pickanick22.04.4  today has a popup: "Plasma Workspace \ Upgrade available \ Ubuntu on 24.04.1 LTS. This version will stop receiving updates and security fixes in 230 days.    Is LTS only good for three years?03:36
pickanickHow long do updates and security fixes last on a LTS Kubuntu spin? Is there documentation on this?05:28
valoriepickanick: 3 years05:55
filexHey, upgraded Kubuntu 24.10 yesterday and came back to a desktop not working and showing, some widget is not compatible with plasma 6. So, I guess Plasma 6 messed up some things with my desktop and is currently even crashing my whole system. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?06:14
IrcsomeBot<CatchMe007> I've been facing this screen issue for the past two months. It persists as long as the mouse is not moved; moving the mouse stops it. I've been encountering this problem since Kubuntu 22.04.4, and I thought upgrading to 24.04.1 would resolve it, but the issue persists even after the upgrade. I am not using NVIDIA DRIVER, I have Intel HD graphics with AMD Graphics : https://irc-attachments.kde.org/210ad2be/file_78216.mp406:14
filexMy problem is some different to that: If starting up, it needs a bit longer. When in desktop view, it can normally load files and sometimes tries to load the taskbar(s) but then crashes into a black screen. After a few seconds it restores again. If this happens (I think) 3 times, the system will crash and unproperly shut itself down. If going to tty before that and wait a bit then switching back to desktop view, you will see the login screen and not06:22
filexbe able to do anything anymore. If trying to logout while the black screen thing is happening, the system will instead shut itself properly down.06:22
filexAlso, starting with Ubuntu as desktop session works and there is no difference between X11 and Wayland in the Kubuntu case06:23
filexSorry, went afk for a moment. If anyone wrote something since my last message, please write it once more07:25

filexUpdate: Fixed it. Seems to be once again caused by some widgets which were crashing plasmashell. To be honest, plasma desktop has a bit too much problems11:38
amichairdid anyone figure out how to upgrade to 24.04 when it fails with errors about conflicts?12:17
BluesKajHi all12:32
VeTunGreetings, is this the right place to get help with cifs related stuff?15:06
IrcsomeBot<HuuNaa43> hey im going to install kde desktop and now im on gnome desktop anyone can tell is it good to switch to kde ?15:12
IrcsomeBot<TimoSalola> KDE is really nice, I daily drive both, gnome and kde and I prefer KDE myself, but it's a matter of taste (re @HuuNaa43: hey im going to install kde desktop and now im on gnome desktop anyone can tell is it good to switch to kde ?)16:10
oerheksInstall a fresh Kubuntu, without the gnome cruft.16:16
IrcsomeBot<TimoSalola> ^this16:18
user|72I trried toupgrade to 24.04 LTS from 22.04.04 LTS.  Fails to boot - getting a blck screen that does not respond.  Is there a fix for this?16:47
AC6BHow to install kubuntu?16:59
IrcsomeBot<TimoSalola> user 72 could be graphics drivers related issue. I would boot into a live media, take backups and then either ssh into the system or use the iGPU if you have one (re @IrcsomeBot: <user|72> I trried toupgrade to 24.04 LTS from 22.04.04 LTS.  Fails to boot - getting a blck screen that does not respond.  Is there a fix for this?)17:03
IrcsomeBot<TimoSalola> AC6B you would typically create a bootable installer with a 8gb or larger usb drive. Which tools you'd use for this would depend on your OS17:05
bertroI recomment Ventoy to create your bootable USB drive. It makes it very easy to add other iso images to it later if needed, like clonezilla, etc.17:09

user|77How to install kubuntu?18:51
user|77Hello?18:52
user|77guys?18:52
IrcsomeBot<TimoSalola> Download iso from kubuntu website, create an installer USB drive and boot into it. Go through the steps in the installer and you've got kubuntu on your machine18:53
user|77Wait how do you make an installer usb on mac?18:56
user|77And how do you boot the usb drive?18:57
user|77On mac18:58
IrcsomeBot<TimoSalola> ah hmm this might complicate things, especially if you are on a mac with one of those newer arm cpu's18:58
user|77Yeah.18:58
bertroYou can use BalenaEtcher to create a bootable USB stick from the Kubuntu iso file.19:00
user|77Yeah i have done that19:00
bertroBalena Etcher works on Mac.19:00
user|77I know19:00
user|77Should i try to boot it on a chromebook?19:00
user|77On BalenaEtcher i used a 2TB drive19:01
user|77Seagate19:01
bertroI don't believe there's a Kubuntu build for ARM64 (Mac M) chips. But you could always install the ARM version of Ubuntu server and then run sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop to convert it into a Kubuntu19:01
user|77Thank you19:03
user|77I will try that19:04
bertroGood luck. I found this that might help too: https://ubuntuasahi.org/19:05
bertrolooks like you could install if from a command line in Mac OS Terminal itself. Instructions here: https://github.com/UbuntuAsahi/ubuntu-asahi#readme19:06
bertroIt sets up dual boot by default. Once it's installed, you can apt install kubuntu-desktop to convert it to KDE19:07
user|77Im on intel based mac19:09
bertroah, then it's much easier!19:09
user|77Oh?19:09
user|77Really?19:09
bertrosorry, I totally misunderstood. In that case you should be able to just use the Kubuntu bootable USB stick you made. Boot from it and install Kubuntu19:10
bertroNot sure if all the video, sound, wifi drivers work properly though19:10
user|77Oh ok its okay19:10
user|77But i cant get java to work..19:11
IrcsomeBot<TimoSalola> Yep much easier. The arm processors that new macs have require completely different builds for each software package which means that support sucks19:11
IrcsomeBot<TimoSalola> I haven't had issues getting java to work on my kubuntu system. Open jdk and jre worked well the last time I tried them19:12
bertrohere, I found a quick YT video on how to install. it talks about regular Ubuntu, but it should be the same for Kubuntu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIgxEEzT9ek19:12
user|77Cool19:13
bertroonce you have the OS up and running, java should install just like on any regular ubuntu system19:13
user|77I will watch it19:13
user|77Okay19:14
bertrogood luck! Last time I installed Ubuntu on a Macbook was back in 2015, and it worked well, except bluetooth. I bet things have improved even more in the newest releases19:14
user|77Ubuntu?19:15
user|77Does Kubuntu work for mac mini (2018) §intel based§?19:16
bertroit should19:16
user|77okay19:16
bertroif it worked on my old 2015 Mac, it should def work well on a 201819:17
user|77Okay..19:18
user|77Thats good to hear19:18
user|77thanks19:18
bertroNP. Good luck!19:18
user|77Where is the option key?19:19
user|77i use an windows keyboard19:20
user|77from norway19:20
user|77And is kununtu permantley?19:21
user|77*Kubuntu*19:21
bertroif your KB layout is US-English, then the Alt key should work as the Mac Option key19:21
bertroif you install the Kubuntu ISO, you'll have the KDE flavor of ubuntu.19:21
bertrobut you can always install other desktop environments19:21
user|77My KB layout is norwigen19:22
user|77what do i press then?19:22
bertrolike if you run sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop it will install the regular Ubuntu desktop experience alongside KDE and you can choose which one to use when you log in19:22
bertrodoes your KB have an Alt key? If so, it's probably that19:22
user|77Yeah my KB has a alt key19:23
bertrotry that then19:24
user|77Okay i will resart now19:24
user|77if i dont talk here since 24hr it worked ok?19:24
bertroalright, good luck!19:25
bertroif you have another computer or a smartphone use it to google any errors if you get any19:26
bertromany people have installed this, so you can find solutions for any problem in the install19:26
user|77It didnt work19:33
user|77i tried restarting 5 times19:34
user|77but i dont have java tho19:34
IrcsomeBot<TimoSalola> You keep mentioning java, what's with that19:35
user|77When i try doing the sudo apt install19:36
bertrowait, so you did install Kubuntu already?19:36
user|77it does not work cuz of java is not installed19:36
user|77no19:36
user|77it dosent work19:36
bertrothen where are you trying to run apt?19:36
user|77terminal19:37
bertrothe Mac OS term?19:37
user|77yes19:37
bertrooh, that won't work19:37
user|77O19:37
user|77h19:37
bertroyou need to reboot your Mac, boot from the USB and install Kubuntu19:37
bertrothen you can run apt in kubuntu.19:37
bertrofollow the steps in the YouTube video I shared earlier. it tells you how to create the bootable USB with Balena, then make your Mac start from the USB and then install Ubuntu/Kubuntu19:38
user|77ok19:38
user|77I dont have a power cable..19:45
user|77And if your wondering my flash drive is 2TB19:46
bertrolol, the power cable is something we can't help with :)19:47
user|77I am on Desktop so do i acually need a power cable?19:48
user|77okay i am restarting my pc19:49
user|77It didnt work19:51
user|77What am i doing wrong??19:51
user|77Everytime i restart i press and hold alt19:52
bertrodid you follow the instructions in the video on how to boot from the USB drive when you restart?19:52
user|77Yes19:52
user|77Hold Alt/option key19:52
bertrothat 2TB is it a USB stick or a full disk?19:53
user|77Full disk19:53
user|77Flat19:53
user|77its from seagate19:53
bertroyeah, I imagined, since I only heard of 1TB sticks.19:53
user|77okay i got a 32gb stick19:53
bertro do you have any USB stick? like a 8GB or 16GB?19:53
user|77now19:53
user|773219:54
user|77gb19:54
user|77From..19:54
bertrook, that might work better. use Etcher to create a bootable stick from your kubuntu iso19:54
user|77Sandisk19:54
user|77Okay!19:54
user|77:)19:54
user|77sorry its 30gb19:55
user|77will that work?19:55
bertroyeah, should work19:55
user|77Okay i am flashing now19:55
bertrogood luck!19:55
user|77Thanks19:56
user|77I got a weird question here..19:56
user|77Who made kubuntu?19:57
user|77And is it permantley on your pc?19:57
bertromight want to read here about the history: https://kubuntu.org/about-us/19:58
bertroit's a community project to create a flavor of Ubuntu using the KDE desktop environment that some people (like me) prefer19:58
user|77Cool19:59
bertroyou're installing an operating system, so yes it will be permanently on your computer, just like windows or Mac os are. untill you intentionally remove it19:59
user|77Oh19:59
user|77But can i like..19:59
user|77uh19:59
user|77Switch to mac?19:59
user|77Like boot camp?19:59
bertroif you're not ready to commit to that level, then maybe you should first download a virtual machine app like VirtualBox (free) and isntall kubuntu in there19:59
bertrotaht way you can test it inside of Mac Os while continuing to use your Mac as usual.20:00
user|77Okay20:00
user|77Thnak you so much20:00
bertroand yes, you can also do "dual boot" where you install Kubuntu alongside Mac OS without deleting Mac OS. that way you can restart your computer into Mac OS or into Kubuntu20:01
user|77How do you dual boot then?20:01
bertrothat's what that YT video is showing20:01
bertroa dual-boot install20:01
user|77I am dumb k20:01
bertrobut honestly, if you're only looking to play with / try kubuntu, I don't recommend dual-booting. it's annoying to keep having to restart your Mac and I bet you'll end up not using Kubuntu much20:02
bertromaybe for your use case it's better to just download VirtualBox app in Mac OS, create a virtual machine there (it takes 5 min) and install Kubuntu inside that virtual machine instead20:02
user|77Yea20:03
bertrotry that first for a while and if you really like it, then you can go to the next step of installing Kubuntu directly on the hardware20:03
user|77Yeah its smaerter20:04
user|77*Smarter*20:04
bertroyou ca also use Parallels on your Mac instead of VirtualBox, if you already have it.20:04
user|77Yeah i know20:05
user|77but i dont really fell safe with parallels20:05
user|77*feel*20:05
bertrothen go with VirtualBox. People love it20:05
bertroand it's free20:05
bertrohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1anpiE9ZWXg20:06
user|77+Yeah but how much memory does kubuntu need?20:06
geniiIt will chug away on 2G but 4+ is better20:07
user|77i am using 8 gigs lol20:07
user|77i hope it wont crash20:07
bertrothen reserve 4 for the virtual machine and the other 4 for Mac OS20:07
user|77Okay20:08
user|77i love this menu on the instalation20:08
user|77should i try it or install it?20:08
bertroselect try20:08
user|77Okay and then Norwigen as language?20:09
bertroit will boot into the deskop and you'll have an icon to install from there20:09
bertroyour choice :)20:09
user|77Okay20:09
user|77What if i click install then?20:09
bertroyou can do that too. it will take you straight throug the installer20:09
user|77Okay try20:09
user|77its right that roblox is on linux?20:10
bertronope, it's not20:10
user|77what??20:10
bertropeople have been asking for it for years, but they refuse to build a linux version20:10
bertronot enough users20:10
user|77Someone was just playing the linux version like 50 min ago20:10
user|77he played on kubuntu20:11
user|77and thats when i got my eye on kubuntu20:11
bertrooh, really? maybe my knowledge is out of date, lol20:11
user|77oKAY20:11
bertroor they were running the Windows version in Kubuntu via WINE20:11
user|77*okay*20:11
user|77oh20:12
user|77why does linux look old?20:12
bertrohaha. depends what you mean by "old"20:12
bertroI've been using Linux since 1999 and let me tell you, it looks great now compared to 25 years ago :D20:13
user|77Oh20:13
user|77Cool20:13
bertroKubuntu does look a bit more "classic"20:13
user|77Whats the newest linux thing?20:13
bertroif you want more eye candy like Mac Os, then you could look at Pop!OS20:13
bertroor regular Ubuntu20:13
bertrothe latest ubuntu / kubuntu is version 24.04.1 just came out a couple days ago20:14
bertroBTW, here's a tutorial on Roblox on Linux. it's a hack, since there's no official support, but looks like it works: https://devforum.roblox.com/t/vinegar-the-better-way-to-run-roblox-on-linux/2224394/420:14
user|77Hack???20:14
bertroby "hack" I mean workaround, not something bad20:17
bertrototally legit, but not officially supported by the developer. so people figured out a way20:17
user|77ok20:18
user|77i will try popos20:19
user|77*Pop! OS20:19
user|77Wait20:19
user|77nobara20:19
bertroI used Pop OS a while ago and loved it. It's speciflcally built for gaming20:19
user|77isnt that a good one?20:19
user|77nice20:19
user|77nobara then?20:19
bertronobara is OK, but pretty crashy to be honest20:19
bertroit's still very much "beta"20:20
user|77ohh20:20
user|77beta?20:20
bertrounfinished20:20
bertro"beta version" means pre-release20:20
user|77Can you name every gaming based linux?20:21
bertrotechnically, you can game in most of them. but Pop! OS and Nobara come with some tweaks that help with graphics drivers, libraries needed for gaming, etc. It makes it easier, since you don't need to install them manually20:22
user|77ok20:22
user|77Does nobara use Flatpak?20:24
user|77Or flathub20:24
user|77and pop! os20:25
user|77nvm20:29
user|77it works with pop os20:29
user|77and others20:29
user|77like red hat and fedora20:29
user|77and ubuntu..20:29
user|77Do you recomend UBUNTU or POP! OS?20:30
user|77i am new to linux btw20:30
oerheksdont ask that in the Kubuntu support channel20:30
oerheksplease, for random talk there is #linux and #ubuntu-offtopic20:31
