[18:43] <tomreyn> you could boot from a usb live system, mount file systems (incl. bind-mounting relevant special file systems already mounted on the main system) and chroot into the installed system and try running grub-install from there.
[18:44] <tomreyn> maybe it would work then, or at least give you a better error message
[18:44] <tomreyn> there are also bioses which have a setting for boot sector protection. make sure you don't have such enabled.
