mozzy3711Anyone have a clue why my windows install disappeared and grub didn’t install automatically when I installed Ubuntu? I thought that it did. I partitioned the drive myself so I know windows is still there. But even my BIOS boot selection screen doesn’t have Windows as an option. Once I was able to us04:10
mozzy3711e Grub Customizer to add it back but can’t remember how to do it. I believe they were both UEFI installs. It was a fresh windows 10 install, rebooted a couple times, then installed Ubuntu (latest LTS). Genuinely confused.04:10
enigma9o7enable os prober to add windows to grub menu04:11
enigma9o7assuming you managed to get grub installed later04:11
enigma9o7as to why grub didnt install automatically perhaps you selected the wrong drive04:11
mozzy3711Only one drive in play. But I haven’t messed with OS prober before so I will do some research on that -  that’s why I love Linux there’s always something out there.04:13
enigma9o7edit /etc/default/grub and set OS_PROBER=true iirc, then sudo update-grub04:13
enigma9o7it should tell you right then if it finds windows04:14
mozzy3711Oh yeah it looks like it was but off between the last time I installed a release. Huh. That makes total sense04:14
mozzy3711Hmm. Looks like it didn’t find Windows but let me try an actual boot to see what shows up04:22
mozzy3711Well dang now grub doesn’t even show up lol. Just boots me right into Ubuntu04:24
mozzy3711Hold…right shift at boot?04:25
Bashing-ommozzy3711: UEFI is escape that grub looks for - spam - very narrow window :D04:26
mozzy3711Oh I can spam it hard04:26
mozzy3711Yep. Weird. No windows.04:28
mozzy3711Ubuntu and memtest. Hmm.04:28
mozzy3711This is a first for me. May just have to make a windows recovery USB from my server and start over from there. I’m certain it’s a problem between the keyboard and the back of the chair04:32
mozzy3711Thankfully it’s just my gaming machine so not a huge stressor04:33
Bashing-ommozzy3711: [ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo "EFI boot on HDD" || echo "Legacy boot on HDD" - says what ?04:44
mozzy3711Legacy boot on HDD is the response04:45
mozzy3711@bashing-om: sorry thought I’d @ you04:46
mozzy3711Bashing-om:04:47
mozzy3711There we go sorry, IRC on iOS is totally new for me04:47
mozzy3711Bring me back to the days of mIRC lol04:47
Bashing-ommozzy3711: While UEFI can pick up legacy - the reverse is not true - were me I would reinstall buntu *in* efi mode - beyond my experience to tell how to change the install over to UEFI from a lragacy install.04:54
Bashing-omlegacy*04:55
mozzy3711Understood. No clue how to install it in EFI mode but I bet Google knows.04:55
Bashing-ommozzy3711: How you boot the installer is how it installs - in Bios set to boot EFI only.04:56
mozzy3711Oooh. Good to know. I’ll track that down in my BIOS settings. Though gigabytes are terrible for BIOS lol04:57
Bashing-om!uefi | mozzy371104:57
ubottumozzy3711: UEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. It is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. blinkyHow do I set sumatrapdf as the default pdf reader on Ubuntu?05:01
mozzy3711Thank you! I’m going to start with a fresh windows installation and build from there again.05:05
Bashing-ommozzy3711: A plan :D - Windows install first - else will wipe out the buntu boot code - nasty Windows :D05:06
xanguablinky: isn't Sumatra only for Windows?05:07
blinkyxangua, no it is availabe on snapstore and usable via wine I guess.05:08
blinkyxangua, I have sumatrapdf installed on Ubuntu. The only problem is how to set it as the default for pdf.05:09
blinkyxangua, here's the link - https://snapcraft.io/sumatrapdf05:24
blinkydo you know how to make it the default pdf reader?05:25
xanguablinky: sorry no, I don't even use wine05:38
xanguaOr see the need of Sumatra in Linux, I do use it on Windows05:39

SDDM_probsHello, everyone. 1) what was called the app that auto-scanned all the installed OS on the connected HDDs and added them to the bootloader? Also provided a GUI for editing bootloader entries. 2) Can I make the system directly load into a cmd session (instead of a GUI one) from the initial start-up screen, if it hasn't already been configured to do15:19
SDDM_probsthat in the OS' config files, and the OS' GUI session can't be loaded ATM?15:19
tomreynunless you're looking for software provided by ubuntu, such as os-prober, you might be better off asking in #linux15:23
SDDM_probsthe problems are occurring on my ubuntu OS, so asking here may nd up being more efficient later on.15:26

stradmanso as it happens, I crashed during an ubuntu release upgrade and broke some packages. now I am left fixing them, sudo apt --fix-broken install returns errors and dpkg --configure -a also returns errors, what is my next line of action?19:39

toddcpost errors19:41
stradman54sorry dropped out for a sec19:44
ChrisAHello, I need some help after an upgrade.19:44
stradman54okay19:45
ChrisAYesterday, I did an upgrade from ubuntu 16.04 to ubuntu 24.04.19:45
ChrisA(From 16 to 18 to 20 to 22 and 24).19:45
stradman54dude you are literally me, but a more successful version of me19:45
ChrisABut my unity desktop is broken.19:45
stradman54i crashed literally on the first step19:45
stradman54so chris, do you have any kind of gui or is it all stuck?19:46
ChrisAI can log to the gnome desktop and use the desktop and apps.19:46
stradman54cool, what's the issue then?19:46
ChrisABut when I try to log into the unity desktop, the background shows, but no top bar, no launcher, nothing else.19:47
toddcyou may also want to consider a clean install as not all backend parts can be upgraded and a lot of changes have happend since 16.0419:47
ChrisAI tried uninstalling and purging the ubuntu-unity-desktop packages, and reinstalling them. But no change.19:47
ChrisAI know I could do a clean install, but I would like to keep all my install apps as-is.19:48
toddc!paste | ChrisA19:48

ChrisASo that's why I ask here if someone knows what I could be missing.19:48
stradman54I feel your pai chris19:50
toddcpost all errors please so we can see what parts are missing  sudo apt update errors or logs ect19:50
stradman54co incident that even i started upgrading from 16 to 22 today only19:50
ChrisAThere are no errors in the packages.19:50
ChrisAI mean, I checked with synaptic package manager.19:50
ChrisANo broken packages anymore.19:51
ChrisANo packages that need to be updated...19:51
ravagetry to create a new user. see if that can login19:52
ChrisAI tried that too.19:52
ravageif it works you need to kill all unity related data because migration did not work out19:52
stradman54I crashed on 16.04 to 18.04 :(19:52
ravagei dont think you will find many unity users here really19:52
ChrisAEven with the new user profile, only the background appears.19:52
ravagein general multiple LTS upgrades are usually not the best idea19:53
ravagebackup your files and do a fresh installation19:53
ChrisARavage, that's what I suspected.19:53
ravagei usually just backup /home and restore whatever i miss over time19:53
ChrisAFor what I can see after launching "top" in another terminal (ctrl+alt+f1),19:54
ChrisAthe culprit seems to be the compiz process that tries to launch, but crashes.19:55
ravagehave not heard that word in 10 years or so19:56
stradman54how to resolve this : https://bpa.st/MAOQ19:56
ravagestradman54: backup your files and reinstall. this is really not worth the struggle19:58
ravageeven if you resolve this you still have 2 more versions to upgrade19:58
stradman54ravage it's 100 GB of data, it would be painful to do it file by file :(20:00
ravageuse rsync20:00
stradman54can rsync send all to Gdrive?20:00
ravageuh no idea20:01
ravagegdrive is a propriatary protocol20:01
ravagebut im sure someone wrote a wrapper20:01
ravagebut could be hard to install that in that state of the system20:01
ravagebut im sure you have a backup drive you usually use right?20:02
stradman54that's why I would be more interested in stabilising the system, i guess I just have to remove the faulty packages20:02
stradman54ravage no :( this one is a old laptop i haven't fired up in months20:03
ravagethen get any external HDD/SSD with a USB connector for your backups20:03
ravageit is worth every $20:04
stradman54instead I am paying google :(20:05
ravagei really dont know how to mount google20:05
ravagei know there are tools for it20:06
ravageyou may be able to install that from a 24.04 live USB20:06
ravageand copy your files over from there20:06
stradman54that sounds interesting20:06
ravagehttps://ostechnix.com/mount-google-drive-using-rclone-in-linux/20:07
ravagerclone seems to support it20:07
stradman54ravage just sharing my dpkg output : https://bpa.st/KFVQ , is it even fixable?20:10
disgruntIs there any documentation for Ubuntu for "advanced users"?20:22
disgruntOr for System Administrators?20:22
leftyfbdisgrunt: not exactly. In what sense?20:24
leftyfbdisgrunt: it's best to have a goal in mind and find documentation for that20:24
disgrunt:(20:25
leftyfbdisgrunt: what is it you're trying to accomplish exactly?20:25
disgruntleftyfb:  I currently have a custom 22.04 install with it and Windows both encrypted on the same HD using TPM.  I am debating upgrading to 24.04 and would like to get the /boot partition encrypted as well.  It's also using btrfs and has snap stripped out.  Ubuntu is all-in on snap.20:29
disgruntleftyfb:  I'm just trying to get info to be honest.20:30
leftyfbdisgrunt: what info exactly?20:30
leftyfbdisgrunt: if you ask me, I would wipe ubuntu 22.04 and install 24.04 from scratch if you need it as custom as you have it20:31
ravageThe Ubuntu 24.04 installer is not that customizable20:32
disgruntleftyfb:  That's what I would be doing.  But the installer does not allow installing Ubuntu and Windows on the same drive with full disk encryption.20:32
disgruntravage:  Exactly.20:32
ravageSo you may not even be able to replicate it on a new installation20:32
leftyfbdisgrunt: it will let you encrypt ubuntu entirely20:32
ravageThat is still experimental20:32
disgruntleftyfb:  On the same drive as Windows?20:32
leftyfbyes20:32
ravageNever tried it with dual boot20:33
leftyfbyou use LVM and encrypt the LVM volume20:33
ravageThat still leaves boot unencrypted right?20:33
ravageAnd that's not his current setup20:33
leftyfbnot anymore, no20:33
leftyfbit does it all in one go20:33
disgruntleftyfb:  Does it require me to disable BitLocker before installation?20:34
leftyfbdisgrunt: not unless you want to access files on Windows from Ubuntu20:34
disgruntThat's not what the end-user documentation said.20:34
ravageI'm still not 100% confident that all this will just work with the new installer but I may be wrong20:35
disgruntravage:  That's why I wanted technical documentation.20:35
leftyfbadvanced users would just try it out and restore from backup if anything goes wrong20:35
ravageSo far it let me down with anything that is not a very default setup20:35
disgruntleftyfb:  I respectfully disagree.20:36
disgruntTry it and see is horrible advice... RTFM is an acronym for a reason.20:36
disgruntThanks all for the input.20:36
stradman54when installing 24.04, do i need to delete the prev ubuntu 16.04 partition by myself or does it do it by itself?20:52
younderWhen installing you get the option to delete the old version or keep it.20:53
stradman54so it just wipes out the old partition and data right?20:53
younderIt re-formats the drive and then installs the new version. You can also choose to manually create the partitions.20:55
ravagebut yes is has a "wipe everything" option20:55
younderIt is probably best to follow a video of a install or written instruction if you have never done it before, just so you know what to expect.20:56
younderMake sure it is the same version as you are installing. 24.04 has a new installer so it is a bit different from earlier versions.20:58
stradman54I would actually be having the iso on the prev ubuntu install partition not on a usb stick20:59
