xu-irc67w | my xubuntu laptop keeps crashing, i'm pretty sure the culprit is discord | 03:05 |
---|---|---|
xu-irc67w | i've tried using the official program, webcord, and another one that adds audio streaming functionality and even the website itself | 03:05 |
xu-irc67w | they all crash my system | 03:05 |
xu-irc67w | anyone else having a similar problem? | 03:05 |
xu-irc67w | it's crashing so hard i'm getting logged out of my system | 03:09 |
xu-irc67w | sometimes it totally reboots | 03:09 |
xu-irc67w | it keeps saying a system problem was detecting but it doesn't give specifics | 03:10 |
xu-irc67w | wat do | 03:10 |
tomreyn | xu-irc67w: you could look at your logs, whic are accessible with the journalctl command | 03:22 |
xu-irc67w | i'm very bad at the command line | 03:23 |
tomreyn | there's a GUI application for it for at least gnome, too, called 'Logs' | 03:23 |
tomreyn | but debugging things usually involves learning your way around the shell, at least some basics. | 03:24 |
xu-irc67w | there are at least twelve errors listed here | 03:26 |
xu-irc67w | they are in the "important" category | 03:26 |
xu-irc67w | gkr-pam: unable to locate daemon control file | 03:27 |
xu-irc67w | there are so damn many | 03:30 |
xu-irc67w | this is gonna take some time | 03:30 |
tomreyn | here's a shortcut: journalctl -b -p4 | nc termbin.com 9999 | 03:32 |
xu-irc67w | https://termbin.com/2zrs | 03:33 |
tomreyn | no mention of discord. maybe you need to reduce the log message filtering to messages of any priority (omit -p4). | 03:39 |
xu-irc67w | i ommitted -p4 and it didn't give me a link | 03:40 |
tomreyn | other than that, there seems to be some issue with your bios rgearding graphics, with your amd graphics driver(s) and several with skype | 03:41 |
xu-irc67w | hmm | 03:41 |
xu-irc67w | the computer is pretty damn new | 03:41 |
xu-irc67w | it's a lenovo ideapad | 03:41 |
xu-irc67w | so that's probably why | 03:41 |
tomreyn | couldbe just too new | 03:41 |
xu-irc67w | yes that's what i'm finding | 03:41 |
xu-irc67w | i'm contemplating shrinking the windows partition on my surface pro 7 and installing xubuntu in the unallocated space | 03:42 |
tomreyn | oh i think we already discussed this system the other day | 03:42 |
xu-irc67w | yes that's right | 03:42 |
xu-irc67w | i have a solution for the audio problem, (USB mic) but it's still wildly unstable | 03:42 |
xu-irc67w | i'm going to let this thing run for a while without discord, see if it's skype doing it | 03:43 |
xu-irc67w | how would a microsoft surface pro 7 do with xubuntu? | 03:43 |
xu-irc67w | it's old enough that i would think it would have driver support | 03:43 |
tomreyn | i would not know. try searching the web for it. | 03:44 |
xu-irc67w | ok i'll do some digging | 03:44 |
xu-irc67w | i could also always make a live usb install and test it that way | 03:44 |
tomreyn | as long as it can boot from that, sure | 03:45 |
xu-irc67w | based on what i've seen xubuntu can handle hopping from system unit to system unit | 03:45 |
xu-irc67w | i was going to install it to the sd card but the slot isn't bootable sadly | 03:45 |
tomreyn | a common bios limitation | 03:45 |
xu-irc67w | bit sad innit | 03:46 |
tomreyn | yes, better buy well done firmware if you can tell how - which isn't that easy | 03:46 |
xu-irc67w | yeah the capability of the bios isn't generally listed in the specs | 03:47 |
xu-irc67w | not as far as i can tell | 03:47 |
tomreyn | https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface discusses its bios and restrictions | 03:48 |
xu-irc67w | oh cool | 03:48 |
tomreyn | there's also a channel dedicated to this hardware here (as is indicated there) | 03:48 |
tomreyn | #linux-surface | 03:49 |
tomreyn | the fact that there is a custom kernel probably means you won't be able to enjoy it that much. | 03:49 |
xu-irc67w | yeah this doesn't seem viable | 03:49 |
xu-irc67w | damn | 03:49 |
tomreyn | https://www.linux.org/threads/ubuntu-22-04-on-surface-pro-7.43071/ | 03:50 |
tomreyn | https://devicetests.com/microsoft-surface-pro-7-ubuntu-20-04-compatibility | 03:50 |
tomreyn | bbl | 03:51 |
xu-irc67w | yeah the more i read the less i want to do it now | 03:51 |
xu-irc67w | it's pretty involved, i guess my heart isn't in it right now too much has gone wrong recently | 03:52 |
xu-irc67w | how would i find the cause of the last system crash? | 03:52 |
xu-irc67w | it booted me to the login screen so there must be some way to find that info | 03:52 |
xu-irc67w | i'd like to at least know what the cause was | 03:53 |
Bashing-om | xu-irc67w: Anything in /var/crash/ directory ? | 03:58 |
xu-irc67w | yes | 03:59 |
xu-irc67w | but nothing from today | 03:59 |
xu-irc67w | which is strange | 03:59 |
=== guiverc2 is now known as guiverc | ||
xu-irc67w | it's obviously crashed at least three times today but it returns no errors | 04:30 |
xu-irc67w | no crash logs from today at all | 04:30 |
Bashing-om | xu-irc67w: dmesg ; /var/log/syslog ? | 04:38 |
xu-irc67w | is there a graphical way to read syslog? | 04:51 |
Bashing-om | xu-irc67w: Long time back I know there was a GUI reder - Now-a-days I do not know of one; Mostly I am of a text user interface - have not given a GUI means a thought. | 04:54 |
xu-irc67w | so i'm kind of stuck then | 05:06 |
xu-irc67w | i just don't have the energy to try to figure out the command line for this right now | 05:07 |
xu-irc67w | i guess until things are fixed i'm using my surface for discord | 05:07 |
Bashing-om | xu-irc67w: are the log files so large your file manager can not load ? - thgen there is the tool "less". | 05:08 |
xu-irc67w | holy crap syslog.1 is 138 MiB | 05:17 |
xu-irc67w | how are these things handled? are all the syslogs for each day combined into a single master file or something? | 05:17 |
Bashing-om | xu-irc67w: Default ? logs are compressed when a certain size is reached - then log-rotate removes older compressed logs. | 05:22 |
opi | Hy, need Help, in German at the best, Bluetooth doesn't find my Headset | 10:10 |
opi | installed Bluetooth Adapter and Mananger, ToolBLEx | 10:13 |
chibcha | hello | 13:37 |
torv | xu-irc67w: I'd guess "amdgpu" errors seem the most severe based on your logs. Maybe just related to suspend/hibernate--you could try disabling that. Again such device issues likely got fixed with later kernel/firmware versions--try the recent live system to compare. Also loads of clogging by Skype--i'd first remove Skype and observe. | 15:34 |
xu-irc67w | damn i use skype pretty heavily | 17:15 |
xu-irc67w | that's a problem | 17:15 |
xu-irc67w | this install was done with brand new install media as well | 17:17 |
diogenes_Vx15 | xu-irc67w, why don't you just use web skype? | 17:54 |
