arraybolt3Hey, I have a question related to Matrix moderation that I would like to ask (and possibly bring this to the ops team's attention assuming it's not already on your radar).17:26
arraybolt3Currently it seems that many of the Ubuntu rooms on Matrix (#support:ubuntu.com for instance) are being transferred to the control of the Ubuntu project and made into official rooms.17:26
arraybolt3I was made a moderator of the room that is now #support:ubuntu.com back when it was still #ubuntu:matrix.org (and later #ubuntu:xentonix.net IIUC), and still have those privileges there.17:27
arraybolt3However, as I understand it, the Matrix "officialization" (or whatever it's called) is being done in cooperation with the IRC ops team, which I *think* means the current IRC ops team will probably be taking control of that room once everything's fully ironed out.17:27
arraybolt3I enjoy helping moderate the Matrix room for Ubuntu support at the moment, and have helped clean up multiple spam events, banned trolls, and recently helped keep the channel in a state of sanity during a two-day long attack by one spammer/troll. I would like to remain a moderator of the Ubuntu Matrix room even after this transition is complete.17:29
arraybolt3Is there anything in particular I need to do now to make that happen? Or should I just wait and see what happens, and we'll figure this part out later?17:29
Eickmeyerarraybolt3: This is at the CC level currently, so patience please.18:24
arraybolt3Sure thing. If that means I should leave the channel since this will take a while, I'm happy to.18:28
Eickmeyerarraybolt3: Yeah, this is going to be a 6+ month thing.18:28
arraybolt3kk, makes sense.18:28
Unit193Ah, it is?  OK then.21:34
EickmeyerUnit193: Yeah, things are moving slowly, unless you have more information. Per the discourse post, the Matrix instance is only in a test phase and won't even be solidified until after 24.04's release.21:53
Unit193I don't have more information, I have less. :P21:53
EickmeyerBut yes, pending CC approval, it looks like all official Ubuntu communication channels will move to a Canonical-hosted Matrix instance. https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/modern-communication-platforms-matrix-testing/4031321:56
Unit193Unfortunate, but such is life.21:59
Unit193I imagine they'll be taking a more active role in managing that then.22:00
EickmeyerThey're hoping for 1:1 governance, meaning the IRCC would be in charge of that and the ops team would move over to it.22:12
Unit193We plan on maintaining IRC as an alternate medium, aka as the forums are to Discourse.22:13
EickmeyerI'm surprised you hadn't heard of this. Mauro had been emailing the IRCC.22:18
Unit193He's emailed, wanted to set up a call.22:18
Unit193With the spread of timezones and whatnot, calls are rather hard to do.  It never ended up happening.22:20
EickmeyerHe's at least been in contact with sarnold.22:20
Unit193Yeah.22:21
Unit193(I mean that's not really new news, just they're moving along with it.  Which was expected.)22:23
EickmeyerI'd suggest emailing Mauro. His intention wasn't to take-over and he wanted input from the entire IRCC. I knew you would object, but I didn't know whether or not you had raised your concerns.22:24
Unit193I mean, "object" is a strong term, he can do whatever he likes.  I wouldn't consider it a "take over" either, just launching (or making it official rather) on another platform.  Sure I see it as unfortunate, but no hard feelings.22:26
Unit193Last we talked, that was the general view of the IRCC.22:28
EickmeyerNot really. One of my biggest cautions at the time it was proposed was the governance issue, and he has been using me as an advisor (CC emeritus and all) ever since. It's not set-in-stone yet since it's ultimately up to the CC, and those discussions are underway.22:29
EickmeyerCanonical is certainly moving to Matrix, but it's up to the CC to move to Ubuntu to Matrix.22:30
Unit193Eh, it's what they want so eventually it'll happen.22:30
Unit193Just gonna suck that I'll lose contact with the release team. :P22:33
EickmeyerThat sounds like a refusal to move to Matrix which sounds an awful lot like an objection, so I don't think it's a strong term in this case. Correct me if I'm wrong.22:43
Unit193...But it's not, I'd prefer if you didn't color it to others like that.  If it can't be helped, then perhaps they should directly communicate with me instead.22:45
EickmeyerI've already messaged Mauro to reach out to you.22:49
EickmeyerBTW, I'm trying to remain neutral on all of this, not trying to color aything to anybody. :)22:50
Unit193Oh well.. I mean, you've kinda made your opinion on the whole medium used quite clear in the past. :P22:52
EickmeyerI have, but the governance issue is also a big thing.22:53
Unit193Sure is, migration is quite the task and affects years in the future.22:54
Unit193Gist is: No as IRCC I don't have any objections, though of course as IRCC I see the move away from IRC as unfortunate.  On a personal, non IRCC note, I don't plan to move on over.22:58
