JustDoomMy Dolphin file manager keeps freezing when I go into specific directories for some reason. It has been happening for a while and I think it sometimes switches which ones freeze it. I am running version 4:23.08.5 but I noticed that the Dolphin page says there have been many more updates and yet I can not seem to update to them. I am running Kubuntu00:44
JustDoom24.04.1 LTS00:44
JustDoomI have tried sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade, but it says I am up to date00:45
JustDoomThe Discover software has an Ubuntu and Snap install option but they both show the latest being 23.08.400:45
JustDoomrunning sudo apt install dolphin responds with dolphin is already the newest version (4:23.08.5-0ubuntu4).00:52
JustDoomIt is looking like each version is tied to an OS version? But is there a more modern KDE version?01:05

ubottuJustDoom: Packages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. Post-release updates are only considered if they are fixes for security vulnerabilities, high impact bug fixes, or unintrusive bug fixes with substantial benefit. See also !backports, !sru, and !ppa.01:51

tomreynyes, each version is tied to a Kubuntu release (when it comes to apt / .deb packages), not so for snaps01:52
JustDoomThe snap was telling me 23.08.4 was also the latest though01:52
tomreynsnaps need to be packaged, too. if no one packages them then there won't be a newer version, there can be different release channels for snaps, as listed on snapcraft.io and in your software "store" application01:53

JustDoomAh yeah, Candidate has one that is slightly newer. But still very outdated compared to the latest01:55
JustDoomAlso why is it that 23.08.4 is tied to Kubuntu 24.04 then and not one that was released later? Because I keep having it freeze on me01:56
JustDoomHappens on multiple devices too02:02
tomreynsee what ubottu said about !latest02:19
tomreynversions for a Kubuntu release are frozen by the time a release is being prepared, some weeks before release02:19
tomreynthen bug and security fixes are backported to this version for the lifetime of the release02:20
tomreynthis means things don't break druing the release, which provides a stable experience. this can be great to have.02:20
tomreynthere are somewhat rare exceptions to this approach, see !sru - and 'workarounds' such as !backports (which is a different thing than backported bugfixes) and !ppa 's (and sometimes third party apt repositories), and snaps.02:23

JustDoom!backports02:27
ubottuIf new updated packages are built for an application, they may go into Kubuntu Backports, which is one of the official Kubuntu PPAs. See https://community.kde.org/Kubuntu/PPAs for more information.02:27
JustDoomI guess that makes sense now02:28

user|5I was running 22.xx LTS (I forget the exact number. I saw the notice for 24.xx and accepted the upgrade. All my assembly language stopped working. I was assembling with NASM, and linking with gcc. The programs now get Segmentation fault. Any suggestions?09:28

keithzgHmmmm at one point I knew how to get the Debian packaging provided stuff to know what the mysql/mariadb root password was, but I seem to have entirely forgotten, and googling just gives me variations on people trying to change their mariadb root password (which isn't at all my issue, *I* know what it is lol)20:03
keithzgAh d'oh of course, /etc/mysql/debian.cnf20:55
