I thought that it did. I partitioned the drive myself so I know windows is still there. But even my BIOS boot selection screen doesn’t have Windows as an option. Once I was able to us [04:10] e Grub Customizer to add it back but can’t remember how to do it. I believe they were both UEFI installs. It was a fresh windows 10 install, rebooted a couple times, then installed Ubuntu (latest LTS). Genuinely confused. [04:11] enable os prober to add windows to grub menu [04:11] assuming you managed to get grub installed later [04:11] as to why grub didnt install automatically perhaps you selected the wrong drive [04:13] Only one drive in play. But I haven’t messed with OS prober before so I will do some research on that - that’s why I love Linux there’s always something out there. [04:13] edit /etc/default/grub and set OS_PROBER=true iirc, then sudo update-grub [04:14] it should tell you right then if it finds windows [04:14] Oh yeah it looks like it was but off between the last time I installed a release. Huh. That makes total sense [04:22] Hmm. Looks like it didn’t find Windows but let me try an actual boot to see what shows up [04:24] Well dang now grub doesn’t even show up lol. Just boots me right into Ubuntu [04:25] Hold…right shift at boot? [04:26] mozzy3711: UEFI is escape that grub looks for - spam - very narrow window :D [04:26] Oh I can spam it hard [04:28] Yep. Weird. No windows. [04:28] Ubuntu and memtest. Hmm. [04:32] This is a first for me. May just have to make a windows recovery USB from my server and start over from there. [19:45] (From 16 to 18 to 20 to 22 and 24). [19:45] dude you are literally me, but a more successful version of me [19:45] But my unity desktop is broken. [19:47] you may also want to consider a clean install as not all backend parts can be upgraded and a lot of changes have happend since 16.04 [19:47] I tried uninstalling and purging the ubuntu-unity-desktop packages, and reinstalling them. But no change. [19:48] I know I could do a clean install, but I would like to keep all my install apps as-is. [19:53] in general multiple LTS upgrades are usually not the best idea [19:53] backup your files and do a fresh installation [19:53] Ravage, that's what I suspected. [20:22] Is there any documentation for Ubuntu for "advanced users"? [20:22] Or for System Administrators? [20:24] disgrunt: not exactly. In what sense? [20:24] disgrunt: it's best to have a goal in mind and find documentation for that [20:25] :( [20:25] disgrunt: what is it you're trying to accomplish exactly? [20:29] leftyfb: I currently have a custom 22.04 install with it and Windows both encrypted on the same HD using TPM. I am debating upgrading to 24.04 and would like to get the /boot partition encrypted as well. It's also using btrfs and has snap stripped out. Ubuntu is all-in on snap. [20:30] leftyfb: I'm just trying to get info to be honest. [20:30] disgrunt: what info exactly? [20:31] disgrunt: if you ask me, I would wipe ubuntu 22.04 and install 24.04 from scratch if you need it as custom as you have it [20:32] The Ubuntu 24.04 installer is not that customizable [20:32] leftyfb: That's what I would be doing. But the installer does not allow installing Ubuntu and Windows on the same drive with full disk encryption. [20:32] ravage: Exactly. [20:32] So you may not even be able to replicate it on a new installation [20:32] disgrunt: it will let you encrypt ubuntu entirely [20:32] That is still experimental [20:32] leftyfb: On the same drive as Windows? [20:32] yes [20:33] Never tried it with dual boot [20:33] you use LVM and encrypt the LVM volume [20:33] That still leaves boot unencrypted right? [20:33] And that's not his current setup [20:33] not anymore, no [20:33] it does it all in one go [20:34] leftyfb: Does it require me to disable BitLocker before installation? [20:34] disgrunt: not unless you want to access files on Windows from Ubuntu [20:34] That's not what the end-user documentation said. [20:35] I'm still not 100% confident that all this will just work with the new installer but I may be wrong [20:35] ravage: That's why I wanted technical documentation. [20:35] advanced users would just try it out and restore from backup if anything goes wrong [20:35] So far it let me down with anything that is not a very default setup [20:36] leftyfb: I respectfully disagree. [20:36] Try it and see is horrible advice... RTFM is an acronym for a reason. [20:36] Thanks all for the input. [20:52] when installing 24.04, do i need to delete the prev ubuntu 16.04 partition by myself or does it do it by itself? [20:53] When installing you get the option to delete the old version or keep it. [20:53] so it just wipes out the old partition and data right? [20:55] It re-formats the drive and then installs the new version. You can also choose to manually create the partitions. [20:55] but yes is has a "wipe everything" option [20:56] It is probably best to follow a video of a install or written instruction if you have never done it before, just so you know what to expect. [20:58] Make sure it is the same version as you are installing. 24.04 has a new installer so it is a bit different from earlier versions.
