Psi-JackHummm.... Drag and Drop from Nautilus to Firefox (snap) doesn't work?01:55
=== chris14_ is now known as chris14
grydoes it give you an error message?01:59
Psi-JackNo, I'm trying to do it to a new Imgur post, and it's acting like it's responding, but does not receive.01:59
LuckyManI just drag an html file to firefox and it worked02:00
Psi-JackHmmm.. Nor does uploading directly, interesting.02:01
LuckyManPsi-Jack, what do you mean by uploading?02:02
Psi-JackI mean literally uploading...02:02
LuckyManuploading to where?02:02
rboxi always upload indirectly02:03
gryPsi-Jack: in nautilus, does changing to 'list view' help to make the drag and drop work?02:03
Psi-JackImgur, new post.02:03
gryand what ubuntu version is it?02:04
Psi-JackSheash, okay, Reboot worked fine. I think it was the changeover from moving /home over.02:04
gryis it working okay now02:04
Psi-JackWhich is weird and makes no sense, I did it all logged out and only as root, when it was off, but yeah, reboot "cleared" the issue.02:04
grycool02:04
gryare you using wayland still? or xorg?02:04
Psi-JackXorg on this computer. Wayland's on the Tabtop, this is the desktop I'm working on.02:05
gryokay. there was such issue reported with wayland, so this is why i asked. if the issue comes back, please ask again02:05
LuckyManI'm using wayland and I just made this: https://imgur.com/a/DVSLK3y02:06

Psi-JackI think somehow this is a random fluke.02:07
Psi-JackDepsite doing all the things right, logging out, pkilling my entire user session, logging in as root on console, finishing the move from /mnt/home to /home, nd remounting new /home, and logging back in, something still didn't clear up as expected, because when I re-launched firefox after the reboot, tabs were missing in Firefox on the restart,.02:08
Psi-JackSo session state didn't save.02:08
gryprobably firefox didn't like being pkilled02:09
gryit may have a session backup file lying around02:09
grysee https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-restore-browsing-session-backup02:09
Psi-JackI mean, it loaded back up repeatedly from closing and re-starting before the reboot.02:10
Psi-JackIt was after the reboot the session lacked about 2 tabs, both imgur's.02:10
LuckyManwhy move /mnt/home and why not just copy the relevant files?02:11

BluesKajHi all12:47
din0As far as trying to troubleshoot a freezing issue, ctrl-alt-f1 (or any ctrl-alt commands) don't work, what would cause that? The logs don't seem to be useful, it appears to be a _hard_ crash12:49
guivercdin0, you didn't provide Ubuntu product/release details which limits precision, but if the system is thrashing there can be a rather significant delay before commands will be actioned (SysRq commands are an exception)12:51
din0I also tried SysRq commands and they did nothing.  This is Linux Mint, so it might be specific to that, but figured I'd ask in here since it's a cousin.  I'll try over in #linuxmint12:53

ubottudin0: The Ubuntu channels can only provide support for Ubuntu and its official !flavors. Derivatives and other distributions use different software repositories and other software. din0Oh another IRC server entirely .. ok.  thanks12:54
leftyfbdin0: feel free to install ubuntu instead and we'll be happy to help with any issues you have12:54
din0I just might, this Mint install has been regularly and quietly hard crashing since installing it.  Can't ssh, no mouse, absolute tundra of a freeze12:56

isene24.04 on Dell XPS 15 (9530). Screen backlight adjustment works when I log into Ubuntu desktop, but cannot get it to work in my normal i3 session (no DE). Tried Light, xbacklight, ICC-brightness, xrandr... can briefly adjust the brightness, but it resets after a second. Fn-keys to control brightness works under Unity, but not in my i3-wm session. Can anyone point me to how I can make it work in i3?18:36

greatgatsbyHello.  Did a dist-upgrade from 20.04 to 22.04 (via ansible) and now I'm locked out of the host.  Trying to SSH in, I'm getting "System is going down.  Unprivileged users are not permitted to log in anymore".  This seems related to pam_nologin, but none of the files that are supposed to trigger this module exist.  Not sure what is causing this.  Any help appreciated.19:00

Guest55Hey peeps. I'm trying to locate some graphics drivers for an older dell laptop. Is anyone able to point me to some direction? It appears this laptop used to ship with Ubuntu preinstalled as well22:55
gordonjcpGuest55: what chipset does it use?22:57
gordonjcpor, what model is it?22:57
gordonjcpif it's a generic Intel chipset, chances are it doesn't need anything special22:58
Guest55gordonjcp, thanks for responding, here's what I found about it:https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InstallingUbuntuOnADellXPSM133022:59
gordonjcpwow, that *is* old22:59
sarnoldholy moly it says it's 64 bit https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/29761/intel-core2-duo-processor-t7500-4m-cache-2-20-ghz-800-mhz-fsb/specifications.html23:00
gordonjcpsarnold: it is23:00
Guest55I use it as a Firefox machine, and random things like writing, so it works perfectly with a ssd23:01
gordonjcpGuest55: yeah, I used to have a Macbook with similar specs, that was vastly improved in both Mac OSX and Linux by fitting an SSD23:01
gordonjcpGuest55: oooooh-kay23:02
gordonjcpso23:02
sarnoldif it's using a geforce card you might have some success with the neuvau driver or however the heck you spell that stupid french word :)23:02
gordonjcpyeah I'm just looking to see if Nouveau supports as far back as Tesla23:02
gordonjcpthat's ~18 years old23:02
sarnoldnvidia drops card support pretty agressively from their official drivers, so chances are good the closed-source stuff won't be helpful unless it's too old for me to recommend with firefox23:02
gordonjcpsarnold: nothing like as aggressively as AMD though23:03
sarnoldgordonjcp: oh?23:03
gordonjcpsarnold: you don't get binary drivers for AMD cards more than about two or three years old23:03
Bashing-omGuest55: Let's not guess around - pastebin the output of ' sudo lshw -C display '//see then what our options may be.23:04
Guest55sarnold, i was looking at the arch wiki regarding this laptop, and they seem to recommend using nouveau as well23:04
gordonjcpsarnold: I've still got NVidia Quadro P2000s in a couple of machines, that are fully supported in the latest NVidia binaries23:04
gordonjcpsarnold: but 20006? No, that won't be in there23:04
Guest55I see two cards, I'll post it23:05
gordonjcpyeah Tesla is NV50 family23:05
gordonjcpso that's fully supported in Nouveau and can even do CUDA apparently23:05
sarnold"tesla" feels like a brand-new nvidia to me, lol23:05
sarnoldtime dilation or something going on23:05
Guest55https://pastebin.com/2wEXanQD23:06
mutantebranding anything Tesla sounds like a bad idea nowadays23:06
gordonjcpmutante: you know what you call a stolen Tesla?23:06
gordonjcpan Edison23:06
mutantelol! good one23:06
gordonjcpgetting into -ot territory though23:07
gordonjcpGuest55: so yeah nouveau ought to give you pretty acceptable performance, it might even play minecraft, Blender won't be fun, it's unlikely that DaVinci Resolve will even get past the splash screen23:07
gordonjcpit'll be better than the Intel graphics card though23:08
gordonjcpI'd recommend a not-Ubuntu spin, like MATE or Xubuntu just to be a bit lighter on that CPU23:08
sarnoldand ram23:08
Guest55yeah, this laptop is the boss, I think it was expensive when it came out, but i got it for free. i think i'll get another one like it, maybe more uptodate, because I've dropped this one so many times, and it's still at it lol23:08
gordonjcpyup23:08
gordonjcpGuest55: most of my laptops are Thinkpads from the Core i5-2xxx era, cobbled together from bits from the ewaste skip at work23:09
Guest55yeah, this was supposed to be ewaste, for some unknown reason, so i had to rescue it and it has yet to die. it does have one bug but fixable by restarting. has anyone seen something like this, might be the reason why they deemed it ewaste, but sometimes when you start the machine, it seems like it starts with the wrong aspect ratio, and there's a23:12
Guest55black bar on the side of the monitor.23:12
Guest55nothing to do with the OS, it happens in bios too.23:12
gordonjcpyou could try reseating the flexi into the LCD panel and motherboard23:14
gordonjcpor if it happens infrequently enough, just leave it for fear of making it worse23:15
sarnoldoh that's weird; i haven't got a clue *why* but i'm curious if I can guess how it shows up -- does it happen reliably on the first boot, but then works fine if you reboot it after that?23:15
Guest55to me it seems like it's a connection issue somewhere, because (this might be placebo) but the issue happens less when the monitor is facing down, and not up. it doesn't happen every boot, maybe like 4 out of 10 times, most of the time i just ctrl+alt+del on the grub screen and it goes away,  but i've seen it happen multiple times in a row rarely.23:18
Guest55using hibernation and sleep in windows also avoids the problem23:18
sarnoldthat last line is *really* surprising :)23:19
Guest55haa ha, i know right.23:20
Guest55i did open this latop bunch of times to clean, swap bios batteries and such, so it's probably not one of the cables that had to be handled during that process, otherwise the problem should've gone away, anyway. I'm looking for a guide how to install noveau, i haven't done that before23:23
sarnoldGuest55: i'm not sure, but try sudo ubuntu-drivers --free-only23:24
sarnoldsee what that does :)23:24
Guest55you mean list?23:26
pragmaticenigmaluna_3: The EXIF data was still present in the file, shotwell probably has a feature to remove that when editing the photo. If you don't tell shotwell to do anything, it will only appened and update attributes its responsible for. But things like image source will stay present in the file, as well as and Geolocation, device information.23:26
sarnoldGuest55: oh yeah :/ it needs a verb, too, doesn't it? if the list shows that noveau can be installed that way, then it should also be able to be installed that way23:28
pragmaticenigmaluna_3: to remove EXIF from a photo without opening a photo editor see this posting: https://askubuntu.com/a/26081123:28
Guest55sarnold, the list command showed nothing23:29
Guest55i also tried devices, also nothing23:29
sarnold:(23:29
sarnoldi'm not sure how to do it without the tool's help :(23:29
Guest55huh, well at least i know what to attempt, there's probably a guide somewhere23:31
