*03:57
en1gmadid i install the correct driver amgpu-install from amd? "amdgpu-install_5.7.00.48.50700-1_all.deb" or should have i used this "amdgpu-install_5.7.50701-1_all.deb"03:59
en1gmahttp://repo.radeon.com/amdgpu-install/03:59
en1gmathey have directories labeled "23.20.00.00.48" and "5.7.1" with the names i mentioned above. both are dated sept 28th 202304:00
en1gmawell the 23.20.. is dated sept 29th and the 5.7.1 is dated sept 26th04:00
en1gmais one for rocm and the other one dont have rocm support?04:01
en1gmaim pretty confused especially when it dont show up in software updater when the amd repos are added04:02
guivercsorry en1gma, I can't advice with drivers in relation to amd gpu's; I'd be guessing04:04

en1gmai guess i should try pyrit and then i will know if its all working the way its supposed too but i need to install so much because basically i have a fresh install (barely setup my settings) installed hexchat and the amdgpu-install thing04:11
en1gmapytorch*04:13
Bashing-omen1gma: Looks good to me -- on amdgpu driver :D04:20
en1gmabut is the amdgpu driver the same as the one that gets installed with a fresh install of ubuntu 22.04.3 or is it the binary proprietary driver from amd which is not free and dont get installed by ubuntu 22.0404:27
en1gmaare the same driver? im not sure because i didnt check the default driver thats installed with a fresh install of ubuntu 22.04.304:28
en1gmaim not sure what the default driver looks like with 'glxgears -B' for ubuntu 22.04.3 fresh install. i followed the guide to install the amdgpu-install too fast before checking04:29
en1gmai only know what driver looks like now after i did that amdgpu-install script so i cant compare04:29

johnfghi folks!16:53
johnfgI'm getting ready to install ubuntu on a new laptop.  I note in the install notes, "For this tutorial, we will use the Ubuntu 23.04 release which uses the new Ubuntu Desktop installer that will be included in all future Ubuntu releases."16:54
johnfgWell, 23.04 isn't available it doesn't look like, and 23.10 shows that it's using the 'legacy desktop installer'.16:55
johnfgI'm confused.16:55
johnfgOn one of my other machines, I'm running current, 22.04 with all updates, and, of course, I love it.  Was there a problem with the new installer?16:56
arraybolt3johnfg: where do you see the legacy installer showing up?17:29
arraybolt3Pretty sure the new one is available.17:29
toddcjohnfg: 24.04 is the latest long term support and recommeded version17:30
toddc23.10 is the latest but only has 9 months of support  testing version17:31
Eickmeyertoddc: Unless you're time-travelling, April 2024 (24.04) hasn't ocurred yet, so having a long-term support 24.04 isn't possible (unless you typo'd that).17:39
arraybolt3toddc: *22.04, 24.04 is in active (early) development.17:39
arraybolt3Eickmeyer is faster than me17:40
Eickmeyer23.10 is out of testing, so is a full-fledged release, don't call it a "testing version" please. :P17:41
johnfgtoddc: On ubuntu.com/download/desktop, they state that 22.04.3 is the latest LTS version.17:58
toddc23.10 is a current release but not a LTS and for new user 22.04 LTS is my recommeded version based on 12 years of installfests  Better?17:58
toddcjohnfg: yes17:58
johnfgSo, just to be sure, there is no 24.04 available yet, right?17:59
toddccorrect17:59
toddchttps://ubuntu.com/tutorials/install-ubuntu-desktop#1-overview17:59
toddcubuntu has a great step by step guide above18:00
toddcand feel free to ask any questions18:00
johnfgWhat about my question about the new vs. the legacy installer?18:01
johnfgOn that page it said that 23.04 had the new installer that would be used on all future releases, but 23.10 has the legacy installer.18:02
kopachkenames18:02
toddcjohnfg: both work but use the one built into the version you are goind to work with18:02
toddcgoing18:03
toddcthere are a few differnt options for advanced users but assuming your this is your first ubuntu install stick to defaults18:04
