unkleboneheadIs this still active or no? I'm interested in getting it going.21:06
greg-gthe LoCo? no, not really. I started it way back when. Then I moved to California and cmaloney took over. He recently passed away. This channel is a remnant of that era. But! Anyone is free to organize LoCo activities in here.21:17
jrwrenit also kinda didn't need to exist in SEMI because of #mug21:18
unkleboneheadSorry to hear about him passing. That sucks. 22:13
unkleboneheadWhat is the #mug?22:13
unkleboneheadYou mean the michigan user group?22:15
greg-gjrwren: 100%22:51
greg-gunklebonehead: yeah, Craig was also very active in MUG.22:51
unkleboneheadDo any of you have any opposition to me grabbing the reigns of the Ubunutu LoCo then? I will be gearing it more towards "new to Linux on the desktop" types of people.  and 23:03
greg-gare there active LoCos anymore?23:04
unkleboneheadAnd not so much to the server side of things. Most of my experience with Linux the last 14 yrs has been desktop usage and doing my best to avoid the terminal.23:05
unkleboneheadThere are active outside the US.23:05
unkleboneheadThe Arizona LoCo is the only one in the US that is apparently active23:06
unkleboneheadThere is also someone who restarting the Illinois LoCo as well. Was just talking with him earlier today.23:06
unkleboneheadDoes anybody know what happened with all the LoCo's? A few years ago I remember seeing them everywhere. Now that I'm interested in sticking with Ubunutu and not hopping to a new distro every week. Theres hardly any left. Lol.23:10
greg-gI think the desktop linux world changed. Ubuntu really started something in 2004, but now that Canonical isn't as focused on the desktop side, they aren't pushing the LoCos (as I as I know). The financial support, dedicated staff to helping you, and going to the Ubuntu Developer Summit (sometimes) were all really useful to keep momentum going.23:26
unkleboneheadAhh, that makes sense. Budget cut backs and people lost interest. 23:28
greg-gand I think the community just kind of moved on too. It's a both/and kind of thing I think.23:30
unkleboneheadAre you guys not posting your meetings to YouTube anymore?23:30
unkleboneheadThe mug Im talking about23:30
greg-gpeople got the linux desktop that just works* (from many sources now, even), so there's less of a loyalty as well23:31
unkleboneheadVery true23:31
greg-gI thought MUG was, but I don't follow closely.23:31
unkleboneheadI distro hopped all that time. I did spend about 2 yrs with PopOS. That was my longest stint. 23:32
unkleboneheadWhat happened with cmaloney if I can ask?23:34
greg-gcancer.23:35
unkleboneheadOh that sucks. I lost my best friend a couple of months ago to stomach cancer.23:35
unkleboneheadHe was my best friend for almost 30 years. He went to the doctor for stomach cramps and he was gone in a months time.23:37
unkleboneheadSo are you or anybody in here going to need to be the contact for when I ask to be the admin of this LoCo?23:41
greg-gmaybe? I'm not sure how it works anymore23:54
unkleboneheadI'll ask them and we'll see what happens. I just dont want to step on anybody's toes being his passing was so soon. (I found the post on mug.org). 23:57
unkleboneheadIm sure the pain is still pretty fresh.23:57
