quiquehey folks, I have a Ubuntu 22.04 desktop with the latest updates takes about to 2 minutes after I enter my userid/password to login, unlocking the screensaver takes almost nothing01:04
quiqueI am using the wayland display01:04
quiqueit seems rather odd to me, isn't it?01:04
quiqueoh... not wayland, X11.01:05

quiquehello, just tested again, 2'17" to login after a full logout. that can't be good01:12
sarnoldquique: does this look like your thing? it's a wild shot in the dark .. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/205984701:12

quiquelet me check the journal log01:13
quiquethis is auth.log https://dpaste.org/pa2BU01:15
quiqueno, the MetaSyncRing messages do not show up01:19
sarnoldoh dang. sorry for the distraction then :(01:19

nshiredoes ubuntu play nice with dynamically expanding virtual disks or do I need to allocate everything all at once for the partition01:32
=== antonispgs4 is now known as antonispgs
quiquein my experience expanding the disk size in Ubuntu is easy01:35
nshireit's the root filesystem01:35
rboxwhat is a 'dynamically expanding virtual disk'01:36
rfmvirtualbox has them, the difference is whether it writes all the blocks at once at creation or does it as the vm writes to the disk01:37
rboxthe OS doesnt' care about that01:38
quiquewell, tough life, barrier does not work well on Wayland, so... slow logins are in.01:39
rfmnshare, the dynamic disk will work just fine with Ubuntu (I always use them).  There are situations where preallocation might be worthwhile, like the underlying disk fills up a lot and you don't want the VM to suffer, but they're pretty rare..01:45
nshirehm so I'm trying to run a tf2 server, but I get the error "Package steamcmd is not available, but is referred to by another package." when I try to install the server manager02:29
nshireI am on ubuntu server 23.1002:29
rboxwhat command are you typing02:29
nshirecould this have something to do with the removal of 32 bit support? I had to `dpkg --add-architecture i386` earlier as part of setup02:30
nshirerbox, `sudo apt install steamcmd`02:30

JanCsounds like you are trying to install some outdated software03:00
nshireteam fortress 2 was released in 200703:02
JanClibncurses6 was already the default in 20.04 LTS (and maybe even before that?)03:02
JanCwell03:02
nshireunclear if there is a breaking change between libncurses 5 and 603:03
JanCyou could try...03:03
nshireshould I just downgrade to 23.04?03:05
nshireor maybe 22.04 lts03:05
nshirethis is a fresh system so while I would prefer to not fully reinstall everything it is an option03:05
JanC22.04 still has ncurses5 available, so that might work03:05
JanCit might be possible to rebuild v5 for newer Ubuntu also (locally or in a PPA)03:07
JanCI assume you can't rebuild TF2...03:08
nshirenope03:08
nshirethey came out with a new update recently including new engine support with 64bit support, so it's possible the new libncurses version will just work03:08
nshire"WARNING: Failed to load 32-bit libtinfo.so.5 or libncurses.so.5. Please install (lib32tinfo5 / ncurses-libs.i686 / equivalent) to enable readline."03:28
nshireit looks like it is running ok otherwise03:29

tennisandersi use xfreerdp to connect to a remote Windows 10 machine. But the connection seems to degrade by use/reconnections during the day. I might rdp to it a couple of times during the day and eventually it will start performing very choppy and start disconnecting. A reboot of my ubuntu machine always solves this strangely. What might be causing it12:51

volumcan ubuntu switch windows with a three finger trackpad gesture?22:51
tomreynvolum: https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help/stable/touchscreen-gestures.html.en is what gnome-shell supports OOTB. some of these may only work on wayland, not Xorg. there are several gnome-shell-extensions which add more gestures and make them more configurable, also for Xorg.23:19
tomreyni assume "Switch Application" is what you wanted. note there is also "switch workspace".23:20
volumyes23:20
volumthe switch application gesture listed there sounds rather odd23:20
volumi shall try it next time i have ubuntu up and running23:20
volum"Hold three fingers on the surface while tapping with the fourth"23:21
volumi was hoping for "drag three fingers left/right to select an app" but perhaps there is a gnome-shell-extension that does this, as you suggest23:22
volumtomreyn ^23:23
tomreyna quick web search there listed several extensions, some of which provided configurable gestures.23:24
volumok. thanks tomreyn23:25
tomreynkeep in mind that, generally, gnome-shell-extensions have the ability to make your desktop act unreliable, so choose well.23:26
volumyeah i am very reluctant to tweak (hence ubuntu, actually)23:27
volumthe idea is to have a nice desktop install of ubuntu on a usb flash drive so that i can troubleshoot staff laptops23:31
volume.g. test peripherals/network, run lshw, etc.23:32
volumand i'm trying to replicate my windows 11 muscle memory onto mantic23:32
tomreynmake it an usb ssd, not a 'simple'/cheap flash drive.23:37
volumok. i can do a sata ssd wiith a separate sata to usba adapter23:38
tomreynbtw. 24.04.0 LTS releases today / tomorrow (depending on your time zone), so maybe focus on that instead23:38
volumoh cool23:38
volumi'm utc+10 and i'll download it tomorrow morning (+22h)23:41
tomreyni was rather thinking of an usb 3.1Gen2 ssd with a usb-a/c connector btw. but this is probably more of a topic for #hardware.23:45
