cobraerikoI can connect to IPv4 and IPv6 websites when connected with LAN, but I can only connect to IPv6 websites when connected only with WiFi.  I can't figure out why I can't load IPv4 websites on my Ubuntu laptop when connected to only WiFi. How should I fix this?02:03
cobraeriko- I already made sure both IPv4 and IPv6 are set to automatic (DHCP)02:03

k4k0Would it be interesting to update or not? hum07:25
k4k0oO07:25
Your_Dogk4k0: yes, since 23.04 is non LTS07:34
Your_DogAlso 23.04 was EOL'd since last January07:35
k4k0Should I update or is it better to wait for the LTS version? I heard that there is time to update, otherwise I won't be able to do it anymore07:35
k4k0hm07:35
Your_DogHmmmh right07:36
k4k0New release '23.10' available.07:36
Your_Dog24.04 is gonna be release a month after now but as for your question if you should pick 23.10 or the upcoming LTS it depends on you.07:37
k4k0I should update but would I be able to update after 23.04 to the LTS version?07:37
Your_DogLTS means longer security updates but not much application updates, you have a much longer window for upgrading versions but you wont always get the latest software version. If you're happy with that, LTS is a good choice07:38
k4k023.04 for version 24.04 it is possible even without updating to version 23.1007:38
k4k0?07:39
Your_DogYou can't skip versions im afraid07:40
Your_Dogso 23.04 to 23.10 to 24.0407:40
k4k0hm07:41
k4k0So I'll try to update07:42
* k4k0 shrug07:42
PeGaSuSyou can jump to the next LTS07:47
k4k0too late, I've already started updating07:48
k4k0;x07:48
PeGaSuSyou don't necessarily need to go through the "interim" releases07:48
k4k023.10 is minotaur oO07:48
PeGaSuSit's an "interim" release, that'd be supported for 9 months07:49
k4k0hm07:50
PeGaSuSthere are two types of releases inside Ubuntu: the well known LTS and the Interim: https://releases.ubuntu.com/07:50
PeGaSuSwhich means that you can safely jump from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04 without any issues and that's the default on Ubuntu07:52

Your_DogPeGaSuS: really? i didnt know u can just upgrade from a prior interim version to LTS. Last time I remember you cant jump from 21.04 to 22.0408:57
asanHI I am trying to update from ubuntu 18 to 20. do-release-upgrade says install all available updates. Whereas apt upgrade says "0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded."09:11
PeGaSuSYour_Dog: 21.04 was an interim09:15
Your_Dogyes09:15
Your_Dogk4k0 was asking 23.04 to 24.0409:16
PeGaSuSthere, yes, I'm afraid you can't jump directly to an LTS09:16
Your_Dogah09:16
Your_Dogdarn it, you got me excited there09:16
asanPlease help. How do I jump from 18 to the next LTS>09:17
PeGaSuS!eol09:17
ubottuEnd-Of-Life is when security updates and support for an Ubuntu release stop. Make sure to update Ubuntu before it goes EOL so you get updates promptly for newly-discovered security vulnerabilities. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOL and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more info. Looking to upgrade from an EOL release? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades09:17
PeGaSuSasan: Ubuntu 18.04 is EOL since last year. follow the last link of the ubottu message09:18
PeGaSuSso you can upgrade successfully to 22.0409:19
PeGaSuS20.04 will be EOL next year, so I strongly advise to update/upgrade to 22.0409:19
asanthanks PeGaSuS09:22
asanPeGaSuS those instructions did not work for me. even the support tool for upgrade did not work09:32
PeGaSuSyou mean that `sudo apt update` says that there aren't any updates?09:35
PeGaSuSalso, if ALL the updates are installed you need to reboot before trying `sudo do-release-upgrade`09:36
PeGaSuSotherwise Ubuntu won't update09:36

asan90should I remove it ???09:45
asan90I have removed it09:46
PeGaSuSasan90: try `sudo apt install code`09:46
PeGaSuSyou could just force the upgrade of the package09:46
asan90I removed it. Will install later. rebooting now.09:47
PeGaSuSnow, usually you need to reboot the machine so then you can `sudo do-release-upgrade`09:47
asan90PeGaSuS it worked. thanks09:48
PeGaSuSasan90: you're welcome!09:49
asan90tyvm09:49
PeGaSuSalways check for packages that aren't updated with `sudo apt list --upgradable`. if any, you can force the upgrade with `sudo apt install <package name>`.09:50
PeGaSuSthen, you *alwways* need to reboot your machine before upgrading the OS09:50

Some_PersonI think I made a big mistake. I had an autosaved scan in simple-scan that was a bit over half of a very long book. Now it seems to be gone. Is there any way to retrieve it? IDK where it stores autosaves18:34
Some_PersonIf I lose it, that is countless hours of work over the course of months gone18:35
d050probably gone forever im ngl18:35
Some_PersonD:18:35
Some_Persongod damnit18:36
leftyfbyou took on a multi-month project and relied on an autosave feature without backups?18:36
Some_PersonMaybe I was lucky but I managed to successfully scan several volumes of a series this way18:36
d050ye, did you not save manually at all?18:36
Some_PersonI didn't :(18:37
d050also uh, how can i change and customize my colors and stuff?18:37
d050i just got done installing linux on my old laptop so im kinda new18:37
d050@Some_Person use this as a learning moment lol18:37
d050save your work always18:38
leftyfbd050: what release and flavor are you running?18:38
Some_PersonIt's a 502 page book and I had scanned up to page 251. And it's due back on the 19th :(18:38
d050lubuntu, latest18:38
Some_Personand I'm using a flatbed and having to put a heavy object on top of the book to get it to scan cleanly18:38
d050laptop is a pos. 2 gb of ram and a cpu from 200818:38
Some_Personso it's a big pain in the butt18:38
Some_PersonI need to find a better tool to do this, because it's obvious now that simple-scan is insufficient18:39
leftyfbSome_Person: now you have incentive to do it right this time :)18:39
leftyfbuh18:39
leftyfbSome_Person: simple scan is just fine. You need to save the files you want to keep18:39
d050Some_Person yknow just save your work next time :')18:40
leftyfbleaving them in some cache is never the answer18:40
Some_Personleftyfb: For such a long book, I need it to keep the file names in order. It can't restart numbering every time I go back to scan18:40
Some_Personsimple-scan is incapable of this18:40
leftyfbwhy not buy the digital version of the book? I can't imagine is costs more than months of your time18:41
d050Some_Person try zlib?18:42
Some_Personleftyfb: lol, because no such thing exists!18:42
Some_Personit's an out of print series from the 1990s18:42
leftyfbd050: zlib(c) is a compression library. Nothing to do with scanning documents18:43
d050leftyfb Im aware, but I meant finding the book on there instead of scanning it yourself18:44
=== deepSleep is now known as Guest8181
Some_PersonI need a tool that can scan files into a collection of sorts. I need to be able to view each scan after making it. I need to be able to discard bad scans. And importantly, I need to be able to append to this collection. And this needs to be saved in a better way than this stupid autosave crap18:49
Some_PersonAny suggestions?18:49
Some_PersonI also don't want the tool to process the scan in any way. I just want the data from the scanner dumped to a PNG file or similar18:51
leftyfb"Save Document to File". Button at the top with a little down arrow18:51
Some_Personleftyfb: Yes. And then when I open it again, it creates a brand new collection with no continuity with anything scanned before18:52
Some_Personyou see the problem?18:52
leftyfbSome_Person: you're doing the scanning. Just name things sequentially18:53
d050Some_Person use adobe scan, it has a preset specifically for books18:53
tomreynd050: there's #lubuntu for lubuntu (desktop) specific questions18:53
Some_Persond050: Um... does that even exist for Linux?18:54
JanCI'm sure if there is an autosave then it's saved somewhere?18:54
leftyfbAdobe scan is a mobile app18:55
Some_PersonJanC: It does. But it only seems to use this feature if the application is closed ungracefully, which admittedly is a dumb thing to rely on18:55
Some_Personlol at scanning a book with a mobile app, that would produce awful results18:55
d050tomreyn alright, thanks18:55
Some_PersonI mean it's probably fine for something where quality doesn't matter and you just need the information, but that's not what I'm aiming for here. I'm taking 600 dpi scans with a flatbed because it's the best way I have to do it18:56
d050you might like the results18:57
d050just try it18:57
d050its free anyways18:57
Some_PersonJust did. It looks exactly like I expected. Geometry issues because there's no way to get a book to lay flat on top of a surface. And the text is far less clear because obviously the smartphone camera is nowhere near the quality of a 600 dpi scan19:00
Some_PersonI mean, it's readable, but pretty crap for archival work19:00
d050welp...19:00
d050time to find an app that has the feature set you want on linux19:00
d050:D19:00
JanCmaybe script your own "tool" that scans, shows the scan, allows you to accept or deny the scan, repeat that until the scan is right, then loops to scan the next page   :)19:03
plastikmanWhy not just cut the binding off then feed the pages through?  that will accomplish the task of digitizing the pages and avoid weird angle problems19:05
JanCwith a library book...?19:06
* JanC thinks they won't be happy19:06
plastikmanAlso, not sure this is a ubuntu problem :)19:06
plastikmanfeels like piracy with extra steps19:07
Some_PersonI can't take the binding off a library book19:07
tyklingyou can but they frown upon it19:08
plastikmanNot with that attitude.  Anyway, again, not sure this is a ubuntu specific problem.  as the issue you are having will exist across all platforms19:09
Some_PersonI mean, it's just a question of needing a scanner program that keeps track of things scanned in a persistent way. simple-scan doesn't do this apart from its autosave feature, which as I learned today is extremely brittle19:10
plastikmanthe guy that runs the techtangents YT channel has a scanner that can do edgeless book scans, maybe check his video out and try to find his exact scanner model.  he is a Linux user so obviously has it all woeking19:10
Some_PersonI mean... it doesn't really matter what scanner I use if the software doesn't do what I need19:11
leftyfb"simple" scan19:11
JanCit seems like Simple Scan allows you to run a script to "postprocess" the scans; such scripts should be able to able to save the files in a known location also?19:11
Some_PersonI doubt that would discard the file if I delete it within simple-scan though19:11
JanCyou can discard them manually afterwards, but at least you would have a copy of all scans  :)19:12
Some_Personand I discard frequently enough that this would be a major PITA19:13
Some_PersonI'm scanning a 10 volume series here, and I'm on volume 5. Even small time savings during the scan process add up quickly here19:13
JanCyou use the "Multiple Pages From Flatbed" option?19:13
Some_PersonNo, because that unfortunately just causes it to scan over and over continuously19:14
JanCI don't have a scanner, so I can't really test anything19:15
Some_Personwhile I need time to open scanner, remove heavy object, pick up book, turn page, replace book, replace heavy object, and close scanner19:15
JanCoh, it doesn't wait for a keypress or anything?19:17
Some_PersonIt's stupid enough not to do that19:17
Some_PersonI think the option is intended for scanners with a document feeder19:18
JanCdid you also try the other scanner software in Ubuntu?19:18
Some_Personwhich one? I'm asking for suggestions here19:18

meltedy2kHi! I'm trying to install Ubuntu on an MSI bravo 17CV7, but it seems the laptop doesn't detect the live usb stick, I'm guessing I have to disable secure boot but  can't seem to find the way to access the BIOS settings on this machine, could anyone help?22:21

meltedy2kit'0s just a usb stick22:42
meltedy2kbig one though maybe that's a problem?22:43
meltedy2kit's not detecting it in the boot sequence list of disks22:44
