pickanick | 22.04.4 today has a popup: "Plasma Workspace \ Upgrade available \ Ubuntu on 24.04.1 LTS. This version will stop receiving updates and security fixes in 230 days. Is LTS only good for three years? | 03:36 |
---|---|---|
pickanick | How long do updates and security fixes last on a LTS Kubuntu spin? Is there documentation on this? | 05:28 |
valorie | pickanick: 3 years | 05:55 |
filex | Hey, upgraded Kubuntu 24.10 yesterday and came back to a desktop not working and showing, some widget is not compatible with plasma 6. So, I guess Plasma 6 messed up some things with my desktop and is currently even crashing my whole system. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? | 06:14 |
IrcsomeBot | <CatchMe007> I've been facing this screen issue for the past two months. It persists as long as the mouse is not moved; moving the mouse stops it. I've been encountering this problem since Kubuntu 22.04.4, and I thought upgrading to 24.04.1 would resolve it, but the issue persists even after the upgrade. I am not using NVIDIA DRIVER, I have Intel HD graphics with AMD Graphics : https://irc-attachments.kde.org/210ad2be/file_78216.mp4 | 06:14 |
filex | My problem is some different to that: If starting up, it needs a bit longer. When in desktop view, it can normally load files and sometimes tries to load the taskbar(s) but then crashes into a black screen. After a few seconds it restores again. If this happens (I think) 3 times, the system will crash and unproperly shut itself down. If going to tty before that and wait a bit then switching back to desktop view, you will see the login screen and not | 06:22 |
filex | be able to do anything anymore. If trying to logout while the black screen thing is happening, the system will instead shut itself properly down. | 06:22 |
filex | Also, starting with Ubuntu as desktop session works and there is no difference between X11 and Wayland in the Kubuntu case | 06:23 |
filex | Sorry, went afk for a moment. If anyone wrote something since my last message, please write it once more | 07:25 |
=== shane is now known as jubeispace | ||
filex | Update: Fixed it. Seems to be once again caused by some widgets which were crashing plasmashell. To be honest, plasma desktop has a bit too much problems | 11:38 |
amichair | did anyone figure out how to upgrade to 24.04 when it fails with errors about conflicts? | 12:17 |
BluesKaj | Hi all | 12:32 |
VeTun | Greetings, is this the right place to get help with cifs related stuff? | 15:06 |
IrcsomeBot | <HuuNaa43> hey im going to install kde desktop and now im on gnome desktop anyone can tell is it good to switch to kde ? | 15:12 |
IrcsomeBot | <TimoSalola> KDE is really nice, I daily drive both, gnome and kde and I prefer KDE myself, but it's a matter of taste (re @HuuNaa43: hey im going to install kde desktop and now im on gnome desktop anyone can tell is it good to switch to kde ?) | 16:10 |
oerheks | Install a fresh Kubuntu, without the gnome cruft. | 16:16 |
IrcsomeBot | <TimoSalola> ^this | 16:18 |
user|72 | I trried toupgrade to 24.04 LTS from 22.04.04 LTS. Fails to boot - getting a blck screen that does not respond. Is there a fix for this? | 16:47 |
AC6B | How to install kubuntu? | 16:59 |
IrcsomeBot | <TimoSalola> user 72 could be graphics drivers related issue. I would boot into a live media, take backups and then either ssh into the system or use the iGPU if you have one (re @IrcsomeBot: <user|72> I trried toupgrade to 24.04 LTS from 22.04.04 LTS. Fails to boot - getting a blck screen that does not respond. Is there a fix for this?) | 17:03 |
IrcsomeBot | <TimoSalola> AC6B you would typically create a bootable installer with a 8gb or larger usb drive. Which tools you'd use for this would depend on your OS | 17:05 |
bertro | I recomment Ventoy to create your bootable USB drive. It makes it very easy to add other iso images to it later if needed, like clonezilla, etc. | 17:09 |

user|77 | How to install kubuntu? | 18:51 |
user|77 | Hello? | 18:52 |
user|77 | guys? | 18:52 |
IrcsomeBot | <TimoSalola> Download iso from kubuntu website, create an installer USB drive and boot into it. Go through the steps in the installer and you've got kubuntu on your machine | 18:53 |
user|77 | Wait how do you make an installer usb on mac? | 18:56 |
user|77 | And how do you boot the usb drive? | 18:57 |
user|77 | On mac | 18:58 |
IrcsomeBot | <TimoSalola> ah hmm this might complicate things, especially if you are on a mac with one of those newer arm cpu's | 18:58 |
user|77 | Yeah. | 18:58 |
bertro | You can use BalenaEtcher to create a bootable USB stick from the Kubuntu iso file. | 19:00 |
user|77 | Yeah i have done that | 19:00 |
bertro | Balena Etcher works on Mac. | 19:00 |
user|77 | I know | 19:00 |
user|77 | Should i try to boot it on a chromebook? | 19:00 |
user|77 | On BalenaEtcher i used a 2TB drive | 19:01 |
user|77 | Seagate | 19:01 |
bertro | I don't believe there's a Kubuntu build for ARM64 (Mac M) chips. But you could always install the ARM version of Ubuntu server and then run sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop to convert it into a Kubuntu | 19:01 |
user|77 | Thank you | 19:03 |
user|77 | I will try that | 19:04 |
bertro | Good luck. I found this that might help too: https://ubuntuasahi.org/ | 19:05 |
bertro | looks like you could install if from a command line in Mac OS Terminal itself. Instructions here: https://github.com/UbuntuAsahi/ubuntu-asahi#readme | 19:06 |
bertro | It sets up dual boot by default. Once it's installed, you can apt install kubuntu-desktop to convert it to KDE | 19:07 |
user|77 | Im on intel based mac | 19:09 |
bertro | ah, then it's much easier! | 19:09 |
user|77 | Oh? | 19:09 |
user|77 | Really? | 19:09 |
bertro | sorry, I totally misunderstood. In that case you should be able to just use the Kubuntu bootable USB stick you made. Boot from it and install Kubuntu | 19:10 |
bertro | Not sure if all the video, sound, wifi drivers work properly though | 19:10 |
user|77 | Oh ok its okay | 19:10 |
user|77 | But i cant get java to work.. | 19:11 |
IrcsomeBot | <TimoSalola> Yep much easier. The arm processors that new macs have require completely different builds for each software package which means that support sucks | 19:11 |
IrcsomeBot | <TimoSalola> I haven't had issues getting java to work on my kubuntu system. Open jdk and jre worked well the last time I tried them | 19:12 |
bertro | here, I found a quick YT video on how to install. it talks about regular Ubuntu, but it should be the same for Kubuntu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIgxEEzT9ek | 19:12 |
user|77 | Cool | 19:13 |
bertro | once you have the OS up and running, java should install just like on any regular ubuntu system | 19:13 |
user|77 | I will watch it | 19:13 |
user|77 | Okay | 19:14 |
bertro | good luck! Last time I installed Ubuntu on a Macbook was back in 2015, and it worked well, except bluetooth. I bet things have improved even more in the newest releases | 19:14 |
user|77 | Ubuntu? | 19:15 |
user|77 | Does Kubuntu work for mac mini (2018) §intel based§? | 19:16 |
bertro | it should | 19:16 |
user|77 | okay | 19:16 |
bertro | if it worked on my old 2015 Mac, it should def work well on a 2018 | 19:17 |
user|77 | Okay.. | 19:18 |
user|77 | Thats good to hear | 19:18 |
user|77 | thanks | 19:18 |
bertro | NP. Good luck! | 19:18 |
user|77 | Where is the option key? | 19:19 |
user|77 | i use an windows keyboard | 19:20 |
user|77 | from norway | 19:20 |
user|77 | And is kununtu permantley? | 19:21 |
user|77 | *Kubuntu* | 19:21 |
bertro | if your KB layout is US-English, then the Alt key should work as the Mac Option key | 19:21 |
bertro | if you install the Kubuntu ISO, you'll have the KDE flavor of ubuntu. | 19:21 |
bertro | but you can always install other desktop environments | 19:21 |
user|77 | My KB layout is norwigen | 19:22 |
user|77 | what do i press then? | 19:22 |
bertro | like if you run sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop it will install the regular Ubuntu desktop experience alongside KDE and you can choose which one to use when you log in | 19:22 |
bertro | does your KB have an Alt key? If so, it's probably that | 19:22 |
user|77 | Yeah my KB has a alt key | 19:23 |
bertro | try that then | 19:24 |
user|77 | Okay i will resart now | 19:24 |
user|77 | if i dont talk here since 24hr it worked ok? | 19:24 |
bertro | alright, good luck! | 19:25 |
bertro | if you have another computer or a smartphone use it to google any errors if you get any | 19:26 |
bertro | many people have installed this, so you can find solutions for any problem in the install | 19:26 |
user|77 | It didnt work | 19:33 |
user|77 | i tried restarting 5 times | 19:34 |
user|77 | but i dont have java tho | 19:34 |
IrcsomeBot | <TimoSalola> You keep mentioning java, what's with that | 19:35 |
user|77 | When i try doing the sudo apt install | 19:36 |
bertro | wait, so you did install Kubuntu already? | 19:36 |
user|77 | it does not work cuz of java is not installed | 19:36 |
user|77 | no | 19:36 |
user|77 | it dosent work | 19:36 |
bertro | then where are you trying to run apt? | 19:36 |
user|77 | terminal | 19:37 |
bertro | the Mac OS term? | 19:37 |
user|77 | yes | 19:37 |
bertro | oh, that won't work | 19:37 |
user|77 | O | 19:37 |
user|77 | h | 19:37 |
bertro | you need to reboot your Mac, boot from the USB and install Kubuntu | 19:37 |
bertro | then you can run apt in kubuntu. | 19:37 |
bertro | follow the steps in the YouTube video I shared earlier. it tells you how to create the bootable USB with Balena, then make your Mac start from the USB and then install Ubuntu/Kubuntu | 19:38 |
user|77 | ok | 19:38 |
user|77 | I dont have a power cable.. | 19:45 |
user|77 | And if your wondering my flash drive is 2TB | 19:46 |
bertro | lol, the power cable is something we can't help with :) | 19:47 |
user|77 | I am on Desktop so do i acually need a power cable? | 19:48 |
user|77 | okay i am restarting my pc | 19:49 |
user|77 | It didnt work | 19:51 |
user|77 | What am i doing wrong?? | 19:51 |
user|77 | Everytime i restart i press and hold alt | 19:52 |
bertro | did you follow the instructions in the video on how to boot from the USB drive when you restart? | 19:52 |
user|77 | Yes | 19:52 |
user|77 | Hold Alt/option key | 19:52 |
bertro | that 2TB is it a USB stick or a full disk? | 19:53 |
user|77 | Full disk | 19:53 |
user|77 | Flat | 19:53 |
user|77 | its from seagate | 19:53 |
bertro | yeah, I imagined, since I only heard of 1TB sticks. | 19:53 |
user|77 | okay i got a 32gb stick | 19:53 |
bertro | do you have any USB stick? like a 8GB or 16GB? | 19:53 |
user|77 | now | 19:53 |
user|77 | 32 | 19:54 |
user|77 | gb | 19:54 |
user|77 | From.. | 19:54 |
bertro | ok, that might work better. use Etcher to create a bootable stick from your kubuntu iso | 19:54 |
user|77 | Sandisk | 19:54 |
user|77 | Okay! | 19:54 |
user|77 | :) | 19:54 |
user|77 | sorry its 30gb | 19:55 |
user|77 | will that work? | 19:55 |
bertro | yeah, should work | 19:55 |
user|77 | Okay i am flashing now | 19:55 |
bertro | good luck! | 19:55 |
user|77 | Thanks | 19:56 |
user|77 | I got a weird question here.. | 19:56 |
user|77 | Who made kubuntu? | 19:57 |
user|77 | And is it permantley on your pc? | 19:57 |
bertro | might want to read here about the history: https://kubuntu.org/about-us/ | 19:58 |
bertro | it's a community project to create a flavor of Ubuntu using the KDE desktop environment that some people (like me) prefer | 19:58 |
user|77 | Cool | 19:59 |
bertro | you're installing an operating system, so yes it will be permanently on your computer, just like windows or Mac os are. untill you intentionally remove it | 19:59 |
user|77 | Oh | 19:59 |
user|77 | But can i like.. | 19:59 |
user|77 | uh | 19:59 |
user|77 | Switch to mac? | 19:59 |
user|77 | Like boot camp? | 19:59 |
bertro | if you're not ready to commit to that level, then maybe you should first download a virtual machine app like VirtualBox (free) and isntall kubuntu in there | 19:59 |
bertro | taht way you can test it inside of Mac Os while continuing to use your Mac as usual. | 20:00 |
user|77 | Okay | 20:00 |
user|77 | Thnak you so much | 20:00 |
bertro | and yes, you can also do "dual boot" where you install Kubuntu alongside Mac OS without deleting Mac OS. that way you can restart your computer into Mac OS or into Kubuntu | 20:01 |
user|77 | How do you dual boot then? | 20:01 |
bertro | that's what that YT video is showing | 20:01 |
bertro | a dual-boot install | 20:01 |
user|77 | I am dumb k | 20:01 |
bertro | but honestly, if you're only looking to play with / try kubuntu, I don't recommend dual-booting. it's annoying to keep having to restart your Mac and I bet you'll end up not using Kubuntu much | 20:02 |
bertro | maybe for your use case it's better to just download VirtualBox app in Mac OS, create a virtual machine there (it takes 5 min) and install Kubuntu inside that virtual machine instead | 20:02 |
user|77 | Yea | 20:03 |
bertro | try that first for a while and if you really like it, then you can go to the next step of installing Kubuntu directly on the hardware | 20:03 |
user|77 | Yeah its smaerter | 20:04 |
user|77 | *Smarter* | 20:04 |
bertro | you ca also use Parallels on your Mac instead of VirtualBox, if you already have it. | 20:04 |
user|77 | Yeah i know | 20:05 |
user|77 | but i dont really fell safe with parallels | 20:05 |
user|77 | *feel* | 20:05 |
bertro | then go with VirtualBox. People love it | 20:05 |
bertro | and it's free | 20:05 |
bertro | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1anpiE9ZWXg | 20:06 |
user|77 | +Yeah but how much memory does kubuntu need? | 20:06 |
genii | It will chug away on 2G but 4+ is better | 20:07 |
user|77 | i am using 8 gigs lol | 20:07 |
user|77 | i hope it wont crash | 20:07 |
bertro | then reserve 4 for the virtual machine and the other 4 for Mac OS | 20:07 |
user|77 | Okay | 20:08 |
user|77 | i love this menu on the instalation | 20:08 |
user|77 | should i try it or install it? | 20:08 |
bertro | select try | 20:08 |
user|77 | Okay and then Norwigen as language? | 20:09 |
bertro | it will boot into the deskop and you'll have an icon to install from there | 20:09 |
bertro | your choice :) | 20:09 |
user|77 | Okay | 20:09 |
user|77 | What if i click install then? | 20:09 |
bertro | you can do that too. it will take you straight throug the installer | 20:09 |
user|77 | Okay try | 20:09 |
user|77 | its right that roblox is on linux? | 20:10 |
bertro | nope, it's not | 20:10 |
user|77 | what?? | 20:10 |
bertro | people have been asking for it for years, but they refuse to build a linux version | 20:10 |
bertro | not enough users | 20:10 |
user|77 | Someone was just playing the linux version like 50 min ago | 20:10 |
user|77 | he played on kubuntu | 20:11 |
user|77 | and thats when i got my eye on kubuntu | 20:11 |
bertro | oh, really? maybe my knowledge is out of date, lol | 20:11 |
user|77 | oKAY | 20:11 |
bertro | or they were running the Windows version in Kubuntu via WINE | 20:11 |
user|77 | *okay* | 20:11 |
user|77 | oh | 20:12 |
user|77 | why does linux look old? | 20:12 |
bertro | haha. depends what you mean by "old" | 20:12 |
bertro | I've been using Linux since 1999 and let me tell you, it looks great now compared to 25 years ago :D | 20:13 |
user|77 | Oh | 20:13 |
user|77 | Cool | 20:13 |
bertro | Kubuntu does look a bit more "classic" | 20:13 |
user|77 | Whats the newest linux thing? | 20:13 |
bertro | if you want more eye candy like Mac Os, then you could look at Pop!OS | 20:13 |
bertro | or regular Ubuntu | 20:13 |
bertro | the latest ubuntu / kubuntu is version 24.04.1 just came out a couple days ago | 20:14 |
bertro | BTW, here's a tutorial on Roblox on Linux. it's a hack, since there's no official support, but looks like it works: https://devforum.roblox.com/t/vinegar-the-better-way-to-run-roblox-on-linux/2224394/4 | 20:14 |
user|77 | Hack??? | 20:14 |
bertro | by "hack" I mean workaround, not something bad | 20:17 |
bertro | totally legit, but not officially supported by the developer. so people figured out a way | 20:17 |
user|77 | ok | 20:18 |
user|77 | i will try popos | 20:19 |
user|77 | *Pop! OS | 20:19 |
user|77 | Wait | 20:19 |
user|77 | nobara | 20:19 |
bertro | I used Pop OS a while ago and loved it. It's speciflcally built for gaming | 20:19 |
user|77 | isnt that a good one? | 20:19 |
user|77 | nice | 20:19 |
user|77 | nobara then? | 20:19 |
bertro | nobara is OK, but pretty crashy to be honest | 20:19 |
bertro | it's still very much "beta" | 20:20 |
user|77 | ohh | 20:20 |
user|77 | beta? | 20:20 |
bertro | unfinished | 20:20 |
bertro | "beta version" means pre-release | 20:20 |
user|77 | Can you name every gaming based linux? | 20:21 |
bertro | technically, you can game in most of them. but Pop! OS and Nobara come with some tweaks that help with graphics drivers, libraries needed for gaming, etc. It makes it easier, since you don't need to install them manually | 20:22 |
user|77 | ok | 20:22 |
user|77 | Does nobara use Flatpak? | 20:24 |
user|77 | Or flathub | 20:24 |
user|77 | and pop! os | 20:25 |
user|77 | nvm | 20:29 |
user|77 | it works with pop os | 20:29 |
user|77 | and others | 20:29 |
user|77 | like red hat and fedora | 20:29 |
user|77 | and ubuntu.. | 20:29 |
user|77 | Do you recomend UBUNTU or POP! OS? | 20:30 |
user|77 | i am new to linux btw | 20:30 |
oerheks | dont ask that in the Kubuntu support channel | 20:30 |
oerheks | please, for random talk there is #linux and #ubuntu-offtopic | 20:31 |
user|77 | Sory | 20:32 |
