iconoclast_herohow can i manually rotate /var/log/syslog ?15:43
milktoasthope I'm in the right area.... been running for a while and it just upgraded to 22 and the ubuntu desktop scrabbled up.  I can't find a solutions... any ideas?15:49

iconoclast_herolog in as such15:51
milktoastcan't really see the Login screen on the desktop... scribbled up15:51
iconoclast_heroif you have something in one of your .files that is causing the problem this would point that out15:51

iconoclast_heroupdate-alternative should probably do this too...15:53
milktoastcurrently    Main PID: 1646 (gdm3)15:53
BarnabasDKiconoclast_hero, could this be a move to Wayland problem via upgrade to 22? Maybe try to configure gdm to use X.15:56
BarnabasDKsee if it restores the login screen15:56
milktoaston a ssh and a local terminal, I ran "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3" and it just went back to a blank command line15:58
jcduttonmilktoast, can you take a pic of the "scibbled up" screen.  I cannot understand what that looks like.15:58
milktoastI'll try I screen shot... just a moment15:58
jcduttoniconoclast_hero, "logrotate -f"15:59
BarnabasDKmilktoast, if you reconfgure gdm (a good idea as an initial fix) you would also need to restart it16:02
BarnabasDKsudo systemctl restart gdm16:02
milktoastI don't see an "attach" option on this IRC16:03

bunjeenewbie here.....can I get some help finding out if I can upgrade my current OS without burning a DVD?16:07
milktoast98use a USB memory stick16:07
milktoast98or just a command line16:08
bunjeewwhat command line?16:08
BarnabasDKbunjee, could you post the output of16:08
BarnabasDKlsb_release -a16:08
BarnabasDKin a terminal16:09
milktoast98sudo apt update    and then    sudo apt upgrade16:09
BarnabasDKmilktoast98, he wants to upgrade the entire os16:09
BarnabasDKnot just installed dependencies16:09
BarnabasDKand software16:10
milktoast98oh... sorry16:10
BarnabasDKso - lets find out what version we he is at16:10
BarnabasDKallthough that is a good idea before doing any os upgrade actions16:11
BarnabasDKbunjee, are you familiar with launching the terminal?16:12
milktoast98I ran  "sudo systemctl restart gdm" and started the PC and the screen is the same16:13
bunjeeI have the terminal open and found out the release it's 22.04 jammy16:14
BarnabasDKbunjee, super16:14
jcduttonbunjee, what are you wishing to upgrade from what to what?16:14
BarnabasDKfrom 22.04 as he states16:15
BarnabasDKnow - to what16:15
milktoast98That is my version that is giving me the scribbled screen16:16
jcduttonbunjee, if it is from one version of ubuntu to another, you can use "do-release-upgrade".  No DVD or USB needed if your PC has internet access.16:16
jcduttonbunjee, but backup all your data first, in case the upgrade fails.16:16
bunjeeI'll try that16:17
BarnabasDKbunjee, as far as I can tell, and everyone else please chime in, 22.04 is the latest LTS version - are you sure you want to move to the "interim" version of ubuntu - that is the more unstable version of ubuntu between LTS versions?16:17
BarnabasDKor are you really wishing to upgrade to the next LTS version16:17
bunjeeyes....just did the command and it read there is no LTS relese as of now.16:18
BarnabasDKbunjee, so I think - unless you have a very specific need - you should maybe wait for the LTS release that is to replace 22.04?16:19
bunjeeyou are correct sir. Thank you.16:19
BarnabasDKbunjee, happy to help16:20
jcduttonbunjee, there are more up to date ubuntu versions, but they are more like test versions, in between LTS versions.  It is safer to stick with LTS. There will be another LTS soon.16:20
bunjeeThank you to all helping .16:22
milktoast98any other ideas on the scribbled the screen? :-)16:23
BarnabasDKmilktoast98, could you check the contents of /etc/gdm3/custom.conf16:24
BarnabasDKis the value WaylandEnable set and if so - to what16:24
BarnabasDKa hash would be a comment out of the config parameter16:25
milktoast98#WaylandEnable=false16:25
BarnabasDKan experiment - I do not know if it will fix your problem - but could you try to remove that hash - and do the gdm restart again?16:26
BarnabasDKyou do not need to reboot your pc16:26
milktoast98will do16:26
BarnabasDKit should then run GDM using X - not wayland - and your drivers may be more compatible16:28
milktoast98BarnabasDK   you're a genius... that solved the issue16:29
BarnabasDKwell ..16:29
BarnabasDKWayland is the future16:29
BarnabasDKX is what we are leaving behind16:29
BarnabasDKmy guess is that you are probably using nvidia card?16:29
BarnabasDKand - when you continue to login in GDM - for now - make sure to select gnome on X not gnome on wayland in the dropdown16:30
milktoast98RV370 [Radeon X600/X600 SE]16:31
BarnabasDKunfortunately (or fortunately? I don't know) I have very little experience with recent AMD GPU drivers and linux16:31
BarnabasDKand wayland16:31
milktoast98Thanks for your help!!16:33
BarnabasDKmilktoast98, happy to help16:33
jcduttonmilktoast98, did you have any luck uploading a pic to pastebin or whatever and posting a link here16:36
milktoast98I cant find an  "upload" or attach link16:38
BarnabasDKjcdutton, also - it is probably an AMD GPU driver issue - not really something fixable in ubuntu16:39
BarnabasDKincompability with wayland16:39
BarnabasDKmilktoast98, Just so you realize - the "solution" is not that - it is a work around16:40

bpromptactually, there were screenshots and pictures at the same time as IRC, just a matter of what one wants to send or show17:15
BarnabasDKbut where they in the irc protocol?17:16
BarnabasDKand are they today?17:16
BarnabasDKand - just to keep that kind of stuff (and code out of the channel) - I suggest a pastebin - I hope you agree?17:17
iconoclast_heroi was using irc in 1992 or 1993 I'm sure...17:17

milktoastback again... looking for advice....17:17
milktoastLooking to create a Home NAS17:17
milktoastmy computer is a Dell Precision T740017:17

milktoastThe NAS will hold the Pics, Muisc and video that my Plex server uses and other personal data storage17:17
milktoastI hope that makes sense.17:17
iconoclast_heroi guess you could mime attach it to an email if you had that.17:18
bpromptBarnabasDK: depends on the IRC client, many can show emojis these days17:18
BarnabasDKbprompt, basically you can serialize anyting over irc and make it work in a client17:18
BarnabasDKbut - it is then up to the client17:19
iconoclast_heroftp it...17:19
BarnabasDKftp is hopefully not in use any more17:19

Guest68hi, how how to fix the following? W: https://pkg.osquery.io/deb/dists/deb/InRelease: Key is stored in legacy trusted.gpg keyring (/etc/apt/trusted.gpg), see the DEPRECATION section in apt-key(8) for details. i run these commands: https://ideone.com/jGs3Fc17:19
iconoclast_heroBarnabasDK: the comment just struck me as I was surprised when I came back to it 20 years later and now use it for help all the tie.17:19
Guest68any idea on the ^^17:19
bpromptBarnabasDK: yeap, in essence IRC will do text, but then again, you can base64 a bitmap picture and decode it on the client, hmmm there's also DCC, and that has been in IRC since the beginning I think, and in DCC you can send anything over17:20
iconoclast_heroi use ftp to move stuff back and forth b/w my seedbox.17:20
BarnabasDKiconoclast_hero, yeah17:20
iconoclast_heroi'd have to pay more for ssl and i don't care that my torrent contnets is in the clear.17:20

tomreynGuest68: so "apt-key(8)" is a way of saying "run   man 8 apt-key" in your terminal, or read section 8 of the "apt-key" man(ual) page online17:23
tomreyn!man17:23
ubottuThe "man" command brings up the Linux manual pages for the command you're interested in. Try "man intro" at the  command line, or see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal | Manpages online: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/17:23
Guest68ubottu here is way i run the chmod: https://ideone.com/jGs3Fc17:24
tomreynGuest68: here's the online man page, and the 'deprecation' section, explaining why this returned a warning https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/jammy/en/man8/apt-key.8.html#deprecation17:25
Guest68is the chmod really required?17:25
Guest68for the error above in the ideone paste?17:25
Guest68tmroland also can i do a sudo cp trusted.gpg trusted.gpg.d ... to fix the warning?17:26
Guest68or better to do: sudo apt-key export 0C1289C0 | sudo gpg --dearmour -o /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/teamviewer.gpg ... ?17:28
tomreynthe ideone pastebin is difficult to read for me, as it forcefully wraps lines, also it looks like the urls in the paste are modified somehow.17:29

tomreynGuest68: so the first error at line 14 on the dpaste seem to be about a missing gpg key DDCAE044F796ECB017:32
tomreynGuest68: maybe that's the one you're later downloading, but i can't verify this, because the url is garbled17:33

tomreynGuest68: to respond to your question about chmod: this may be needed, or at least desirable, it should not harm.17:35
milktoastthat was the display17:36
Guest68tomreyn ok thx - does the sudo chmod 0644 /usr/share/keyrings/nvidia-container-toolkit-keyring.gpg \ make sense in here? https://dpaste.com/BJKPVARPT17:39
Guest68line 4: Err:4 https://nvidia.github.io/libnvidia-container/stable/deb/amd64  InRelease17:40
Guest68  The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY DDCAE044F796ECB017:40
Guest68so i added: sudo chmod 0644 /usr/share/keyrings/nvidia-container-toolkit-keyring.gpg ... see https://dpaste.com/BJKPVARPT ... does that make sense?17:41
tomreynmilktoast: so your setup plan does not sound wrong. you may want to use a mirror raid for a nas, to increase data storage reliability. i do not know what kinds of NAS plex supports, or which operating systems you will use to access the data on the NAS. NFS may be ideal if you have linux only clients (to the NAS), otherwise it's probably samba (if you also have windows clients; not sure about os x).17:42
tomreynGuest68: why are you running these series of commands and not just one by one? would that not be much easier to debug?17:45
tomreynand, again, which guide are you following there?17:45
tomreynand do you have the full urls available?17:46

SamuelMarksIs there a new file manager in Ubuntu 24.04?20:38
SamuelMarksEvery directory opens in VSCode. How do I open in GNOME's file manager instead? - `xdg-mime query default inode/directory` shows org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop; `nautilus .` says I need to `apt install nautilus` and all of `open .`, `xdg-open .`, `gio open .` open up VScode instead of a proper default file manager.20:39
newb_questionI have an Ubuntu 22.0.4.1 system running kernel 6.5.0-26-generic. I want to experiment on a kernel module that's in-tree, so I install the kernel source with this command, taken straight from the Ubuntu wiki: apt source linux-image-unsigned-$(uname -r)20:43
newb_questionLots of stuff happens, everything seems to be good, I see reassuring stuff like "applying linux-hwe-6.5_6.5.0-26.26~22.04.1.diff.gz"20:43
newb_questionBut when I actually compile a module and do a "sudo make module_install", it keeps installing my new module into /usr/lib/modules/6.5.13 instead of 6.5.0-26-generic! What am I doing wrong?20:44
