en1gmaim thinking about partition my single 1TB m.2 so i can install ubuntu 24.04 daily fresh but than i was thinking do i need to install ubuntu 22.04.3 lts then just do the system-upgrade to 24.04 or a fresh install03:52
en1gmaor should it not be the ubuntu 24.04 daily and just the ubuntu 24.04 off the ubuntu website?03:53
en1gmawhat is the best way to install ubuntu 24.04 when you dont have a nix installed yet03:53
lotuspsychjeen1gma: its reccomended to help testing devel releases fresh/daily03:54
lotuspsychjeto rule out issues/bugs from a previous release03:54
lotuspsychjeunless someone wants to test the upgrading process specificly03:55
lotuspsychjeand 22.04 to 24.04 upgrade is still closed for upgrading anyway03:56
en1gmalotuspsychje yea but do i do an actual fresh install with a daily on a windows 11 dual boot?03:56
en1gmaahhh. its just getting so close i was wondering about that03:56
lotuspsychjethats the users choice en1gma 03:56
lotuspsychjeup to you what kind of layout you want to install03:57
en1gmano recommendations? any problems with bootloader if i do the daily over the non daily on a dual boot?03:57
lotuspsychjewe got testers of all kinds physical and virtual VM03:57
en1gmaon the 1TB i was just going to shring it to 1/2 the size. so 450GB for windows and 450GB for unbuntu 24.04 but wasnt sure on the actual partition layout. i have a YT video up right now on pause where the guy has set aside 200GB and hes getting ready to do the partition layout for / , swap and /boot i think03:58
lotuspsychjeif you have an existing 22.04 dualboot, you can just install 24.04 just the same way you did03:59
en1gmaive installed 24.04 several times already but just wanted to make sure the grub wasnt broke in the daily03:59
en1gmanope. just shrank the 950GB partition in windows with disk management and didnt even create a filesystem on it yet04:00
lotuspsychjethe installer will prob even suggest you what to do with previous install/partition04:00
en1gmawas going to let ubuntu 24.04 do that04:00
en1gmaits blank04:00
en1gmai think i will make sure its gpt though. forgot that04:00
lotuspsychjedont think there are currently known bugs on grub04:00
lotuspsychjemake backups before you play :p04:01
en1gmayep its guid gpt04:01
en1gmaok cool. i grabbing 24.04 daily amd64-desktop then 04:01
en1gmathanks04:01
lotuspsychjegood luck!04:01
en1gmasee you after a bit. got to make some food and start the download04:01
lotuspsychjethere was a subiquity bug before aborting the installer, bug i think its solved by now04:02
en1gmafresh image was put up today. cool04:02
lotuspsychjeyeah hence the name daily04:02
en1gmasometimes those dailys arent dailys though04:02
en1gmai see lots of 2 and 3 days back quite often04:03
en1gmasometimes a little longer too04:03
en1gmais that just the repo not updating i mean does ubuntu daily actually upload images every single day no matter what?04:03
ravageif the build fails there is no build04:17
ravageor maybe there were just no changes at all. i dont know if that would also not trigger a daily04:18
en1gmaright on04:21
johnjohn101en1gma: if you do updates, you get to the daily no mater which .iso you download04:21
en1gmatrue true. i should probably start with the 24.04 and update from there but too late i downloaded the daily and about ready to write it right now. is fat32 and iso the best way to do it?04:23
lotuspsychjeim using the ubuntu installer maker always04:24
lotuspsychjefor ubuntu flavours04:24
en1gmadont that maker make it mbr and not gpt by default?04:24
lotuspsychjeand ventoy for windows iso's04:24
johnjohn101en1gma:  just dd to usbkey..  you should just start with the most recent .iso, not much has changed04:25
ravageif you want to boot the iso and do the installation you can open "startup disk creator" in ubuntu and write it to a flash drive04:25
en1gmayea but for secure boot to work correctly i thought even the media has to be GPT format for it not to break secure boot with uefi 04:26
ravagedoes not matter04:26
en1gmai use DD with kali-linux. it dont like iso method04:26
ravagewhatever the iso method is04:26
en1gmafrom within windows 11 and rufus04:26
ravagebut dd works04:27
johnjohn101rufus works04:27
en1gmathe only issue i ever have with dd is i have to use diskparted to get the usb drive back. disk management wont do it04:27
ravagebest results are from etcher.04:27
johnjohn101ravage: i've been using dd for years. 04:27
en1gmanow that i figured that out its a breeze04:27
ravagesuccess rate is at about 100%04:28
ravage(for windows)04:28
en1gmacan dd be used to back a whole drive up and restore with dual boot? kind of like acronis image?04:28
en1gmaahhh04:28
en1gmaive only used dd from windows a few times and almost always with kali04:29
en1gmaubuntu i usually do use iso but always wondered if it would be better to select dd04:29
en1gmai think i will do dd right now04:29
en1gmathanks04:29
johnjohn101i use rufus with windows and dd from ubuntu04:29
en1gmaohh. dd scares me from within ubuntu/linux :)04:30
en1gmaall them byte secotrs and other parameters you have to use04:30
johnjohn101:(04:30
johnjohn101i copy a dd command from the internet04:31
en1gmai need a gui for dd if im in ubuntu :) i dont even like copy and pasting the dd command04:31
en1gmayep yep but that scares me some times because if they are using an older hdd and you using a m.2 nvme i dont know what happens04:31
johnjohn101use rufus on windows then. you'll be good to go04:32
en1gmathose byte sectors and i forget the other parameters 04:32
en1gmayep yep. i just get used to diskparted. its not bad04:32
en1gmai use gparted or disks in ubuntu04:32
en1gma99% of the time04:32
en1gmadisks is pretty good04:33
en1gmabbiab. just wrote and i ate so time to install :)04:38
lotuspsychjethe firmware updater app stalls on me currently04:39
lotuspsychjecan anyone reproduce that?04:39
lotuspsychjedec 16 05:40:22 r00tb0x firmware-updater.firmware-updater-app[164860]: libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found04:40
lotuspsychjedec 16 05:40:22 r00tb0x firmware-update[164860]: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" 04:42
en1gmathe daily desktop for noble wouldnt let me install. after the "try ubuntu" the next box that pops up is all white05:09
en1gmadloading 12-14-2023 amd64 desktop now05:09
lotuspsychjeprob a secureboot issue en1gma 05:10
en1gmagrrr not a good way to start off :) i did try the safe graphics mode and it was the same thing but big white box.05:10
en1gmaive used 24.04 with secure boot before05:10
en1gmano issues05:10
en1gmai never installed 24.04 but i booted the live or try ubuntu many times. last time was a week or 2 ago though05:11
en1gmahow do you get older dailys? i went up to a parent folder but it only showed 12-14-202305:11
en1gmai bet 12-14-2023 will have same problem but who knows. will try it and if it dont work ill probably start looking for older releases. the only problem i still see that i cannot belive is not fixed in all the 22.04, 23.10 and 24.04 (all flavors i checked) is that they still cant get me into 4k@60hz on the try ubuntus. if i install its fine. where debian live gets 4k@60hz right away with 05:14
en1gmano problems. i mean it defaults the desktop at 4k@30hz but you can change it to 4k@60hz in the drop down menu05:14
en1gmawhere none of the ubuntus have that. drop down menu = 30hz and less05:15
en1gmaunless you actually install. still cant believe thats not fixed. you know thats a type in there somewhere.05:15
en1gmaor just something really really small05:15
en1gmawriting ubuntu 24.04 (12-14-2023) now. will try again soon05:17
en1gmaim pretty close to installing debian but i hanging in there for ubuntu05:19
en1gmayea the live version shouldnt matter with secure boot at all while in that mode.05:20
en1gmaright after i press F11 to select my ubuntu usb stick at boot time the next screen where you select try ubuntu, try ubuntu with safe graphics that screens fine. its the next screen thats a white box with the ubuntu desktop showing. i did X out the installer box and clicked the desktop icon to start another install but same thing. just a white box05:21
en1gmaok finished writing. probably be back in a bit if it dont let me install05:23
en1gmayep that didnt work either. ok i need a ubuntu 24.04 daily for amd64-desktop thats about 2 weeks old. where can i get one :)05:26
en1gmagonna try ubuntu daily 24.04 (mate)05:29
en1gmaone last try :)05:32
en1gmaactually i not doing that. ill just install ubuntu 22.04 and do updates. dont got time to be doing this. i should be installed by now. ok no ubuntu-next for me sorry guys05:38
lotuspsychjelol05:42
