[00:04] why doesn't my CPU support VT-x any more after installing 24.04? [13:14] Hi all [13:26] BluesKaj: Hi, Question ? [13:30] Hi Tingo, not atm, do you? [13:46] I've just added a Crucial P3 Plus NVMe to my system, Every time I use rsync or cp - my system locks up after 20 minutes. Is there a way to stop this? why does linux freeze when using rsync or cp with a Crucial P3 Plus NVMe? [13:47] is it a hardware problem? [13:48] does it only "lock up" if you write to that new device, or also if you only read, or use some other device only? [13:48] cbreak, I ran a memtest86 and it said my memory has zero defects [13:49] hmm... that will only check RAM, not the crucial nvme [13:49] you can try to look at the smart data of the new device with sudo smartctl -x /dev/devicenamehere [13:49] also, when using apps that migrate data, I can move a few hundred GB without locking up. It just seems to be cp and rsync directly on the host - /media mount to / mount [13:51] what do you mean by "lock up"? [13:52] freeze, frozen, keyboard and mouse unresponsive, and a while true `date` loop freezing too, to show me how long it takes before freezeing [13:53] can you still switch to a different console with e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F4 ? [13:54] and did you check the logs for anything useful just before the freeze? [13:54] smartctl result: https://bpa.st/7OCQ [13:57] JanC yes, https://bpa.st/7KSA is the journalctl data [13:57] windows: looks like the device already found some errors [13:59] cbreak, you mean the "Error Information Log Entries: 6" [14:00] yes. No idea how critical that is [14:00] sure. thanks, I'll RMA the NVMe back then. [14:01] you can initiate a smart self-test with smartctl -t offline [14:01] and after some time the result should show up in smartctl -x [14:02] maybe check if there are firmware upgrades for your motherboard & the NVME drive [14:03] I've checked. At this time there are no firmware updates for the Crucial P3 Plus [14:03] and your motherboard? [14:03] yup, updated all the firmware for the mobo etc [14:04] windows: since the error is in the nvme log and not the smart section, it might just be a transient communication error? Not sure. A smart selftest might tell you more. [14:04] in that case maybe replace it indeed [14:04] I did receive those popups, clicked okay, etc, rebooted after downloads and installs [14:04] are you sure the drive is properly seated / cooled? [14:04] it's new - less than a week old and the Crucial P3 Plus line itself too is quite new [14:05] maybe try to remove the drive & fit it back in [14:05] I've swapped the drive into a caddie and out again, same behavior [14:06] freeze happens somewhere between 20 and 50 minutes, both for an rsync and a cp [14:06] it really sounds like a hardware issue with the drive then [14:06] Personally I was leaning towards a hardware issue myself, but good to run a few suggested commands to show the issues [14:06] thanks cbreak, thanks JanC for your pointed, I'll RMA it ASAP [14:07] *pointers [14:10] it _could_ also be a software (firmware) issue as it's a fairly new line as you say, but that's their problem to solve then :) [14:11] windows: did you also try with a different kernel (e.g. booted from a live image) just to test? === chron0_ is now known as chron0 === Methos123 is now known as Methso === Methso is now known as Methos === pah is now known as pa [17:16] why does snap show an update to firefox but when i click on update all it gives me a window that there are no updates? i'm having a problem firefox, btw. === phryk_ is now known as phryk [17:24] eelstrebor: snap is terrible [17:24] you have to exit firefox, and then run sudo snap refresh [17:26] looks like snap is the only ubuntu (?) repository available for firefox? [22:18] tomreyn: I can understand many cases where it'd be impossible to support mint when the issue is software packages and configurations; but when it's brand new hardware, most versions of Linux face the same issues, dealing with the same open source drivers that are missing something due to hardware doing weird things.
