Diagondpkg --configure failing on nvidia-dkms: http://termbin.com/8z4w  suggestions?00:56
sarnoldDiagon: read the log /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/390.157/build/make.log and see why it failed00:59
Diagonsarnold / some post install script, but I'm clueless: http://termbin.com/0yma01:00
sarnoldDiagon: I think this is the most important line:01:02
sarnold/var/lib/dkms/nvidia/390.157/build/common/inc/nv-mm.h:164:45: error: passing argument 1 of โ€˜get_user_pages_remoteโ€™ from incompatible pointer type [-Werror=incompatible-pointer-types]01:02
sarnoldDiagon: probably there was an update to the kernel or an update to the module that broke this -- and fixing it is probably beyond the usual user's abilities01:03
sarnoldDiagon: I suggest filing a bug with 'ubuntu-bug linux'01:03
sarnoldDiagon: be sure to attach this log to the bug report once it's created01:04
sarnoldDiagon: you can probably select an older kernel at the grub boot menu -- try hitting the left shift key a bunch when booting, I think that makes the menu visible01:04
DiagonWill report bug, but ... I just shifted from nouveau to nvidia.  This might be an old bug.  Unlikely the just previous kernel works.01:05
Diagonsarnold ^^01:06
sarnoldDiagon: oh :(01:06
sarnoldwell .. you might still get lucky01:06
DiagonK.  Will try.01:06

Diagonoerheks / I want to use nouveau, but it's causing all kinds of trouble, including crashes.02:30
DiagonThat's why I'm trying nvidia.02:31
oerhekshttps://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-39002:31
enigma9o7https://paste.debian.net/1323401/ rmadison works better than that bot02:31
oerheksDiagon, what happens if you switch back to x11 session?02:32
AurulentGuys, what are some good programs for tinkering and learning the Linux environment?02:32
enigma9o7Diagon: I use nvidia-340 for similar reasons... nouveau causes my machine to freeze every day or two... never happens with nvidia-340 proprietary.02:32
enigma9o7Aurulent: bash02:32
Diagonoerheks / I've been using X all along.02:32
AurulentBash? Is that an ide?02:32
enigma9o7No, its a shell.02:33
enigma9o7Command interpreter.02:33
Diagonoerhekes / more than freezing.  Crashing.  even corrupted btrfs.02:33
AurulentOh dope. And a shell is? I know, I know. Google is free... but I like to also talk to people so there's that.02:34
AurulentNever mind. You already answered that question.02:34
Diagonenigma9o7 / what's the implication of not having nvidia-dkms?  Do you know?02:35
oerheksa start to our docs desktop and server https://help.ubuntu.com/02:35
enigma9o7Yes.02:35
DiagonK.  Can you share?02:35
enigma9o7If you don't have a dkms version, when you get a kernel update, it can't rebuild the nvidia driver for you, so your graphics will break, black screen boot.02:35
oerheksdkms helps building the driver when you get a kernel update02:35
DiagonI mean, I can't get that to install, but my machine boots.02:36
DiagonO.I.C.02:36
AurulentHere's a stupid question. Is there a way to create a seamless ecosystem between linux (specifically Ubuntu) devices similar to how Apple detects multiple devices and then seamlessly combines the screens to create a seamless environment between the different systems? For example one mac on one monitor would allow the mouse and keyboard to work with another system as if they were the same system)02:36
enigma9o7since nouveau is blacklisted when you install nvidia package, you will have nothing that can do graphics, so will just see black.  although you can usually switch to tty.02:36
DiagonOk, so how could I fix it if I go to tty?  I could be willing to put up with that until I can get 24.04 to work.02:37
enigma9o7You could probably use vnc for that, aurulent.02:37
enigma9o7but graphics would be going thru the network instead of direct from gpu so you couldn't really do fast moving stuff well.02:38
Diagon(Though I do have a iGPU also - would it use that?)02:38
enigma9o7Diagon, you can also select to boot previous kernel from advanced boot options in grub.02:38
enigma9o7To get to tty, ctrl+alt+f2 usually works.02:38
DiagonAh, right.  So once in, how would I fix the broken nvidia?02:39
enigma9o7there's a tty at all of them, f1 to f7, but x or wayland or loginmanager or root console etc may be using some, so if f2 doesn't give you login prompt, try another.02:39
DiagonYup, I got that part.  Thanks.02:39
AurulentInteresting. Is there a piece of software better built for this purpose? If not, how complicated do you think it would be? I would assume very since drivers would have to be created for many many different sets of hardware combinations, no?02:39
AurulentI could just be really dumb and this idea could be next to impossible. I know Apple has the advantage of the M series chips. That probably makes this so much easier.02:40
ravage1Aurulent: maybe https://github.com/htrefil/rkvm02:40
DiagonWould I have to install --reinstall the nvidia driver, and have it break again on nvidia-dkms?  enigma9o702:40
Aurulentravage1 that's really close, the only difference is a keyboard shortcut rather than the different machines giving you the option to orient their respective screens and allowing you to just move the mouse and keyboard around them. But this sounds like what apple does where one machine is the server and talks to the rest of the machines.02:42
ravage1The other option is https://github.com/debauchee/barrier02:47
ravage1I think that's packaged with Ubuntu02:47
ravage1!package barrier02:47
enigma9o7Diagon: I wasn't following your original problem, kinda jumped in the middle, why isn't the driver installing normally for you?02:47
ravage1!info barrier02:47

Diagonenigma9o7 / nvidia-dkms won't compile.  Various complaints.  Here's mine: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed-hwe-6.5/+bug/207317403:03
-ubottu:#ubuntu- Launchpad bug 2073174 in linux-signed-hwe-6.5 (Ubuntu) "nvidia-dkms bug" [Undecided, New]03:03
DiagonSo the question is, if I just put up with it, how can I fix it every time the kernel gets upgraded?03:04
enigma9o7Do you need the 6.5/hwe kernel for some other hardware?03:05
enigma9o7I bet it'd work if you reverted to generic kernel.03:05
DiagonI don't think so.  Seems it may work in 6.3: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-390/+bug/2019979/  enigma9o703:06
-ubottu:#ubuntu- Launchpad bug 2019979 in nvidia-graphics-drivers-515-server (Ubuntu Mantic) "nvidia-dkms-* FTBS with linux 6.3" [Undecided, Fix Released]03:06
enigma9o7If you removed hwe package (and reinstalled linux-image-generic if you removed it) then you'd be at kernel 5.15, which probably works.03:08
DiagonI see.  Is that hwe kernel from ubuntu pro? Not sure how I got it there in the first place?03:10
enigma9o7Usually you have to install it manually, so not sure how you'd get it accidentally.03:10
enigma9o7If I were you, i'd "sudo apt install linux-image-generic" then "sudo apt remove linux-image-generic-hwe-22.04 --autoremove" then reboot03:12
DiagonHmm.  Ok, but if I stick at an earlier kernel, then ... maybe I don't need -dkms, since the kernel won't be upgraded anyway, right?  enighma9o703:12
enigma9o7no, there are still regular security updates.03:12
DiagonI.C.  T.Y.03:13
enigma9o7right now its at 5.15.0.116 but 5.15.0.118 is in proposed and will move to security shortly03:13
enigma9o7and thats when dkms will be triggered is when there are security updates for existing kernel, regardless which series your on.03:14
enigma9o7you're03:14
enigma9o7it updates every week or two it seems, just a guess, never tracked it03:15
DiagonAlright.  Maybe I'll try that.  I suppose after I remove hwe and install -generic, I need to dpkg --configure again, to get nvidia and -dkms properly configured?03:16

AavarJanC: I can't disconnect. That was my initial question. Is there some way to reset the terminal so, that I can use it again. As it stands, I have to close the terminal ant open it again.11:36
JanCsee the ssh manual under ESCAPE CHARACTERS11:37
JanCyou can enter ssh commands prefixed by "~", e.g. "~." is disconnect11:41
JanCthere must be a newline before the "~" also11:41
JanC(but usually that would already be the case if it just sits waiting for a command in bash)11:41
AavarWow! It actually timed out after half an hour after the resume.11:41
JanCyou might also want to look at ServerAliveInterval11:42
JanCand ServerAliveCountMax11:42
JanCOpenSSH has lots of useful configuration options (all explained in the fine manual :) )11:43
JanC'ssh_config' manual11:44
JanCthe reason why it hangs is that the server detects that your client is no longer there & disconnects, but your client i asleep at that point, so isn't aware of that...11:45
oerheksJanC, does  ServerAliveInterval work when the system sleeps?11:45
JanCno, but it should detect the broken connection soon after11:46
JanCor at least sooner11:46
JanCmaybe the values are just wrong here11:48
JanCthere are also other options that could affect this11:49
AavarThank you. I will get dinner and continue the search for the issue later :)11:53

mcphailAavar: you may want to look at using screen or tmux when you log in. You can disconnect from screen or tmux when you want to shut your machine and reconnect when you restart12:20
gryAavar: with screen or tmux, the ssh connection would still die; after resume, ssh to the server again, and re-open the screen or tmux which includes your processes started previously12:29
JanCgry: the problem is that his connection takes long to time-out on the client side...12:33
