Fijihi there! i'm trying to upgrade some packages on ubuntu and i've got 8 packages that are upgradable, but when i try to `install` or upgrade, apt refuses to do the upgrade it seems to know about from `apt list --upgradable`. these packages don't seem to be held, so i'm not sure exactly where the problem is (and the apt-cache policy says i'm on the most recent. for reference i'm on 20.04 and trying to upgrade02:18
Fijithe question is, how can i upgrade these packages so i can upgrade my OS? :)02:18
NickH"apt upgrade" will only upgrade package, it will not install any new packages02:37
NickHSo you probably need to "apt full-upgrade" or "apt dist-upgrade"02:37
FijiNickH, when I tried that, it just says that i need to upgrade my packages before i do that02:39
NickHMaybe best to post the full output of all of "sudo apt update", "sudo apt upgrade", "sudo apt full-upgrade" to a pastebin02:40
Guest70Hi, any information on 24.04 LTS release? Its already 25th in most of the part of the world02:40

Guest70Got it - thanks02:44

NickHWhat about "sudo apt full-upgrade"?02:49
NickHHmm, has i386 achitecture been removed?02:51
NickHDo you actually need those i386 packages?02:51
Fijihey NickH - just saw your messages, i'm not sure why i have i386 packages or where they came from. i'd like to remove them, but something tells me removing `libc6` may cause more harm than good03:49

nikolamWhy I can't kill dd that sends /dev/random to usb flash? I tried Ctrl+C Ctrl+Break, I closed terminal emulator window/tab, I tried sudo kill -9 on process ID, it ignored everything till it stopped at some moment out of my control .. 22.0408:45
nikolamNow again the same thing. I end up not knowing what it did, did it continue working, ignoring kill signals till the end or not..08:47
nikolamit is very annoying not being able to control nor stop processes on your own machine..08:49
guimonikolam: I assume the process is blocked until the block (bs) is written.08:58
nikolamguimo, yes and I have no control over it as sudo or root as it seems08:59
nikolambs is 2M and image was 1.7G on slowish USB flash. But problem is why kernel can't stop the process? Or tools like kill -9 are not adequate09:00
guimoIf 2M takes so long, then it seems a buffer is between.09:06
guimoMaybe a dd option can avoid that.09:07
nikolamI don't have an option to kill process. dd should be just a process I can kill09:08
guimoYou can disconnect the USB-Stick. Then dd should stop immediately. ;-)09:10
nikolamso kernel can't control processes09:10
nikolamor I need another tool to stop them if pkill and kill -9 does not work09:11
nikolamLike now, dd is saying, after pushing from /dev/urandom to flash, "Nos pace left on device. And hangs there forever , not reacting to Ctrl+C nor kill -909:17
guimoAnd the USB-activity-LED?09:19

nikolamAnd I got answer like this: "you can't kill a process that waits for a i/o syscall to finish (status D). "09:27

nikolamIt's a kernel thing it is not capable of stopping process.09:28

SatoruGojocan you enter tty with alt + ctrl + F1 or any other F key09:39
gordonjcpI hate Windows-y error messages like that09:40
nikolamI was given idea to put oflag=sync when using dd, so it can be interrupted. Maybe that shoudl be default at least for dd , since the kernel can't handle processes.09:40

NeilRGlooks like 24.04 is up now15:53
Guest50Hey, the Ubuntu community page for full disk encryption (2019) was written by Tj, does anyone know if he is still around?15:53
ioriai'd like to know15:54
Guest5024.04 isn't showing logical volumes on the UI installer, so cannot assign correct formatting etc to them15:54
tomreynGuest50: rarely around here, i think he switched distros15:54
MSM757I can't install 24.04. The intaller keep crashing. Tried 5 times now. Same every time.  Anyone have any idea? Also it wont show logical drives either. So that's an issue.15:55
Guest50tomreyn ah shame.... Is there an equivalent guide?15:55
tomreynGuest50: i do not know, sorry15:55
Ratman5005I thought it was just done during the install (no need to use systemd-cryptenroll) is that wrong?15:55
tomreynMSM757: have you verified the iso checksum?15:55
ioriaRatman5005, idk, sy15:56
Guest50Is the 24.04 installer "actual" FDE then? There was a reason his guide existed15:56
Guest50Or do we know why the new installer doesn't show mappers?15:57
Guest50It doesn't show partitions/lvs15:57
tomreynGuest50: i do not know for certain, but i would be very surprised if the 24.04 installers would support encrypting /boot now.15:58
ogra_well, if you pick the TPM option there is no /boot and you get FDE15:58
MSM757tomreyn: yep Cheksum is good. It just dosen't work.15:58
ogra_(and your kernel is a snap)15:58
Guest50What's the point of the manual partitioning option if I cannot see logical volumes?15:58
MSM757This issue was reported several times during the Beta apparently. I found a thread. I guess they didn't fix it.15:59
Guest50I cannot assign swap....15:59
Guest50This is stupid15:59
tomreynGuest50: which installer are you using?15:59
MSM757Yeah. the logical partitions not showing up is an issue for me too.16:00
MSM757THis is totally jacked.16:00
MSM757Nothing works.16:00
Guest50Normal installer...16:00
tomreyndesktop? server? core? something else?16:00
Ratman5005It does say experimental still: Experimental support for TPM-backed Full Disc Encryption and ZFS encryption16:01
ogra_logical partitions ? if your machine uses UEFI the partiton table will likely default to GPT ... there is no such thing like logical partitions in GPT16:01
tomreynogra_: oh that's interesting, nice.16:01
Guest50tomreyn sorry back16:02
Guest50MSM757 so you are also manually installing with LVM?16:02
MSM757No LVM. just regular install.16:02
MSM757installer crashes randomly.16:02
Guest50I don't understand why they have removed this option, am.I missing something?16:03
Guest50It should show logical volumes surely?16:03
ogra_yeah, volumes for LVM16:03
MSM757First time it crashed two seconds after i opened it. Next time it creashed 50% through.  This most recent time it crashed during the user setup screen.16:03
ogra_but not logical partitions (for MBR)16:03
Guest50ogra_ "lvs" show my created volumes, but the installer doesn't show them, just has the partition showing "crypto luks"16:04
Guest50So I cannot select the volume for swap or root...16:04
ogra_ah, luks ...16:04
Guest50Yes luks sorry16:04
MSM757No, By defaults Debian and Ubuntu always used an extended or "logical" partition for swap.  If you're manually parittionting those parittions are not visable. That's he's talking about.  I have the same issue.16:05
tomreynMSM757: have you verified the data written to the installer media matches the checksum, too? did the installer self-check succeed during boot? does this system match the minimum requirements?16:05
MSM757tomreyn:  yes, yes, and yes.  It's just broken.16:05
Guest50I mean cmon the installer option is called "manual partitioning" :)16:06
tomreynubuntu desktop has been defaulting to gpt partition tables and swap *files* for a while16:06
MSM757There was an active bug report on this issue in the beta. I found a thread. LIke i said. It just dosen't work. They never fixed it i guess16:06
tomreynMSM757: would be nice to see it, if you can find it.16:07
Guest50So does someone actually have the answer, is this a bug or did they remove the ability to use LUKS like this? This has worked forever16:08
MSM757it also crashes on Boot up every time, Dumps me directl into a live session of the desktop. Dosen't give me the options16:08
tomreynif you can'T find the existing bug report and there is a malfunction or regression that does not seem to be related to your unique environment, please file a bug report16:10
MSM757What's ironic for me. Is the LTS releases of Ubuntu have always been the most broken.16:10
MSM757It's always been like that. and i've used Ubuntu since 2004. LOL!!16:10
Guest50tomreyn but I'm not sure this is even a bug, did they just remove the ability to use LVs as various mount points? I can only see the partitions, not the luks volumes16:11
MSM757The early alpha builds didn't crash on me though. LOL!!16:11
Guest50Normally under device it shows /dev/mapper/volume-group16:12
tomreynGuest50: i do not know. i also don't expect the desktop installer to support into existing on-disk structures.16:12
Guest50Now I'm just seeing normal partitions so nvme0n1p516:12
tomreyn*installing to16:13
Guest50tomreyn why are you saying that? Based on what changes? This has always worked16:13
NeilRGdoes anyone know how to answer "how do you want to install ubuntu" I want to format my linux partition, but thta's not an option16:13
Guest50tomreyn is there some higher level conceptual changes that makes you think they've removed this option?16:14
NeilRGalso do I want LVT or ZFS?16:14
NeilRGLVM*16:14
MSM757So this is my last attempt. I used Parted Magic to prepartition the drives. I will then run the insaller with no options selected. Everything defaults, I will also run the installer via terminal so i can have eyeballs on the output, So i can see the moment it creashes. If it crashes.16:14
MSM757If it happens again, i'm calling it quits. Going to to Debian.16:15
MSM757I was looking forward to this release. But if i can't even install the damn thing. Well.....    can't do much about that.16:15

tomreynGuest50: i know that the desktop installer changesd some releases ago. i do not know whether all of the previous features were ported to the new one.16:17
tomreynGuest50: i was just saying what my personal expectations would be for the desktop installer (it probably supports additonal scenarios).16:18
Guest50ravage thank you, glad its reported, be interesting to see if this is in fact a bug or Ubuntu doesn't want people manually using LVM16:18
Guest50tomreyn see above, someone else reported it. It worked in 23.10.16:18
tomreynGuest50: "It worked in 23.10." is your statement? I don't see this on the bug report.16:19
Guest50That isn't my bug report.16:20
Guest50Someone just linked it above16:20
tomreyni understood so much.16:20
Guest50This sort of thing is so basic to check, how can major UI changes to the installer not be tested I mean16:21
tomreynGuest50: i'm wondering whether you're saying this is a regression, because the bug report does not say so but you wrote "It worked in 23.10."16:21
Guest50Its worked like I and the reporter is describing for like a decade.16:22
Guest50I just can't believe that nobody has noticed this, which makes me think its been removed on purpose16:22
tomreyni don't remember this (installing to existing LV's) ever working on the desktop installer, but i can be wrong entirely.16:24

ebernhardsonI recently installed ubuntu jammy, mostly working but one issue. On my second monitor there are permenantly rendered drop-zones to the right and left of the screen. leftyfbGSMarquis: please read the "trunk series" column on the right side of the link oerheks provided20:50
oerheks 20240410 is not in proposed yet, too soon?20:50
leftyfb20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2 in Ubuntu 24.04 im the main repo is based on the 2024-04-10 trunk series20:51
GSMarquisironically, this 20240318 version was pulled into 24.04 on 4-10. LOL20:51
leftyfbwhich means you should have what you are looking for20:51

graingertwhen can I upgrade to 24.04 lts from 22.04?20:54
leftyfbgraingert: in August when 24.04.1 is released20:54
=== EriC^^_ is now known as EriC^^
oerhekswith the 24.04.1 releasepoint20:54
GSMarquisThis was a fresh beta install.20:54
graingertah cool20:54
oerheksoh, then apt update gives you the full 24.0420:55
graingertthat seems very sensible and cautious20:55
JanCusually you get prompted a little after .120:55
kostkon@oerheks there's a readily available fix that's good20:55
GSMarquisThe 7900 GRE gpu has a vbios bug that is fixed via Linux-firmware. Apparently its memory is clocked incorrectly.20:55
JanCoh, right 24.04 to 24.04 is automatic obviously20:56
GSMarquisAMD is not going to fix the vbios. It was initally set in place to prevent people from OC to close to 7900XT territory.20:56
GSMarquisSo I just need the bin file listed in the bug report and drop it into the firmware folder?20:58
GSMarquisLooks like it had commit on 4-5-2421:06
graingertJanC: that's not an upgrade21:14
oerhekswe do not recommend to use the -d development option, but if you do, prepare an usb with a fresh 24.04 iso first21:17
oerheksmost of those early upgrade blogs do not warn you enough, things can go south21:18
bray90820Does sudo do-release-upgrade work yet to upgrade to 22.0421:26
oerheksindeed, as always21:28
oerhekswait for 24.04.121:28
bray90820So when 24.04.1 comes out is wheb sudo do-release-upgrade will work?21:30
oerheksyes, or you will see the option when you run updates21:30
bray90820How would I upgrade today?21:31
oerheksfresh install?21:32
bray90820I was hoping not to have to fresh install21:33
bray90820I remember there was a command I used last time just can't remember what it is21:33
bray90820I guess I could run do-release-upgrade -d21:35
bray90820Would that work?21:35
bray90820I know it's teh Dev build but since today is release day it should be the regular release or am I wrong?21:38
toddcupgrading is not recommeded or supported till 24.04.1 version21:46

ice9I installed 24.04 beta last week, today the final version was released, but when I run `do-release-upgrade`, it doesn't show up any updates, is that normal?21:51
leftyfbice9: doing regular package updates will get you to the latest release21:56
ice9leftyfb, ok, another machine on 22.04, still also can't see 24.0422:05
ice9"Prompt=lts"22:05
leftyfbice9: you won't get the upgrade path from LTS till 24.04.1 is released in August22:08
ice9wow22:09
Muligan ubottu thank you very much for sharing22:52
Muliganthis is a vm that the CTO had tucked away unfortunately22:53
