guivercAny ideas given this... I suffered a power outage & Ubuntu noble system went down... On power return I `fsck` before I boot & thus any fs issues were fixed.. I boot & no longer get to DM to even let me login..  Any clues as to what my problem could be (I'm sure it's something in $HOME but what??)08:19
guiverc(I've re-installed non-destructively & get same issue; ubuntu desktop, xubuntu & lubuntu.. if I re-install & format partition all is good, so system is okay, but re-use my $HOME & no DM appears (gdm, lightdm & sddm same issue given I've installed lubuntu/xubuntu/ubuntu-desktop..; both noble & jammy dailies)08:20
Bashing-omguiverc: graphic's driver is one possible cause - sudo lshw -C display ; less /var/log/gpu-manager.log .08:31
guivercan install of lubuntu works when without my /home, but fails when using my /home (I'm proposing; different dailes were used but I doubt that makes a difference) thus to me it's something in $HOME that corrupts the DM  (since I'm not asked to gui login with xubuntu/ubuntu or lubuntu???)08:35
guiverci can't see how graphic issue would be at play, unless my hardware is flaky  (I can't rule that out... five install fails re-using /home, an install not using it works??)08:36
guiverci'll add /home on the 'working' install next & reboot... that'll either 'prove' my thinking, or confound me!08:37
guiverci just added /home & rebooted - login & all looks good... i'm missing something & have no idea what it is... maybe it's something like graphics??   I may re-install again tomorrow & compare (if it fails)...  (as I set my systems as dual boot, I always have two areas to install into!)08:42
guivercthanks Bashing-om ; I think I've busted my hypothesis 08:43
Bashing-omguiverc: Another thought - startup scripts for the display messed up -  .xsession ??08:46
guivercgood thought; alas a somewhat new system & I don't make any such changes... though given install was noble; something done on a recent upgrade?? but in /home I suspect not (unless I missed something in my many installs)08:47
Bashing-omguiverc: same old home in each new install ?08:49
guivercmy fixation on /home though is likely faulty... the install today probably foramtted partition; prior installs did not; thus maybe corrupt fs unfixed by my fscks???08:49
guivercthe failed installs (xubuntu/lubuntu/ubuntu-destkop noble + lubuntu jammy) all re-used /home & failed... 08:49
guiverci could try no-format of my other / & re-use of /home; then re-try of / (with format) & re-use /home; if first fails but second works it'll be fs issue on first /  08:51
guiverc(my other / ; meaning other partition given my always setting up dual boot; shared /home on this box)08:52
Bashing-omguiverc: lightdm - my notes - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2210188 <- Can no longer log on.08:54
arraybolt3I had login issues due to a filesystem being oddly mounted read-only.08:55
arraybolt3guiverc: ^08:55
arraybolt3Doing a remount as read/write made the display manager almost immediately pop up08:56
guivercnone of the greeters were even showing here.. so wasn't login loop.. if it was as simple as RO mount (due to issues) & I missed that, I'd be real annoyed at myself (but I know I booted live more than once & fsck between installs; the /home is large & thus took awhile)08:56
arraybolt3Is fstab wrong or corrupt by any chance?08:56
guivercbut I cannot rule out me making a mistake... (box is used as media player, not intended to be used with keyboard comfortably so change of error is higher!)08:57
arraybolt3I ran into my issues on a Debian system where I forgot to make fstab (installed it with debootstrap and manual hacking)08:57
guivercfstab would have been created by calamares (lubuntu), ubuntu-desktop-installer (ubuntu desktop) & ubiquity (xubuntu) so I doubt its fstab issue;  fs issue though would be consistent08:58
guiverc(fs issue being my mistake as I see it, am just sure I checked for it)08:58
arraybolt3hmm. If it ends up being not an FS issue, let me know, since then I have something to study08:58
guivercgiven issue was created by power outage.. fs issue to me could have been expected (why I booted live before normal boot; out of habit)08:59
guiverci filed a bug report on install failures.. but marked that incomplete when today's install worked (not re-using my /home)09:00
guivercthanks for link Bashing-om (been reading)09:02
Bashing-omguiverc: This issue may take a while - real late here and I am off to bed - will catch up with you tomorrow time.09:04
guivercthanks Bashing-om ...  I'm just happy I have a working system now (after days of it not getting to DM & thus no GUI)09:04
guivercI'll update the files on the home (it's days behind now) then do re-install testing (tomorrow probably for me) on my other system partition..09:05
Bashing-omguiverc: Last couple of years I too GUI spoiled :P09:05
guiverc:)09:05
guivercOur GNU/Linux systems are wonderul, alas so complex they can be confusing at times, but regardless they're wonderful !09:06
guivercNight Bashing-om , sleep well09:07
Bashing-omwe discuss DM starting tomorrow :D09:07
