AMPed | I just installed 23.10 and now my ESC key wants to show or hide my desktop. I tried looking into Settings->Keyboard->Application Shortcuts and Settings->Window Manager->Keyboard to remove whatever Shortcut would cause that, but it still happens. What else can I do? | 02:43 |
ruenoak | AMPed, do you mean show/hide desktop applications ? | 03:09 |
AMPed | ruenoak: I don't know the proper terminology. If I've got an application window onscreen, hitting ESC shows the desktop; if the desktop is onscreen, the ESC key brings up the most recently used window. | 03:12 |
ruenoak | ok I think by default this is set to shortcut <super>d to show/hide apps open on the desktop | 03:13 |
AMPed | That does (what looks like) the same thing. | 03:14 |
ruenoak | Ok let me just check something | 03:20 |
ruenoak | So in Xubuntu 23.10 <super>d is a xfwm4 custom shortcut to show/hide applications, wondering if your si somehow mapped to esc | 03:23 |
AMPed | How would I check (and then correct) that? | 03:24 |
ruenoak | if you go to: Settings - Settings Editor, in Setting Editor scroll down to xfce-keyboard-shortcuts, then scroll down to xfwm4, under custom look for the value show_desktop_key | 03:26 |
ruenoak | Screenshot here: https://imgur.com/JyClJx4.png | 03:27 |
AMPed | It's just <Super>d | 03:29 |
ruenoak | hmm I was hoping it was esc | 03:29 |
ruenoak | In Settings Editor in the search field type esc and see what comes up | 03:30 |
AMPed | But I see a Default <Primary>Escape mapped to xfce4-popup-whiskermenu, which it doesn't actually seem to do, unless I'm overlooking something every time. | 03:30 |
ruenoak | I think that CTRL esc does that ? | 03:32 |
AMPed | Removing that value doesn't seem to do anything, unless I need to reload the desktop | 03:32 |
AMPed | Ctrl-Esc doesn't appear to do anything. | 03:33 |
AMPed | Nor do I see any listing for it in the Settings Editor | 03:33 |
ruenoak | ctrl - esc opens the menu classic and whisker | 03:34 |
ruenoak | are you using a standard keyboard mapping ? | 03:34 |
AMPed | Yes. The only thing I've done to change it is to swap out Capslock and Left-Ctrl. | 03:35 |
AMPed | Right-Ctrl is unchanged. | 03:35 |
ruenoak | did your problem start after that ? | 03:36 |
ruenoak | have you reset to defaults | 03:36 |
AMPed | Not immediately, to my recollection. | 03:37 |
AMPed | Not reset yet. Is there a way to change them all back at once? | 03:37 |
ruenoak | there is reset to defaults in Settings Keyboard Application Layout | 03:39 |
AMPed | Okay, here goes nothing... | 03:39 |
AMPed | Hrm... didn't change Capslock or Left-Ctrl, they're still swapped. And Esc still shows/hides the desktop. | 03:40 |
AMPed | Aha. I think I see a culprit, which is also causing me other headaches. | 03:42 |
AMPed | Just swapped out a Bluetooth KB for a wired one. | 03:42 |
AMPed | But now... why would bluetooth do that? | 03:43 |
AMPed | (USB-connected KB works as I intended.) | 03:44 |
AMPed | Also, I've been using that keyboard in Xubuntu and Windows 10 for months without issue. | 03:46 |
AMPed | Had been | 03:46 |
ruenoak | Ah that's interesting, I have had an issues with a Bluetooth keyboard in the passed on Linux | 03:46 |
ruenoak | I never got to the bottom of it unfortunately | 03:47 |
AMPed | Ah. Well, I have my workaround for now. | 03:47 |
AMPed | Thanks! | 03:47 |
ruenoak | I'm guessing it maybe something in the Bluetooth interface not quite detaching the keyboard correctly. | 03:48 |
ruenoak | You could do some searching on that model keyboard maybe and issues with Linux | 03:49 |
ruenoak | Im glad you found a solution :) | 03:49 |
AMPed | Yup. Thanks again, and have a good evening/morning/whatever time it is where you are. | 03:50 |

bynarie | running xubuntu 22.04, nvidia propietary driver, looking to get login screen set to 144hz like it is when i login.. | 15:05 |
bynarie | so on boot, its at like 60hz but when i login, it goes to 144 | 15:05 |
AMPed | Ugh. Needed to `snap remove emacs`, then tried to `apt install emacs`, but it says "emacs is already at the latest version"; but `which emacs` says "emacs not found". How can I reinstall it? | 17:21 |
qud | 17:59 | |
torv | bynarie: Maybe look into `lightdm-gtk-greeter` and/or `lightdm`. From searches it looks like you may have to carefully do some custom configurations for `xorg`. I guess it uses a default refresh rate as local users might have their own display settings. | 23:25 |
