[01:12] Good evening? [01:13] its been 2 years since I used kubuntu, not sure if anyone still uses this chat [01:14] some do [01:14] hi oran [01:14] regardeless, I just did a clean install of 24.04, and I only have 1 account on the machine with passord, but for some reason I can su - to go into root. It says my password is invalid. I can sudo, but only get partial access. some things still say permission denied [01:14] Hi oerheks [01:16] Did I miss something in the setup for establishing root access? [01:18] no 1st account should do [01:18] run updates, see what happens [01:18] apt dist-upgrade [01:19] ok [01:19] sudo or no? [01:19] yes, ofcourse [01:20] ok done [01:20] o changes [01:21] is the proper command still su - [01:21] sudo -i [01:21] su - for debian i guess [01:21] yeah i was running deb 12 [01:21] sudo - i did it for me lol thanks [01:22] it is about environment preserving [01:22] have fun! [01:22] tyty [01:48] with kubuntu is it possible to use konsole to force static ip like I was able to do with debian 12? [01:49] Yes, you can definitely have a static IP. [01:50] I'm not sure if I have the steps handy. Let me look. If I do, they're mighty old and may or may not still work. [01:51] Here's my page on it. It's seven years old, but I followed it successfully for Kubuntu 22.04 LTS and currently have a static IP: https://mostlylinux.wordpress.com/network/staticip/ [01:51] THANK YOU!! [01:53] A better bet is probably to go to the Ubuntu wiki for the latest instructions: https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/configuring-networks#static-ip-address-assignment [01:54] I should probably follow them, too, to make sure my setup is modern. Heh. [01:58] im used to remoting in to my sql from HIedi on my windows machine, can you reccomend a good database tool to use locally [02:00] I use DB Browser for SQLite. It's the sqlitebrowser package. [02:01] ill give it a try, ty [02:01] My pleasure. It works well for me, but I'm not a hard-core database person. I just dabble. [02:01] I just need it for modifying a game server im hosting [02:05] You'll probably like it. Its interface is simple enough that I was able to do what I needed to do and I know next to nothing about it. [03:15] is there a command to exit root without having to close my current konsole? [03:32] I believe typing exit returns you to a normal prompt. You can try it and you should see the prompt change. [03:32] oh lol no kidding... [03:32] thats .. i feel kinda dumb haha [03:33] I also have a note that you can type logout to get back to a normal prompt. [03:33] like I did when I finally realized that cd .. was how I back up a directory path... [03:33] I was closing konsole every time I needed to go backwards [03:33] Heh. I know. There's too much for us to ever remember. That's why I make a billion notes. [03:33] exit though ... smh [03:34] i feel like I should know better haha [03:34] control-D is eof (input) [03:34] same as exit! [03:34] Talking about exiting things, I found this today after having seen it years ago and it's as funny today as it was then. If you've ever tried vim without being prepared, you'll identify with this (I sure do): https://medium.com/free-code-camp/one-out-of-every-20-000-stack-overflow-visitors-is-just-trying-to-exit-vim-5a6b6175e7b6 [03:35] haha [03:36] its funny because in mysql I was getting frustrated typing exit and getting -> until I realized I had to end it all there with ; [03:36] I mean I knew I had to end everything else in it with ;, but I just assumed exit was exit [03:37] like no means no [03:37] ; feels like dr evil drinking tea with the pinky pointed up [03:38] Heh. It's just horrible. I prefer simple things like exit or x. [03:38] Im actually kinda fond of cntrl x after using nano to edit configs in debian 12 [03:38] its oddly satisfying [03:39] Yeah, that one is fine, too. I've managed to learn it with nano. [03:40] ok, so I have the instructions I need to allow remote connections with mariadb, but I removed maria db and installed mysql instead. can anyone link me to the instruction set for that? [03:40] the command lines dont translate over [03:41] I'm not familiar with mariadb. [03:42] thats ok, I deleted it. its a derivative of mysql commenly used on debian based linux [03:42] Ah. [03:42] How are you liking Kubuntu as compared with Debian? [03:43] only reason I removed it for the straight instal of mysql is because the server devs for teh software im hosting said in teh next few patches they are discontinueing support for mariadb due to changes comeing [03:43] its more or less the same [03:43] minor changes [03:43] well I say that from a position of ignorance [03:43] Yeah, I don't like it when they change or take away software. [03:43] im not versed well in either [03:43] I knew I liked kubuntu because I was on 22.04 2 years ago. [03:44] That's the best position to be in for making such judgements. [03:44] I liked the relative ease of everything except teh sql stuff on headless debian too though [03:45] I consider this just better becasue when I cant figure out the console command to do something here, and I cant find a resource for it, I can usually just use dolphin and go straight to what im looking for with plasma [03:45] If you haven't played around with desktop effects in settings, try Magic Lamp and Falling Apart. I can't live without them. [03:45] love having plasma as my "im an idiot backup" [03:46] well im mainly going to be using this machine as my server so I dont want to go any mroe resource heavy than plasma already is. If I get to liking it too much I might dual boot my windows machine with kubuntu aswell and then play around more with the kde customizations [03:47] Good idea. [04:54] Soo I was trying to set my ssh up like I did on Debian, and while I know its not the same, im kinda lost. I was looking for sshd conf but it doesnt exist, I do have ssh_config but within I was looking for #permitrootlogin prohibit-password [04:54] I dont see that line [04:54] is there something vastly different that needs to be changed here to enable ssh in from my windows machine via putty? [05:03] Never mind, I didnt have server isntalled. my bad [06:20] Hi guys [06:20] Is it safe to upgrade from 22.04? [07:01] LEM === emanuel is now known as emanuel_ [12:20] Hi all [14:46] end of month ig (re @Omarvx211: Is it safe to upgrade from 22.04?) [14:51] on a personap pc yes, but not on the job or on commercial application type settings [14:53] oops sorry misrad your OS version...by all means upgrade 22.10 or even more recent releases [14:53] @plutorocks^ [14:55] https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2024/08/first-ubuntu-24-04-lts-point-release-delayed [17:46] MUMZ [17:46] COB0 [17:46] COBO [17:46] 7VL9 [20:11] How to display btrfs snapshots in grub so as to restore a snapshot from the grub screen? [20:27] I managed to display btrfs snapshots but I was unable to restore a snapshot from the grub screen. The error message reads: 'EFI stub: WARNING: Failed to measure data for event 1: 0800000000000000b EFI stub. What does this error message mean? How can it be fixed in Kubuntu 24.04? [21:39] anyone here good at troubleshooting mysql service failures? I copied the journal and the other thing it pointed to but my limited knowledge cant see and obvious direction to go to from here [21:42] oran: just wondering, do you think the guys at #mysql may have something? [21:43] ive been back on linux for 4 days after 2 years away, ill be honest I dont know if that is another chat or a support website or something else. I am more than willing to go to the right place, I just dont know how to get there [21:43] brb dog needs to go on a death start trench run [21:44] star* [21:44] oran: ohh I see, the dog is going to wallk you, ok, whilst you think you're walking the dog [21:48] something like that [21:48] back [21:48] tell yah for a dog with a belly full of staples, he acts like he didnt almost die last week [21:49] anyway, sorry for my ignorance on the subject [21:49] oh, huh just click on it and it adds a channel [21:49] cool, ty [21:52] hey, whats a nickserv account? [21:52] oran #mysql Cannot send message to channel (+R) - you need to be logged into your NickServ account === oran is now known as oran_ [22:11] ohhh that [22:11] oran: yeah, forgot, some channels are in +r (registered only) mode, to avoid any channel floods [22:12] oran: you just type /msg nickserv help register [22:13] oran: and the services will list you how to register your nick, usually typing /msg nickserv register PASSCODE or so, and it requires your email, to send a verification
