KartagisI have a problem. I have installed Ubuntu desktop in UTM on Mac. However, the grub menu stayed the same. How can I at least boot to a specific option?09:25
CosmicDJKartagis: maybe UTM is still booting from the ubuntu install iso? did you try "ejecting" the iso/cdrom?09:29
KartagisCosmicDJ: yes I did, it then says "Not found" or something like that.09:30
CosmicDJKartagis: maybe follow the guide closely? https://docs.getutm.app/guides/ubuntu/09:30
Kartagisoh, I probably need to stop the VM to umount the ISO09:34
rainfly\09:36
KartagisCosmicDJ: yes, I did need to do that. I stopped the VM and ejected the ISO.09:39

Haris_hello all10:46
Haris_I'm on 20.x LTS. I'm trying to customize path for mysql server. on configuration, and subsequent mysqld start, it fails. then when I run mysqld --initialize it gives me a stupid error ===> mysqld: Can't create directory '/mnt/custom/path/' (OS errno 13 - Permission denied) <=== I'm running all of this as root on this instance10:48
Haris_instance = VM10:48
Haris_Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS. codename: focal10:49
ravageThe MySQLd process will still use the user defined in the configuration 10:49
ravageThe default user is mysql10:50
ravageSo make sure that user can write there10:50
Haris_I had to delete that folder b/c mysqld --initialize gives me the error that folder already exists10:51
Haris_mysqld: Can't create directory '/mnt/custom/path/' (OS errno 17 - File exists)10:51
Haris_(2) I'v had to put my custom config in /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/mysqld.conf. Is this where I customize my.cnf role config file for it?10:52
Haris_Is there a way to initialize mysql w/ a custom path on focal?10:58
Haris_user mysql exists. I already created the folder and applied the ownership/permissions. then I had to delete it when I got this error10:59
Haris_Is mysql config hard-coded somewhere, where I have to adapt to make it work with custom path on focal?11:00
Haris_I can see it in audit log apparmor is denying mysql for this11:01
Haris_how to adapt apparmor to make mysqld work with custom datadir path? I added custom paths in apprmor. reloaded two times. restarted apparmor once. still I get permission denied on mysqld --initialize11:08
Haris_guys .. anyone around? I can't proceed with my work b/c of this11:21
wyrethere is no linux-image pacakges in focal-backports? https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=focal-backports&searchon=names&keywords=linux-image11:21
CosmicDJwyre: why should there be one?11:26
Haris_what config file does mysql client use on focal?11:36
Haris_got mysqld working with custom datadir11:36
tomreynHaris_: man mysql   should tell11:41
Haris_It may. reading it. What's the default for ubuntu/focal as an OS/platform?11:42
tomreynin the past, the default per user mysql client configuration location was ~/.my.cnf (if I remember correctly).11:43
tomreyndefaults can change, but i assume this one has not11:44
Haris_nothing in /etc/default for mysql server11:45
Haris_or client11:45
tomreyni wouldn't expect anything there11:45
Haris_when I run ===> mysql -u root -p <=== I get the error ===> mysql: [ERROR] unknown variable 'datadir=/mnt/custom/mysql/path'.11:47
Haris_where is it getting this from11:47
tomreynthere should just be /etc/mysql and the per user location. potentially, if you modified things a lot, mysqld might also be looking in the database storage directory (/var/lib/mysql by default)11:47
Haris_its giving me my custom configured path11:48
tomreynso you configured it, so you'll know where it gets it from?11:48
tomreynyou can always use strace to see which file system paths a given software accesses (or tries to access).11:50
tomreynchanging the default mysql data directory is probably somewhat involved due to apparmor and possibly other reasons. so if you don't strictly have to, don't. certainly someone will already have done so, and listed the needed steps, though.11:51
Haris_ok. I commented my config in /etc/mysql/conf.d/mysql.conf11:52
Haris_now it gives me the password prompt. but gives me the error that it can't connect to mysql using the socket file on the custom datadir path11:52
Haris_we almost never use the default datadir path. untill its an inconsequential implementation. I'm used CentOS. I don't have to worry about these basic things there. it initilizes mysqld with custom datadir path with no further kinks required11:55
rainflyWhat's the biggest offense for Ubuntu users?11:56
Haris_mentioning CentOS?11:58

CosmicDJtmm88: you really expect some help with that attitude?13:23
BluesKajHi all13:30
tomreyntmm88: if you can share some terminal output or logs of your attempts to install the software (after updating apt's cache) on a pastebin, i bet someone over here could help.13:37
tomreynif you need help with doing this, please just ask, too.13:37
tomreynrainfly: by ".iso copy", do you mean a bootable iso? and what's your goal there?13:39
tomreyn(i mean; why do you need this?)13:40
rainflyI have SD card with entrire system on it. I want to create .iso backup but im not sure if it's gonna work if its encrypted.13:45
rainflyThe main purpose of the backup is to get the previous state of the machine13:45
rainflyMy apologies if my question was not so precise13:46
tomreynhaving the entire system on an sd card isn't a great setup, because this is rather short-lived / unreliable storage. are you using hardware which can only use an sdcard for storage?13:47
tomreynfull disk encryption with many writes to the crypto container on an sdcard would be an especially bad idea, i'm afraid, because the crypto container will increase the amount of writes (if not *that* much)13:48
koomwhat kind of crypto container?13:50
Psil0rainfly, i am guessing its for raspberry pi?13:50
Psil0sd card?13:50
rainflyI mean, it's a small computer (like raspberryPI, but not exactly)13:50
tomreynrainfly: you can create an image of the sdcard and store that on different storage media. it will be larger than a file-system backup, that, too, can be encrypted.13:50
rainflyTBH it doesn't have to be encrypted, but my system currently is.13:51
rainflyI can operate it easily but what's gonna happen if i just use some tool to backup it13:51
Psil0i am just interested why its encrypted usually those systems cannot handle encryption maybe i am wrong13:51
Psil0you can encrpyt raspbian?13:51
rainflyIdk, my friend told me that he needs some kind of point to go back. Its Ubuntu with ROS.13:52
tomreynrainfly: i just through about this more. it may indeed be the most simple solution to just create a 1-to-1 image of the sd card if it's small enough. as long as you just read but not restore it, casing little stress to the sd card, that should be fine. it should also be reasonably fast if the sd card isn't that large. it will still be slower than a proper backup, plus you can't create it while the system is running.13:57
tomreyncasing -> causing (just)13:57
rainflyThanks, I will try to work on it13:58
tomreynso, for example, if you want to do nightly image dumps of the sd card in a different computer, this could be an option.13:58
tomreynpersonally, i'd prefer the online backup approach.13:58
tomreyn!backup13:58
ubottuThere are many ways to back your system up. Here's a few: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DuplicityBackupHowto , https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HomeUserBackup , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MondoMindi - See also !sbackup, !borg, and !cloning13:58
tomreyni'd recommend borg or restic13:59
tomreynrainfly: if your SoC provides an USB or a SATA bus, you should prefer those and use a better storage media (such as a modern SSD) on it.14:02
rainflyThe SD card was a prototype. I know that this is not the best way to keep your system running.14:05
plundraWhere is the repo for the cloud-image build process? The jammy images >= 20240117 has added a sshd_config.d/10-cloudimg-settings.conf disabling PasswordAuthentication, so doing ssh_pwauth: true in cloud-init, that creates 50-cloud-init.conf with PasswordAuthentication=yes no longer works.14:07

alcostaI would like to explain better my problem!17:04
EriC^^ok, go for it17:06
alcostaI have a display ASUS 28" with resolution of 3'840x2'160 pixels and a graphic card Nvidia GEforce GT710.17:07
EriC^^aha17:08
alcostaAT the first boot from the usb pen, after some indication that ubuntu is starting, the screen went black and the monitor hibernates!17:09
alcostaI had the intuition that, maybe, the operating system was not able to manage the high resolution display.17:10
alcostaI connected to the same graphic card, another display, philips, 22", with low (!) resolution of 1920x1080 and... the system started!17:11
EriC^^nice17:12

alcostaI solved the problem but... after some days of troubles!17:16
peter_shoes_thank you both17:16
alcostaFor me the problem is solved but, for some other, the problem can repeat!17:16
tomreynalcosta: did you try booting from usb with the large resolution screen and the failsafe graphics option?17:17
alcostaI tried something similar to boot with alternate option but.. I didn't know what to do with such an option!17:18
alcostaWhat to do from a command line terminal for solving the problem!17:19
alcostaThe system was able to boot from disk (no more need for pen) without graphics but... what had i to do per solving the problem? Unplug the high resolution monitor and connect the low resolution one was very simple, but after some day of big troubles!17:21
tomreynalcosta: booting with the "failsafe graphics" option from the grub menu (first (text) menu showing) may work out for installing, and the installer should then automatically select the proprietary nvidia driver for installation, so you should be able to use the high dpi screen ine after installation. note, however, that 20.04 is getting a bit dated, the latest LTS release is 22.04, and its installaer may provide better support for your graphics17:23
tomreyncard.17:23
tomreynalcosta: instead of spending 3 days to try to solve it, you're welcome to come here and discuss the details of the issue sooner in the future.17:24
alcostaIn my opinion, it's evident that ubuntu 20.04 can't boot, for the first time, from a large resolution monitor with a poor graphic card like nvidia geforce GT710!17:24
leftyfbalcosta: did you try 22.04?17:25
alcostaI'm very much engaged in developing a new app, with a great number of other problems! I tried to load ubuntu 22.04 but i found that, for the moment, 20.04 is better, because i know it a bit more!17:27
alcostaWith some features of 22.04 i was a bit unfit! (I don't remember well, now, with which particular feature, but i preferred to continue with 20.04.17:28
leftyfbalcosta: ok, but you only have about 14 more months or so till 20.04 will be unsupported by the Ubuntu community17:30
alcostaI'm coding the app in node.js, python and some other feature... it was unfit, for me, to reload all the libraries in a total new version of ubuntu or to mix the two versions!17:31
leftyfbok, so it sounds like you're painting yourself into a closet by only developing for aging libraries17:32
leftyfbyour call, it's just more work for you down the road17:32
alcostaI was more confident to continue with the old version 20.04. I hope that in the next months i can try my app with new new version 22.04.17:33
alcostaTo mix coding the new app and testing the new features of 22.04 is not for me so comfortable!17:36
alcostaOne thing at a time, please!17:36
tomreynok alcosta. do you need ubuntu support with anything else at this time?17:37
alcostaI have some problem with launching google chrome from 20.04 version! After a new boot, the left bar is blinking for about 20 seconds! Subsequently, the is no other problem! Launching chrome after the first boot don't give any more problem! Is that solved with version 22.04 too?17:39

alcostaAs mentioned before, I love my old habits! Is there a solution without changing Chrome for Chromium? (Whoever leaves the old path for the new one, knows what he leaves, he doesn't know what he may finds! (ancient Italian proverb))17:44
tomreynYou'll need to ask Google about this.17:45
alcostaIs there a google channel on libera.chat?17:46
tomreyn(There is no Google Chrome package in Ubuntu, and most volunteers here will only be using the open source Chromium variant of this web browser.)17:46

alcostaAny way, ok! I will survive to all these problems! I hope other people can survive too! :)17:52
alcostaSee you next time! :)18:10
alcostaAny way, i know that in April 2024, the new version ubuntu 24 will be available! For the moment I prefer to skip version 22 and go directly to version 24. That is what i thought some months ago! Thank you every body! :)18:22

rfmalcosta, in your planning, be aware that there will not be a direct 20.04>24.04 upgrade, and the upgrade to 24.04 from 22.05 won't be available until 24.04.1 ships around August 2024.18:45
rfmalcosta, if you plan to simply back up your data and do a fresh install, the upgrade restrictions won't affect you.18:45
alcostarfm, thank you! In fact, I plan to back up my data and do a fresh install of version 24, preferably after some time of testing. :)18:50
